JANUARY, 2015 SUCCESSES

Recommended Posts

I just got these four items signed by former Tiger pitcher NED GARVER:

1) Cover of July, 1955 SPORT magazine, where he is pictured as a Tiger.

2) Full Magazine Page of Garver inside this publication.

3) 8" x 10" artwork of a portrait of Garver, showing him as a St. Louis Brown.

4) A card of him as a Brown, which he sent me out of his personal inventory.

Garver was pitching for the St. Louis Browns in 1951 when he won 20 games for a team that lost 102 games. He remains the only pitcher since 1905 to win 20 games for a team that lost over 100 games in a season. Garver was also the starting pitcher for the AL All-Star team that year, held at Briggs Stadium in Detroit.

Garver wrote about this season in his 2013 book, "Catch 20...Too!", which he autographed for me earlier. If you are interested in this book, which I highly recommend, just send a $25 check to Don Garver, 113 Avalon Dr., Byran, OH 43506, and he will send you an autographed copy.

In the mail today Dean Palmer TTM success. This one only took a couple weeks. Also, picked up a Cory Knebel certified autograph card from ebay for a couple bucks. This brings my Tiger autographs up to 877 different player signatures.

Made a trade on another site; picked up a Hideo Nomo autograph card. I traded a Tex Schramm autograph index card. Yea, I know Tex is a Football HOFer but I don't collect football related and Nomo is a tough auto.

I have a Nomo index card, the signature looks nothing like the signature on the successes from SCN. Did a little internet search and it looks like mine is authentic, just an old one from his early years. Then he "Americanized" it and added some English letters to it. Does anyone have any other info on the dramatic change in signature?

TigerFest 2015: Well, THIS is Completely Unexpected (A Play-By-Play)

First of all we arrive at 9am and the Early Entry line actually isn't that bad, but by the time the season ticket holder line opened the line was probably back to the scoreboard (which means the Tigers Club to the corner with Cheli's, then all the way across the outfield). Did the earlier arrival pay off? Then keep reading fool!

With B, C/D (run together) as the early lines this year, we stuck to the straight up and in line strategy from 2014 (reminder: only C/D were early lines last year, no B). Once up, I went to the left (D) and Dad went right ©: ironically my ticket number was #666 and wasn't yet aware of the signers so I took this as a bad sign. Upon getting closer I find out C is Joe Nathan and D is Victor Martinez: not too shabby! But wait... my best Nathan item is with me and not Dad: so the hand-off that many people do in the lines was conducted pretty flawlessly.

Victor Martinez 2012 Topps, Joe Nathan ticket stub from 9/9/14 (SV #30/pick off Dyson at second base)

After that we went our separate ways as Nathan signs quicker (duh), I made a quick stop to the Foundation Fire Sale knowing the line to get in is huge after GA get in... and I am in their by myself and 7 workers! Found something I had to pick up.

Triple Crown, regular Miguel Cabrera, Miguel Cabrera back-to-back MVP, mini Justin Verlander bobbleheads/figurines $5ea

By now its 1045, so its time to find a line: so I check out B for the heck of it! Come to find out they had a few early entry signers tickets left as people waited for them to switch to the next one. I didn't know who was up there, but I took it for the gamble. Come to find out the wait may have been worth it, until I figured it could've messed up my timing of all later lines. If I was a season ticket holder and got this I would've been unpleasant about it.

Daniel Fields 2010 BCP FY, Wynton Bernard Whitecaps ice cream helmet

I exit the line and find out that B remains empty of people, so what the heck: let's try it again! Got one the last tickets for session two so the waiters and I got the same guy: HA! Nothing glamorous but I actually needed this one so it's alright (note: I heard session three was Alex Avila, who I have so I'd prefer this over him unless I had brought my 1/1 printing plate for him to sign).

Al Alburquerque 2011 Topps Update RC

Meanwhile my Dad headed to the service level (basement) to get the front of a line before it opened: he went left which I'm not sure if that was E or F as the guy kept the whole ticket there and gave back just the number part. Well in comes the guy that gets the crowd going as he walks up to the right line's table, begins to sit down... and PSYCH he is actually at the left table. Still I think they got a fair constellation prize with Jose Iglesias, but I got Jose last year so this was just fine.

