Porcello traded for Cespedes

Recommended Posts

Don't like Porcello, don't like Cespedes. Would rather have a solid starter than a mediocre outfielder.

.300 OBP guy, one of the most overrated players in MLB. Core Strength. Power. Blugh

Have to hope playing outside of Oakland boosts his batting average, but then why did he suck in Boston?

Why would Cespedes automatically leave? Playing for the Detroit Tigers is no longer a terrible thing.

I suspect I won't want him in Detroit more than 1 season.

but we get nothing when cespedes leaves. If porcello had stayed, you make him a qo and at least get a #1 pick out if it. Its like we traded porcello and a #1 pick for cespedes and minor league fodder.

dont like it.

Well, the pick you get from Porcello walking is in mid 30s, which isn't really all that valuable. The two guys they get from Boston probably equals it value-wise.

It's also easier for them to find a Porcello replacement in trade (see reds rumors) than to find a cespedes replacement.

The team is going to be better after today than it was yesterday.

Possibly because the Tigers won't pay him the major bucks for mega-years and instead choose Moya next year.

I have always liked Porcello as well and he has been underrated. Cespedes is solid too, but the pitcher they get from the Reds needs to be a legitimate starter in order for it not to be a lateral move.

I disagree with this. We needed a deeper lineup. Porcello can be replaced.

If he deserves, we would extend a qo to Cespedes and get that pick if he leaves anyways.

I'm coming around on this trade actually. Porcello is going to be somewhat of a Binary season. Either he will tear it up in 2015 and demand a $20M a year contract right alongside David Price or he will suck and the trade will work in the Tiger's favor anyways.

Cespedes has it written in is deal that he cannot be given a qo at the end of this year.

Is that because he doesn't care, or is that because it is hard to identify quality relievers?

I wouldnt say he doesnt care, i would say he overvalues certain things like left handers who throw hard and "experienced" closers that have not paid off well in detroit.

Apparently Cespedes has a clause in his contact where he can't be extended a qualifying offer.

He is going to be replaced, but it will cost a lot.

I guess I'm a little confused as to why it's so hard to find a Cespedes replacement.

Is there a huge lack of .300 OBP/.750 OPS guys who can play RF?

I mean, let's put this into perspective, offensively he's a worse 2014 Torii Hunter.

So we're trading Rick Porcello for a corner outfield defense upgrade.

Todd Jones and Valverde paid off well. Detroit has been very successful with closers despite the fans outcry. Only Nathan had struggled.

I don't disagree but I was addressing a post that claims he doesn't care and more specifically I am interested what moves DD should make this off-season to address the bullpen.

I'm not sure throwing more money into is the way I would go.

Realistically, I hope the Tigers get Latos. Leake would be OK.

Agreed, but I hope it doesn't cost us as much as I think it might.

I think it is just as easy to find a right fielder with a 750 ops as it is a starting pitcher who throws 200 innings with a mid 3s era.

Both Valverde and Jones struggled at the end.

Because it's a comp pick at the end of the first round.

That's perfect perspective.
