Nebraska football will survive, even if Riley proves to be a downgrade.

Well he's not going to RichRod their football program, so they will survive even if he sucks.

He won at least 8 games 5 times. Rutgers hadn't won 8 games in a season since 1982. Perspective my friend. 5-1 in bowl games too. They also went 9-4 the year after he left.

In the Big (L)east.

Bowl wins over such powerhouse programs as Central Florida, Iowa State, NC State, and Ball State.

Objectively, those teams suck. It was nice that he made a bad program into a decent program with one really good season, but I don't think he's preferable to the other options being mentioned.

Look, if the top ten choices are not available, then maybe consider him. But he doesn't do anything for me.

Objectively.

First, Cowherd has the worst radio program in the history of radio.

I find him to be one of the best things going on the radio. Him and Dan LeBatard.

I have no idea how good Riley is. But I also think it's pretty damn hard to predict how most coaches will do at a new program.

Maybe Pellini shouldn't have been fired. But sometimes it gets stale with a guy constantly going 8-4 or 9-3. He had plenty of time to make that team elite and he never did.

Nebraska football will survive, even if Riley proves to be a downgrade.

Of course. Its just that its probably the strangest hire I've ever seen. Why hire a guy with almost no potential to eclipse what Pelini did, after getting on your high horse and saying Pelini's results weren't good enough for that program? Just bizarre.

See, that wasn't so hard ;)

I think those are pretty good accomplishments for a program like Rutgers and what it was. It doesn't guarantee him to be a success, but I personally believe the guy really understands the game and knows how to develop players. He put the same amount of guys in the NFL as Rutgers did in the previous 40 years.

I don't mean to pile on you. But I don't think Schiano fits the bill. His history would equal Brady Hoke.....but we would have had to grab him in 2007 or so. Since then he led Rutgers to a above average record in a terrible conference.

RichRod came in dominating from the ACC, that was something. Tressel came in from dominating Division II or something like that. The right choice for Head Coach at Michigan is going to be someone who is an unquestioned recruiter, winner, and does it by the right book. A Schiano hire would be as disastrous as hiring Kirk Ferentz. Just not acceptable if UM wants to consider itself still a top-10 program (or rejoin it).

There is only one play here....and it is Harbaugh. Without him....we may end up 11-2 next season.....but we will be in serious danger of repeating the fall-off to a 7-6 record in 2016 and beyond.

RichRod came from the same conference as Schiano.

If you can land a Jim Harbaugh, I'm all about it, but other than that, I'm not sure splashy needs to be the goal. Look for your Dantonio instead

edit - and if we had hired Ferentz 8 years ago I bet we'd all be a lot happier about where the program stands. Winning 8 games a year at Iowa is pretty damn hard. Nobody wants to go to Iowa.

"A crazy statistic found by sportsnation and blackheartgoldpants is that a two star prospect has one in 34 chance of getting drafted. At Iowa, it is one and six. A three star recruit at Iowa is three times more likely of being drafted than an average program. Iowa four star recruits have a one in four chance of being drafted."

Lloyd Carr came out of his shell and mentioned "Jim Harbaugh", giving him a huge push...which means to me that Michigan will only start their search if they won't be able to get Jim Harbaugh. He's such a perfect fit for them, as I think they are a perfect fit for what Jim Harbaugh needs right now.

Michigan's unwarranted arrogance has gotten in their way. A little humility might help and I think Jim Hackett has that humility.

There are NFL names to consider. Sean Payton might be available. Mike Tomlin of Pittsburgh is a name that could draw interest too, but as we know, Pittsburgh tends to stick with good coaches even through bad periods. Michigan won't say that coordinators are out, but I highly doubt they are handing over the reigns to someone who has never been a Head Coach. Teryl Austin is headed for Head Coach status somewhere, and maybe as soon as next year, and even though he does have Michigan connections, it is not his time yet - not here - not in this mess.

Don't sleep on Mark Richt.

Apparently Steve Addazio is 'gaining steam'

Now that would be a hire that says the president's talk about putting academics first is true, and Michigan is content being a Northwestern level football program forever

He's old, hasn't won much, hasn't stayed around long enough to coach his own recruits as upperclassmen, cut his teeth recruting as an assistant in the SEC?

A fit on so many levels....

Who writes this stuff?

Whoever they get had better be able to recruit & coach the QB position. If there's anything that's true about college football right now, it all rises & falls on that position. Period.

Yup. This team wasn't filled with great talent, but IMO with decent QB play they could have been equal to the Minnesotas and Nebraska of the world. The QBs sunk Brady Hoke, period.

Agreed. I understood Gardner's play last season given the OL but his play this year was inexplicable. His turnovers were generally just mind numbingly stupid. A friend of mine kiddingly said the only explanation was that he was throwing the games.

I'm not sure you can blame the QB without also mentioning the bad playcalling, bad o-line, weak running game, and terrible WRs and TEs though

oh and the terrible clock management

and the bend but keep bending defense

and the horrendous special teams

basically what I'm saying was the team was bad

He's Denard in the pocket, minus Denard's gamebreaking running ability.

He wasn't the gamebreaker Denard was, but I think Gardner had excellent running ability.

Gardner dominated games with his arm and legs in a way Denard never did. Think of the South Carolina bowl game or Notre Dame two years ago.

Denard was faster than Gardner, but Gardner was bigger and stronger.

The common denominator was that they could both run the ball and dumb *** Brady Hoke made them into pocket passers. It was the same stuff we were complaining about with RichRod taking a team built (unsuccessfully) for Man Ball and turning them into a spread option team. Hoke did the same damn thing, only he was able to fix the defense (making it "ok" instead of "historically bad").

If only RichRod had been able to hire a DC...or recruit.
