Wings Acquire Erik Cole

Recommended Posts

TO Detroit:

Erik Cole - 6'2, 205lbs, 36 years old, Left Winger

- 57 GP, 18G 15A 33PTS

- Cap hit $4.5mm

- Status: UFA end of this season

Conditional 3rd Round Pick

TO Dallas:

2nd Round Pick

D Mattias Backman

C Mattas Janmark

My take, before reading anyone else's comments: Ok deal. Comparable to the Legwand deal in importance - as in, about a 4 or 5 on a scale of 1 to 10. Didn't give up much.

Erik Cole has no playoff goals since May 13th, 2002. Since then in 34 playoff games he has 5 assists and has a -14 rating. I don't care if Cole is quick on his skates or gritty or whatever, as a 36 year old rental player, he is not worth 2 mid-range prospects and a 2nd. I am disappointed to see Mattias Janmark-Nylen go as he was having a good season in the SHL this year and factored into future plans for the organization.

Is Cole any good anymore?

Not the player he was a decade ago of course, when he was a playoff warrior. But a bit of a rebirth this season, with 18 goals already. Good size, decent speed, playoff experience and can score more than your typical 3rd liner. I don't think we make this trade if Franzen wasn't likely done for the year, but I'm fine with it. A B minus/C plus deal.

I don' think he did, nor did Backman. Neither were going to play in a Wings uniform. The only question is whether they could have been used as trading chips in a better deal. I don't think so. This comes down to losing 1/2 a round in the draft and a couple of throw ins. If Cole contributes in these playoffs and the Wings make the conference finals we'd lose the 3rd rounder, but who would complain if that happens.

I won't argue the Backman point, as there were too many better plaayers ahead of him. I don however think that Janmark-Nylen had a future here.

I think also that people tend to overrate the value of mid 2nd round picks. Look at the players drafted 41-50 in 2008, 2009, and 2010:

Yann Sauve

Patrick Wiercioch

Justin Schultz

Luke Adam

Zac Dalpe

Colby Robak

Maxime Sauve

Mitch Wahl

Jared Staal

Cameron Gaunce

Zach Budish

Charles Olivier-Roussel

William Wrenn

Drew Shore

Jeremy Morin

Robin Lehner

Ehten Werek

Brett Ponich

Stefan Elliot

Kenny Ryan

Patrick Nemeth

Devante Smith-Pelly

Bradley Ross

Sebastian Wannstrom

Ryan Spooner

Martin Marincin

Tyler Toffoli

Curtis Hamilton

Calvin Pickard

Conner Brickley

How many of those even made the NHL, or do I even recognize - a dozen? Made an impact or are still likely too - could probably count on fingers of one hand?

Great point. Cole should help the 3rd or 4th line and will add some much needed size w/out Franzen.

Give me Tyler Toffoli any day of the week! But really, point taken on the value of a mid-2nd. I still like Janmark-Nylen though and am still skeptical of Cole's declining post-season stat sheet.

Cole is a bit underwhelming, but with Helm hurt now this makes sure Cleary won't be forced into any action.

Backman was complaining about his minutes in the AHL so he fled back to Sweden instead of earning more minutes. I doubt he was ever going to play in Detroit after that. Janmark was interesting to me after he was drafted, I liked his game but he is very far off from NHL contributions. He seems to be having a decent year in Sweden but apparently he had fallen off of Sweden's radar during the Euro Hockey Tour (according to George Malik) so that is concerning. George also makes a relevant point:

George Malik @georgemalik · 2h 2 hours ago

My guess about moving Janmark is that Hakan knew something we didn't. Andersson is a member of the Frolunda Indians' board of directors.

In Hakan I trust so I hope that's the case.

Cole seems like he can still score so that will be nice even if he isn't the greatest possession player. The Wings have decent center depth after the last draft so losing Janmark isn't the end of the world especially when he isn't in their top ten prospects. Stars' third round pick should be early and Detroit's second round will be later, shouldn't be too much of a drop. Not an elite move but I don't really have a problem with it.

Now bring me a defenseman!

They needed a Tomas Holmstrom-like irritant for a long time now. Certainly looks like Franzen's career is over, and he hasn't played that way in years now. Plus I just don't know how much longer they should stick with Helm.

I would not be surprised if they picked up Marek Zidlicky for something like a fourth rounder (at his age)...........so they can have that right handed shot they covet. I don't understand that since they have the best power play in the game now.

My problem is even with Cole having a resurgent year, his playoff stats have been garbage for a while now.

???

41 of his 46 playoff games were in 2 seasons: his rookie year, and 2008-2009, where he only played 20 regular season games (injury?).

That's not a fair sample size at all.

1. I want Phaneuf. And am willing to pay a heavy price for it. We'd wake up on Tuesday morning fans of a bona fide Cup contender

2. I'm afraid you're right about Franzen, but Helm is playing the best hockey of his career recently. He might be a good "sell high" candidate in the summer, depending on the injury tests, but until this weekend he had done a good job of staying healthy.

Right, he has only played 3 playoff games since 2009 so I'm not too concerned about the no goals stat. Although for the record, he did play in 80 game sin 2008-09. 63 were with Edmonton, 17 with Carolina, that's why it is easy to make that mistake. I prefer to look at the fact that he scored 35 goals just 3 seasons ago with Montreal and is on pace for 25 this year.

I know he's not the player he was and this is a modest addition, but I have a fairly long personal history with Cole, and I'm happy to see him a member of the team I root for.

Nice replacement for what Franzen is supposed to be. He scores even strength goals and we need that. No major prospects or 1st round picks given up. Couldn't have asked much more. Wish they got Petry though

I don't think we need Petry unless we trade Brendan Smith.

It's ok he ended up in Montreal, because the Habs don't always sign their rentals so if we have a need for Petry this summer I think we could get him.
