Jim Harbaugh to Michigan rumors gaining steam...

Recommended Posts

My guess is Peter isn't aware of Ross' ties to the university and heard Ross is contacting Harbaugh, so he is drawing the wrong conclusion. I think that is entirely possible -> likely.

Possible but not likely since the donations haven't been exactly low key or secretive.

i think youre giving peter king a little too much credit. I doubt he does much research beyond regurgitating what comes in on his twitter feed.

Why would Peter King be that knowledgeable about UM or Stephen Ross?

I'm not sure Peter can tell you where each of the NFL owners went to school and whether they donate a lot of money there or are otherwise involved with fund raising.

It is obvious to us because we follow UM. Peter isn't a fan of the Wolverines as far as I know.

Off the top of your head, do you know who donates a lot of money to Tennesee? Texas? USC? Florida State? If you know that off the top of your head, I'd suggest you are in the minority.

Well, I don't know who among average sports fans wouldn't know about Nike's Phil Knight's donations to Oregon and Kevin Plank (Under Armor) being the major donors to Maryland. That features heavily in any media discussion about the viability of those athletic departments/relative health.

But be that as it may. If Peter King were a journalist and not a TV-watching opinion machine, he'd be able to do basic research and uncover hidden relationships like The $100m donation for the Uof M Business school that was named after him or his well-documented activity in the Dave Brandon hiring and firing.

How many people do you think know the name of the guy who runs under armor compared to the guy who runs Nike?

I had never heard of Plank before this, and had no idea he donated to Maryland. Oregon/Nike stands out because of football.

UA -> Maryland? Maybe that's why they joined the B1G.

Can't think of another logical reason.

They were on hard times until Plank started plunking down cash. B1B wanted them (ostensibly) because they bring the Balt/Wash DC marketplace with them: not chopped liver to have that.

I disagree. Coaches have huge egos, and a coach that rebuilds this UM team could own the state. It should be fixed easily, but they don't really have many players right now. Which gives plenty of opportunities for a coach to get "their" players.

I don't think owning Michigan is compelling. Owning a place in the national spotlight is though and Michigan offers (facilities, tradition, money, etc.) to promise that. For Harbaugh though there is also an emotional attachment.

I disagree, Michigan has players. If not for the QB spot I'd expect them to be pretty good next season. I don't mean top 10 good but good. Their OL has some experience and talent. They look good at RB and TE, adequate at WR. The defense has talent at LB and CB. The DL developed during the course of the season. The knock on Hoke was that he didn't develop talent. I think that's overstated but there is talent on the roster.

Stephen Ross is no Phil Knight and I had no clue who Kevin Plank was before you just mentioned him.

I know a journalist could spend 5 minutes researching Ross and discover he donates a lot to UM and is quite involved with the program. I am not disputing that.

All I am saying I think it is possible Peter King does not know that about Stephen and did not research him. Nothing in his MMQB articles suggest he researches anything extensively, if at all. It basically is a mish-mash of thoughts, some of which come across as quasi-philosophical and some of which comes across as his gut feel as a fan. I wouldn't take anything he says in those articles as journalism. It is just a rambling opinion pieces a lot of fans like to read. Nothing more, nothing less.

MMBM by @PFTCommenter is a way better read. Just a life tip for you.

I gather Harbaugh might force the hands of his ownership. That's the kind of can-do attitude we need. Get this dance over with and start the recruiting of the OL, that fullback and the TE. Oh, and add a Tom Brady/Brian Griesse/Chad Henne/Drew Henson/Ryan Mallet prototype elite pocket passer while you are at it. Make sure he looks good on TV and can see above the linemen.

Lye Beastin's work should result in a Presidential Medal of Freedom. The citation is meant for "those individuals who have made an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors."

They don't have separators (speed), they don't have much size, and they don't have a QB. I like Jake Butt.

Speed and size everywhere? I'll grant you that they lack elite playmakers...Peppers may be the only one, Butt possibly. Still, that's different than not having payers. In my opinion they have a better than average foundation, much better than what Hoke inherited. They are poised to have a decent year next season (if they get efficient QB play).

Time will tell.

Detroit Sports Rag has a paragraph or two up about Harbaugh texting Moeller that they're going to "get the band back together" soon.

Not sure if it's credible or not.

O-Line is average

They have 0 good WRs

Butt might be a good TE, nothing else at that position

0 proven good RBs

I really don't see the talent outside of 'this guy was a fairly well thought of recruit and might be good with better coaching'