Justin Verlander 2008 Topps Year In Review insert "Verlander Hurls No-Hitter" (the one from 6/12/07)

So two big names, not bad for this early: pretty much matches my 2013 with Cabrera/Fielder. By this time my dad throws in the towel and calls it a day, but we will re-visit him later. Anyways, I found him and handed off the figures I bought to free up my hands. By this time, let's just say the chaotic nature that TigerFest is known for had arrived. I hopped back in C/D which to get up the stairs went down to B's entrance, all the way across to the end of the covering (97.1 booth) and wrapped one last time to about the spot where C/D exits at (If it sounds like hell, you must have been there before). The line actually moves at a good pace, so the wait is what I'd estimate to be 90mins. This time I go right since nobody else was, and I figured the D #666 from earlier is looming over me. The line ends up being halted until 115 or so as they are waiting for players to come for the session. The guys for my line enter first (even though I thought one went to each side until I got closer). While the new starters are over in D, Shane Greene and Alfredo Simon, we get the arguably better pair (plus I have Simon from a mail in last year to Cincy and Greene I didn't have anything for).

Yoenis Cespedes 2012 Topps RC, Bruce Rondon ice cream helmet (sharpie had died and he knew it but didn't have another, I planned on moving it anyways)

Man, this day is just getting better as I keep going. Me and dad meet up and agreed to do one last line and call it a day. We did the same thing as earlier and got in (the much longer than this morning) C/D line. Just to keep the good vibes going, I said we should split the same as this morning so I took D and he took C again. We each the beginning on session six so the guys signing weren't for us (I had VerHagen and Lobstein, he had two guys I couldn't tell who... but matching photos on Twitter to Krol and Farmer). After seeing a few guys coming through the walkways outside and going the other way (and Ausmus coming up the elevator), the first guy enters and gets going at C and would've been happy with that to finish the day. Then our guy for D enters, and people are going crazy like you'd probably expect.

Omar Vizquel 2003 UD MVP, David Price 2009 Topps RC

So that means the big four guys on the day (w/ Anibal, Kinsler, Soria, and Miggy being all absent today) were all acquired just after 300 rolled around. I could tell I would not get through another line before they closed them, so we headed home after what perhaps may be the best TigerFest ever in all my years when it comes to quality.

(Pictures of the stuff will come at some point in the next couple days)

Next year I am going with Zack! If I go at all.

Lines were unbelievable. Often there was only one Tiger at the table. Talked to one guy who waited in the kid's line for one hour and 40 minutes so his son could get Matt Martin!

Here's what I got:

Victor Martinez, Rajai Davis, James McCann, Chad Smith, Andrew Romine, Daniel Fields, Wynton Bernard, and Alfredo Simon, all on cards.

Al Al and Chad Smith in my 2014 Tiger Yearbook.

Wynton Bernard, last year's Midwest League MVP, on a Midwest League game-used baseball. He signed it "Wynton Bernard, MWL MVP 2014."

Dave, did you do early entry? Seems like that is the key. I'm thinking I may go next year just for the experience, but with very low expectations. I can't wait wait to see the comparison between your hall yesterday and your hall from one day of free ST graphing. :)

My Dad's cousins said the same thing as they had with the GA: Daniel Fields, Anthony Gose, Alfredo Simon, Al Alburquerque, Chad Smith, James McCann, Bruce Rondon, Dixon Manchado. I actually had a standing offer on Gose if I could've acquired the card this guy needed and had it signed so I would've been okay with that, and I figured with him doing stage stuff after 4 it was a good possibility, but this is okay too. :P

It only took me a dozen-ish years to finally figure this whole thing out, and I don't even know how I did it! Don't ask me for pointers and all of your hate mail can be sent to Mr. I about how I "beat the system" lol.

I'm willing to move the Nathan ticket, Rondon helmet, a different Fields and Price as I upgraded to these, and a few other current Tigers I've had from before (Rajai, Ausmus, Jeff Jones come to mind). Hey Dave, do you need Tom Gorzelanny still, because I have one from a couple years ago of him but it got smeared when he mailed it back to me.

Yes, I did do early entry, and by10:10AM I already had Martinez. I think I peaked early.

