Jim Harbaugh to Michigan rumors gaining steam...

Recommended Posts

On a related note: I hope (i)AD Hackett has initiated a search firm to replace Jim Brandstatter as the play-by-play voice. He's not suited to that role. Matt Shepherd would be fine. A home run would be someone as good as Dan Dickerson is with the Tigers.

Agreed. Brandstatter is brutal at PBP and I hope Hackett replaces him with someone competent.

Wow, for a guy who was 67-27 (.713) at Nebraska and 4-3 in Bowl Games, falling out of Div I is unexpected.

Maybe Tressel has a master plan to take them to D1.

It's not a pay cut since he collects his Nebraska salary except for the portion that YSU pays him. Gives him a chance to work with Tressel and rebuild his reputation. Perhaps even positions him for tOSU if Urban were to take another powder. I can see some advantages in this job for him.

Cutcliffe is a good coach

I wish Michigan's search was so organized that they'd already hit a home run hire like Mike Riley or Greg Schiano

heh

Where is the upside? Working for free. Working with Tressel (how is that good for his reputation, Tressel wasn't exactly clean himself?). And positioning for OSU to clean up Meyer's inevitable mess? That's a losing proposition all the way around.

49ers officially eliminated from the playoffs with today's loss. Wonder if Jim will get fired tomorrow?

The chances are more than zero

I have a sinking suspicion that harbaugh ends up in miami.

Yeah I don't see it as a done deal with Harbaugh coming to Michigan.

Stephen Ross who wants him for Michigan would deny the place he's been funding up the kazoo in favor of his own NFL team? He's basically highly conflicted. I think the evidence of Harbaugh's wife being ok with the return to Ann Arbor and the appeals from Schembechler's family, Desmond Howard, Anthony Carter, et. al. are all creating a powerful narrative that Harbaugh would have a hard time turning down in favor of some gooftastic Oakland gig.

Peter King is usually pretty wired in on NFL stuff.

Now the drumbeat will grow louder that owner Stephen Ross will go hard after Jim Harbaugh again, and is there any doubt he’ll pay the compensation to San Francisco to get Harbaugh?

FWIW, Peter King is thinking Stephen Ross will do something that would be illogical given his other commitments to Michigan. Ross is as wired in to the situation as anyone. If he's not actively part of the wooing of Harbaugh to Michigan as Schissel I'd be surprised. For him to do that and then turn around and drag saviorharbaugh to Miami would be weird and damaging to his own viability in Ann Arbor.

I don't think the UM coaching job is as attractive to coaches as you seem to think, ROMAD.

I disagree. Coaches have huge egos, and a coach that rebuilds this UM team could own the state. It should be fixed easily, but they don't really have many players right now. Which gives plenty of opportunities for a coach to get "their" players.

I guess I'd have to say I'm cautiously optimistic at this point. The problem with the optimism is that it is built on so-called "insider information" from the likes of mgoblog and gregg henson who are saying that Ross is actively working to woo Harbaugh.

As a regular reader of mgoblog, my opinion of Brian Cook is that he is pretty conservative when it comes to sharing "insider" info so his statements regarding his optimism based on what he hears carries a lot of weight.

I would be surprised if harbaugh doesn't take the job.

My guess is Peter isn't aware of Ross' ties to the university and heard Ross is contacting Harbaugh, so he is drawing the wrong conclusion. I think that is entirely possible -> likely.

That written, I don't think Ross would be that conflicted or necessarily damage his relationship with the university should Harbaugh go to Miami, provided the right set of circumstances existed. For example, if it became clear Jim wasn't interested in returning to the college game, I doubt the university would hold it against Stephen if he pursued Jim for the Dolphins.

Besides, I doubt the university would turn down Stephen's future donations anyway in the hypothetical.

I think that if ross is going after harbaugh to miami its because harbaugh has made it known he is not interested in going back to college.

That could be possible.

Like I say, the buzz --albeit from the Ann Arbor echo chamber -- is that this is happening and there is a lot of noise that just exists because the NFL can't process Coaches returning to College (besides examples like Pete Caroll and Nick Saban)

yeah I wouldn't be upset if Cutcliffe walked through those doors for Michigan, not sure why people are so against it, but it's old news now I guess.
