Jim Harbaugh to Michigan rumors gaining steam...

Recommended Posts

Or the disappearance means he's going to the Rayduhs!!

How?

I don't mean to say it can't happen. I mean to say I don't think that will happen because of the complexities of the NFL trade scenario.

49ers' Harbaugh on the trading block? - San Jose Mercury News

this is also out there

I THINK WE HAVE FORGOTTEN SOMETHING ABOUT THE RAIDERS. Hey, look, Football Scoop is bringing up something a lot of people seem to have forgotten when talk turns to Harbaugh with the Oakland Raiders:

If he were to leave for another NFL job, however, the 49ers would supposedly ask for "a king's ransom" in exchange for releasing him, as the potential for embarrassment is much higher if Harbaugh remains in the NFL, especially if it's with the Oakland Raiders.

Harbaugh is under contract. York and Baalke would be reviled in the Bay Area if Harbaugh went to the disaster zone that is the Raiders and turned them around, especially if the 49ers struggled. (They're already moving towards reviled if the comment sections of 49ers articles are any indication.) It is unlikely they are going to let that happen unless the Raiders pay an exorbitant fee in draft picks, which makes the Raiders job even sketchier.

Congratulations to FS for finally saying something reasonable about this search. It was something I mentioned on December second(!) in the same post bombing their ridiculous "Harbaugh is not a candidate and Michigan is struggling" post, but better three weeks late and after a pile of complete bollocks than never at all.

Just to be safe, I still think it best to cheer for Atlanta over Carolina on Sunday. Otherwise their season would be over and they might fire Mike Smith if they miss the playoffs.

Agreed. The Falcons would be the most talented team with an opening if Smith is gone. The big issue I could see is Harbaugh not getting along with an owner who is notorious for being a micro-manager.

I disagree. The Falcons have no playmakers on defense. All they have is a blocker, a good QB, and a top receiver.

And this is worse than the Raiders? It's not often an NFL job will open with a good team. Atlanta already has a QB which is huge.

Yeah I remember people saying that was the big attraction to the Lions opening last offseason. When you already have a young franchise QB in place it makes it much easier and quicker to rebuild.

The 49er leadership can't wait to trade with Oakland to send Jim Harbaugh to coach their local rivals. And they would LOVE to have Harbaugh around to build up a local team to great success.

Yeah, that seems like something the DeBartolo/York family would like to do.

Barring a last minute change of heart, this one is done. Has been for a while.

Credit to Hackett no matter what happens. He pulled all factions together and kept this one quiet.

What type of agreement could SF and U of M work out if nothing is signed on Harbaugh's end? I'm not familiar with the legality of these types of moves.

Either way, all signs point to it being done. Hopefully there isn't an unforeseen last second change of heart.

It sounds like Hackett may have already worked something out with the 9ers, but if not, I wouldn't be surprised if the shrewd 49er front office already essentially voided his buyout by trashing him in the media all season long. Not a lawyer, but I suspect Michigan or Harbaugh could mount a serious challenge to any sort of buyout if they choose to.

But like I side, I think Hackett already has everything worked out with the 49ers. Probably not giving them the full buyout, but at least throwing them a bone.

I wouldn't think an NFL team can force any kind return at all from a college, they do have leverage against any other NFL team because they league won't let him coach anywhere else in the league unless the contract is settled.. Outside the NFL Harbaugh's contract is pretty unenforcable. The most they can force him to do would be to honor his contract, but that is a pointless exercise - you cannot compel the kind of performance you need to get from a football coach - the 49ers would be consigning their franchise to a lost year.

Tuesday is either going to be Michigan Mardi Gras or an epic meltdown, not much middle ground.

They are doing an admirable job of keeping everyone quiet on the official side.

I watched that last 49ers Harbaugh interview. The hang-dog did not seem authentic, in fact he almost came across like the cat that swallowed the canary with the 'whatever happens, happens' routine.

And how can Raiders officials be there to speak with him when he is still under contract with their NfL rival?

I think if the 49ers were considering a trade of Harbaugh that the Raiders would be allowed to speak with him first to work out his extension and get him signed before the trade is finalized.

I think anxious Michigan fans think Monday or Tuesday there will be a presser with Jim Harbaugh in Ann Arbor. But I think he might wait until a round or two of the NFL playoffs has passed. If the Dallas Cowboys lose their first playoff game and Jim Harbaugh is still available, Jerry Jones would probably fire Jason Garrett and throw something totally ridiculous like 12 - 15 million a year at him.

49ers cannot give permission to speak with Harbaugh until after the season. Rumor has it that Hackett has worked out something with the 49ers to: pay 5m penalty, if, 49ers don't give permission to any other team. Done with Harbaugh's consent.

no idea if true but it is one rumor that is out there.

Most UM sites; rivals, scout, mgb, all are saying this is done and has been for a while. Short of a last minute reversal which doesn't seem likely, this one is done.
