Hey, you know how you speak to old guys and they tell you about the time when the Detroit Lions were the best team in the NFL and we all kind of look at them with a "yeah, right' type of reaction because we can't possibly imagine a time like that.

That will be us 20 years from now talking about Michigan to some young 20-30 year old, talking about when Michigan was a great program and used to win the Big Ten. They'll look at us like we are crazy.

It's over, Michigan fans. This program is finished. Destined to win between 4 and 7 games for a generation. Hope you have good memories of 1997 - because that's the closest you'll ever get. The way the old guard pissed on Rich Rod when he came here, and backstabbed him has set the tone. Rich Rod is coaching in a Conference Championship game this week, Brady wouldn't even be allowed in the stadium to watch. This is what you get for being stuck in a long-past era. This is all the fault of the blue hairs in the Michigan family. Go worship Bo's grave now.

Wow. Talk about an over reaction. One good hire put Michigan back on track. A lot of people thought Ohio State was finished after their sanctions. There are plenty of teams that have fell in college football only to rebuild a few years later. U of M still has a lot to offer players/coaches.

You remind me of that show "The Big Comfy Couch".

You make me want to stick a coat hanger up my nose and rip my brains out through my ears.

No worries, the entire fanbase has this all solved with the hiring of a coach sporting a career 29-21 record at the Power5 level.

Guys I was just having some fun with you. Some Michigan fans are taking all of this too seriously. But I do think it's going to be awhile for them to straighten it out, but Hoke can't remain. I like the guy, but this is too big for him.

I'm fairly certain Hoke will be let go today. I would not be surprised if the next HC isn't announced for a month, as I believe UM understands how crucial this hiring is in order to prevent a significant reduction in attendance and overall revenue. UM has several projects in the athletic department that likely depend on football generated revenue, so fading into permanent Illinois or Northwestern territory would definitely not be in the department's best interest.

I think they were in much worse shape when Rodriguez left. Hoke has recruited well, improved graduation rates and will leave a balanced roster. It's teed up pretty well.

What was Jim Tressel's record at the Power5 level when he went to OSU?

The Harbaugh thing.............I don't think Jim would accept going to the Raiders. The Raiders are a mess, not just as a losing team, but as an organization. If he's clashing with the Niners, imagine the disaster of Mark Davis vs. Jim Harbaugh. Plus, it was cost the Raiders two draft picks - the very thing a new coach would need. Add to that the fact that the Raiders might be moving and there are a number of possible destinations - San Antonio, Los Angeles, Portland, Toronto...........too many moving parts, he wouldn't accept it. The Jets could happen, but he'd have to get the GM job too.

If I was going to guess Harbaugh moves to another NFL team it would be the Chargers, if they should be disappointing in the playoffs or the Rams, who seem to be destined for Los Angeles.

Jim could very well be using Michigan's misery to set up his next NFL gig. I think Jim Harbaugh loves Jim Harbaugh, and not Michigan (in it's current state).

But having said that - if Jim Harbaugh does go to the Rams - Would Jeff Fisher be a good fit at Michigan?

So many moving parts, but they might keep Brady one more year to see if with the Dave Brandon chains removed, he could be a legit coach - and because the guys they'd like might not be available for another year.

Think about this - if Lloyd had held on for one more year, there is a really good chance they would have likely hired Harbaugh then.

I think where it really came unglued is, unlike Bo and Mo, Lloyd did not have that ready made next guy on his staff for that smooth transition.

Lloyd was completely checked out in 2007. If I recall he wanted to leave in 2006 but was coerced to stay one more season -- in hindsight UM football might be in a better position today if Lloyd retired earlier.

Multiple sources I spoke with told me Jim Harbaugh has already told Michigan that he is not a candidate.

Sources tell us that Michigan has reached out to Butch Jones as well. Jones will not be a candidate at Michigan.

It is our understanding from sources at Michigan that there is significant disagreement within the building in Ann Arbor regarding the potential candidacy of Les Miles. Hackett very much considers Les a friend and a candidate he would like to pursue. Others in the department do not believe this is in the best interests of Michigan and fear that Les would publicly acknowledge their interest but ultimately choose to remain at LSU, giving the Michigan search a very public black eye.

Why is pursuing Les Miles and being turned down a black eye bad enough to use that as a justification to not even engage in discussions with him?

I have concerns about Les, don't get me wrong, but looking bad if he turns down UM sure as hell isn't one of them.

Or, to put it another way, pretty much anyone I am interested in would bear a risk of turning down UM because they have other good options.

In a weird way, I want there to be a not-insignificant risk they are turned down, if that makes sense.

Yeah, I found that curious as well. It's already happened before, and no one saw it as a black eye.

Thinking on it more, I suspect those are just the magic words they use to dismiss a candidate without having to articulate exactly why he is unattractive.

Even if Hoke is fired today, I'm a little worried about finding the right person. I guess the only saving grace here is that there IS a good amount of talent coming back, especially if Funchess decides to stay so he can learn how to catch all the passes.

So perhaps if someone comes in who can coach even a little we can be looking at 7 or 8 wins next season.

My how far we have fallen.
