Mayhew says "essential elements" in place for Suh deal.

..This isn't baseball,offers simply won't vary a whole lot

Not sure I follow what makes the range of NFL offers necessarily more compressed.

Well i hope he doesnt leave. He's a great player.

However, i have a feeling he is gone.

I feel like it's 50/50.

But if he goes, that is a big black mark on Mayhew's record.

I have this feeling as well.

I do not recall EVER seeing this much pub over one guy on a 53 man roster before...even for a QB. It is quite crazy IMO, but it is the world we live in now. I have heard this guys name mentioned like 10k times this offseason....maybe more. It is almost at the Brett Farvre level back in 2008 or whenever that was. They could not stop talking about Brett and it is close to that level with Suh.

He is an important piece, but I will not be near devastated if he leaves.

I do not get that feeling at all. It is not on Mayhew if he decides to leave.

Oh. Well I change my mind then.

Seriously, if anybody is managing the payroll, it is Mayhew and Lewand. They put the team in a situation where it was cost prohibitive to franchise the guy, and where it will be incredibly difficult to find the budget flexibility to keep him.

How can you figure that?

Just another shot at Mayhew for no reason.

Mostly the fixed cap. Which is why only in baseball do you see majorly varying offers on the open market. Suh's going to get 15-18 mil per year, with both 15 and 18 being unlikely.

So you're Walter Sobchak! It all makes sense now!

Question for NFL cap folks:

Did the lions have much of a choice back in 2012 and 2013 when they restructured suh's contract?

I found an article from 2012 that said they were almost 11 million over the cap at the time of the 2012 restructuring.

It's hard to give the FO a pass on this if suh walks when you see what his franchise tag would have been but for the previous restructuring.

But then it's also hard to fault them if suh ultimately walks and they are offering a substantial long term deal.

The restructuring effectively took the franchise tag off the table, but that isn't an issue if you get him signed. Hard to fault them for being confident that they can present the best offer to him.

I don't know.

I agree.

I don't doubt that the Lions have offered him the contract that he desires but I believe that he has always wanted to test free agency and see what's out there which is certainly well within his rights. I think he would have signed already if he wanted to stay with the Lions.

Can't really blame Mayhew if he walks. Can't force him to sign if he doesn't want to be here.

We'll find out within a week or so. If this goes to March 10th with him being unsigned, he's a goner.

I hear 6 year offer with an average 17 m per year. 51 m guaranteed is the Lions offer. Expectation that some money can be moved around to help with the cap and the guarantee may have to go up a little like 500k to 1 m.... all for egotistical reasons.

Suh wants to shop the offer.... that's where we are at.

As an aside, I think the Lions get 2 3rds if Suh leaves.... exactly where at the end of the third round I'm not sure.

Just one third, unless I'm missing something. Likely the first pick after the 3rd round ends.

2 interesting Suh notes I saw today.

The first was a Peter King tweet. He noted that Suh was likely the 3rd best player to ever hit free agency, maybe 4th behind Brees depending how you view it. Some thought Brees was damaged goods at the time.

The other was that the Lions had the 4th best run defense by DVOA since 1989.

figures the Lions would have the best run defense in a pass happy era. :dead:

Last night there was an NFL analyst on ESPN(can't remember the name and he is not a regular on ESPN) that predicted that Suh's deal will be around $110-115 million. Last year, JJ Watt's deal was 6 years for ~$100 million.

Off the top of my head, the following have hit free agency in their NFL careers and signed with other teams:

Reggie White

Drew Brees

Peyton Manning

Emmitt Smith

Jerry Rice

Deion Sanders

Kurt Warner

Half to most of those were over the hill when they hit free agency and signed with another team.

IIRC, 5 out of the 7 listed made it to a Super Bowl after signing with their new teams and they were a big reason why they made it to the Super Bowl.

If the Lions are ever going to make a Super Bowl, their best shot will be by signing Suh as a Free Agent.

Smith and Rice were definitely over the hill when they left Dallas and SF, respectively.

There were questions as to the durability / health of Brees and Manning, plus Manning was old when he signed with Denver.

Warner's FA came on the heels of being released by Rams followed by backing up Eli Manning for half of a season in NY. He did lead the Cards to the Super Bowl and played great in the game, but Warner backed-up Matt Leinart and Josh McCown a fair bit in Arizona as well. I don't think he was viewed as a FA of the same caliber as Suh.

Deion Sanders and Reggie White were more attractive FA, though White was 31/32 in his first season with GB, so Suh's age helps him some.

I just remembered, Smith won and Rice made it to the "Dancing with the Stars" championship, which ranks up there with the Super Bowl.
