Dave Brandon Resigns

Recommended Posts

I dont care about college sports much but I assume if fans know who the AD is then thats bad news.

Not always true. Mark Hollis is pretty much lauded and revered as a sports and marketing genius.

Valenti and Foster think or were at least selling on Friday afternoon that ONLY Jim Harbaugh and ONLY the AD that can deliver him would be acceptable.

I think the offer was be fired or resign, take your $ 3 million and don't say anything bad about anybody on your way out. I guess he gets kudos for choosing the latter. Either way, he was gone.

He's universally hated by students on campus, though. At some point that has to get old and one probably just wants to get out of that toxic environment and take a long vacation.

I can believe that he offered his resignation unprompted by Schlissel, contingent upon retaining his buyout. The writing was on the wall. He could no longer function as AD with the entire UM fanbase against him.

As was our own example - Don Canham. Euph has it right with 'Wrong reasons'.

As to Jim Harbaugh, his turnaround abilities at every level he has coached speak for themselves, but he's clearly a pretty prickly guy, so it's unclear he can keep from wearing out his welcome long term and I'm sure M would prefer someone who can stick around for a long tenure. JH maybe reminds me of Lloyd Carr some in that respect. OTOH, if he wins, a college coach can create a situation where he will be left alone, and I think autonomy is what Harbaugh always wants and hasn't always gotten - particularly in SF. He's a guy that always trusts his own judgement more than the people telling him what to do (this goes all the way back to his issues with Bo!).

I guess that means if you can trust him not to get himself in trouble with wide autonomy, maybe it can work.

As to Valenti - his schtick is to walk through the world with the gamma on his monitor turned up to max. No choice is ever as stark as Mike would believe it to be.

Not sure what you mean by that...

an attempt to be too brief apparently. Simply agreeing that it's neither intrinsically good or bad if an AD achieves a level of fame in his own right, all depends on whether the fame is for reasons what were good or bad. Canham was as close to a household name as an AD is likely ever to be, but his was certainly not a case of infamy.

Feel good win today. They didn't prove anything but the program at least avoids another L. Hoke is still on the way out.

Hoke could win out and beat the Bucks by 2+TD's and I think he'd still be fired. It would be good for our kids to go to a bowl game this year, so hopefully we start a streak here today. Just beat NW and Maryland and they are in. I'm sure the odds are against that happening though.

Hoke might turn out to be a good coach someday, but he made a couple of strategic errors starting his tenure here than are going to doom him. The 1st was not recruting QB depth, the second was waiting too long to start recruiting the OL. Defense was the glaring need with Hoke started out, but he was too single minded and now the redshirt freshman/soph O-line many be good in another year or two but is still too young to win now and now is when he needed wins to save his job.

Watching Gardner again today, they win by at least another 2 TDs easily with a just a competent div I QB under center. Who knows how many games they could have won with a better QB? They still would not be in a conversation with MSU/OSU, but they still might be in a "this program is reasonably rebuilding" conversation.
