The salary cap situation

Recommended Posts

We Need to Talk About Kevin: On Life Without Durant for the Oklahoma City Thunder «

Using those numbers, here is the percentage of cap space a max deal that is signed this summer will take up the next 4 years. They don't make a prediction for year 4 so I left the cap at $105,000,000.

Basically, if there was ever a summer to take a gamble on a player, this is it. A mistake will still cost you a lot of cash. But in terms of how much cap space it takes up, you are getting a decent discount the next 3 years.

Taking a flyer on someone like Middleton might not be the worst idea.

QUOTE]

I would love Middleton, but we need to add a value 4 if we do IMO. I like Terrence Jones, just wonder if he will stay healthy.

Wouldn't the obvious first order of business this offseason be offering Draymond Green a max contract?

Considering he fills a huge need for the Pistons and is the one guy who actually might WANT to come to Michigan, I'm surprised he isn't mentioned more in these threads. Plus, as mentioned above, this would be the offseason to give a max contract to someone...

After Green, you find a replacement for Monroe, lock up Jackson, and get a nice lottery pick. Boom, nice young team amirite?

He's mentioned a ton around here actually. Del did a pretty good job convincing us all that there's no way GS doesn't match though I must say. Especially if they win the title

Langlois was tweeting yesterday that depending on how much Smith signs for this summer, the Pistons could have 2-3 million chopped off the 5.5 million.

So the dead money could be somewhere between 2.9 and 3.9 million instead of 5.9. Few extra million to spend.

As nickel and dime as it may sound in the basketball world, the extra few million could be huge for a team that needs so many pieces.

And with the salary cap going up in the summer of 2016 to as high as 95 million, that 3.9 or even lower will be almost nothing.

Any thought on renouncing Monroe and just letting him walk? That'll free up 10 million right off the bat, correct?

I think it's obvious at this point that he's gone. He spurned us last summer and now with RJ/AD in the pick and roll, Monroe clearly doesn't fit.

This would be a bad idea IMO.

I mean if they have guys lined up to sign and use that cap space, by all means renounce him. But until they do they should just hold onto his Bird rights. That keeps the S&T option open.

I agree with Del, both on GS matching and I'd personally like a better 3pt shooter. I'm not sure how it fits with the great plan or how available he'll be, but a guy like Khris Middleton would be my preference.

I think you almost have to atleast get a S&T for him. He might not be a fit for us and we might not even want him but he is an asset and when your a team and a market like the Pistons you can't just let assets go for only cap space.

If Monroe wants to sign with a team with little to no cap space, there is a small chance of a sign and trade.

If Monroe wants to sign with a team with cap space falling out of their backside, there will be no sign and trade.

I think this is the updated cap situation.

question on Prince. If his salary was ~7.7 million this year, why is his cap hold so much higher? Also, as an UFA they probably aren't looking to resign, can they renounce him and recover his cap? Or is there still value in the expiring/ed contract for the time being?

Cap holds are a percentage of the previous years salary based on years in the league and what type of free agent you are. This shows each tier.

NBA Salary Cap FAQ

If they renounce him they do recover his cap space. Even if you renounce the player, you can still A)Sign him and B)Sign-and-trade him. The one thing that changes is you now can not use his Bird rights to do either. So you must have actual cap space to sign him.

So the tiny bit of value is if you think Prince is an option for a S&T which he probably isn't. Still, no reason to renounce him until you have a free agent in need of that cap space.

Ah - I see, they make some assumption about FAs in general signing for a increase - I guess that makes sense in general -- though of course not in this particular case.

Thanks.

I believe this is correct. I estimated the Baynes deal since I read we won't know the real number until the cap is set. And I have not calculated the cap holds for future years because it means nothing right now.

Still a little room to play with.