Without taking anything away from Zack, it is largely the luck of the draw; I think next year I will pay his Dad to work for me to double my haul! This is the least I have ever gotten from Tigerfest.

I'm sure I will do better in spring training each day than what I got at Tigerfest. Plus the weather is warmer!

That's been pretty much the consensus from those I've heard that went, just luck of the draw. Doubling your chances with help doesn't hurt either. Getting VMart and Davis isn't too bad though.....Davis was pretty difficult last year during ST. I want to go once for the experience. Enjoy ST, one day down there will brighten your spirits after waiting in those lines. Lol

That means you were in front me by perhaps 20mins or so, next time we will plan to meet before the GA get in and deplore a strategy that will never be as good as this year lol.

Note: my dad quits pretty much when the GA get in and tries to get into the interview room, which was full by the time he tried this year. I learned years ago the divide and conquer strategy is the best way to go (see 2013 w/ Prince and Miggy)

It was a year for just misses for me at Tigerfest. I collect individual balls of the 40 man roster so my list of hopefuls is usually different from everyone else.

I had an early entry pass as well. First decision C or D. Picked C. Joe Nathan. D was Victor. I have both of them so it really did not matter to me.

Went to line B after finishing with Nathan. Daniel Fields and Wynton Bernard. I needed Bernard so that was a score for me.

Went downstairs to wait for the craziness to happen. Had a choice between E/F. I picked F. I was the first person in the line. Waited… Waited… Justin Verlander walks in and walks to the table. As Zack said before… Just kidding. Switches tables and goes to E. I get Iglesias. Not bad as I have both of them as well. But of course a bit disappointed because Verlander is much harder to get.

When I got of the room the line is way longer than I’ve ever seen it in the basement. I get back in line. The next session had Anthony Gose and Alfredo Simon. I missed them by about 10 people. I would have loved to get Gose because I’ve heard he is a hard signer. I ended up getting Steven Moya and Dixon Machado. I needed Machado and had a Futures Game ball for Moya. I asked him to inscribe MVP on it and he did.

Got back in line… Next session was Kyle Ryan (E) and Andrew Romine (F). When I got to the door people would not take tickets so I jumped them and got a ticket for Romine. I may have been the only person there happy to get him!

Session 6 had players that I already had so I skipped that one and waited for session 7. Rajai Davis (E) and Lance Parrish (F). I again have them both so I picked Davis and had him sign a card.

All in all I had a good time talking baseball with a lot of good people.

If you are thinking about moving the Moya, I wouldn't mind having it. I got a handful of signed ROMLBs from the Tigers grab bags if you are looking to finish off old teams...

Knocked off a couple from my All-Time Tiger autograph project. Ian Kroll and Anthony Gose certified autograph cards. I purchased both from ebay for $2 and $3 respectively.

Got there about 8:30 and waited for the doors to open. Once inside we figured everyone would go straight upstairs so we went to B and were 3 & 4th in line. Got Fields and Bernard and then headed over to C/D. Once we got there VMarts was rather long so we picked Nathan so we could make it downstairs on time. Headed downstairs and was outside the door when the players showed up. A buddy of mine was inside and he told us who was on what side. We had Verlander before so we picked Iggy and got him. Got out and the line was way long but made it back to get Simon (other side was Gose and Fields). Back in the line again this time it took forever to get up and missed a whole session in the process. This time it was Ryan and Romine, we had Romine before so we took Ryan. We decided to go upstairs and there was no way to get back thru with the size of the line. We decide to check on B again and it was not bad so we got in line. Moya was signing but swtiched before we got up there, we waited for line 10 mins and in walks Castellanos. By the time we got him it was 20 mins left so we hit the garage sale thing and headed home.

I get pics that I take at the games signed when possible. I ended up with Nathan, Ryan and Castellanos on those. I had a ticket from last year with Iggy on it so I had him sign that. The other 3 I had sign my helmet, I have a full size MLB helmet that I have people sign.

When I tried that exact thing I was accused of "line cutting". As I stood and asked for clarification from the staff about 5 or 6 people did the same thing and they said "we can't catch them all, you were just the unlucky one".

They really need to change things to make it more efficient.
