Detroit Tigers trade Adames, Smyly and Jackson for David Price

Recommended Posts

Yeah that's way too high of a price. Cespedes is a good player but he's not worth Smyly, Jax, and Adames.

I like the idea of getting creative with JV come playoffs but something tells me his ego would get in the way. If Verlander did not go to the bullpen willingly, is it really worth the controversy it would create? Probably not.

It's Brads job to do what's best for the team regardless of how JV might handle it. If Brad doesn't make the best move for the Tigers based on a players possible reaction I don't want him as our guy.

With that said, I think JV would willingly move if he thought it would improve our odds of winning it all. He wants a title

I saw him give a talk at a conference last year and he said that all front offices know what they're doing except the Phillies.

there was a long discussion about the Phillies on Olney's podcast this week, could even have been Law - but the point being made was that even if a management team doesn't feel a sabermetric approach is what they want to use, they still have to be up to speed on all facets of the new metrics because that is what the people they are trading with are using to do their player evaluation, and if they don't know how the people across the table (across the cell signal?) are valuing players, they will be at a disadvantage in any trade discussions with them. Seems a pretty fair point to me. Know your enemy being straight out of Sun Tze and all. But at least according to discussion on BBTN, the Phillies won't even use enough quantitative faculty to get them to that point.

Sounds like it was Andrew Miller for Adames before DD backed away b/c the Tigers emerged as front runners for Price around the time the game against the White Sox got underway. Miller ended up getting traded for Eduardo Rodriguez, who was a consensus top 100 prospect heading into the season.

Smyly was the center piece needed to go to Boston for Lackey but they held off and then used both to help get Price.

Jackson was basically traded for Nick Franklin. That's the part of the trade that is still a bit cloudy as there hasn't been much reporting on that end of things. It made sense for a Seattle b/c they had no CF and they were dealing from a position of strength. TB must be high on Franklin as a potential Zobrist replacement and Seattle may have demanded Jackson in return as incentive to help complete the deal and then Detroit ok'd Jackson's inclusion.

The only thing that would've made yesterday perfect was if they also got Miller. Maybe they can sign him in the off season.

EDIT: also if they would've gotten Jose Abreau....sigh

Tropicana Field may be a dump, but does Comerica Park have DJ Kitty? Case closed...

The fact that we couldn't get Tampa to throw DJ Kitty in the deal just shows Dombrowski is an IDIOT!

'They said your methods were . . . unsound.'

'And what do you think? Are my methods unsound?'

'. . . don't see any method at all . . .'

The Twins are anti-sabermetric, by all accounts. Other teams too. The Phillies are clueless on a good day, and delusional on most.

Well the Phillies have a World Series title more recently than the A's and Tigers......so maybe that's why they think that way. They hang onto old players like Holland & Babcock.

I like the Tigers' move better than the A's move. I like Price better than Lester. Price will be in Detroit next year - not that that really matters in the context of today's deals - and Lester won't be in Oakland.

Here's a question that I am thinking about - would you trade Smyly, Jackson and Adames for Cespedes? I think that I would. (Nobody gives a crap about Jonny Gomes).

I wouldn't even trade Smyly for Cespedes. I'm not sure why people like Cespedes so much. However, I think playing in Fenway will help Cespedes.

FWIW, Tigers currently leading mlbtraderumors.com poll on "best deadline buy" at 48%. Next highest is A's at 20%.

HRs are hard to find these days and he hits them in a rough park for hitters. He's probably overrated, but still a very good OF.

Saw the Smyly interview. He seemed real disappointed to be leaving. I would have to imagine playing in front of seven fans is not fun.

Seven? It's a Rays attendance record!

Oh man that DD thing about texting Billy Bean "You have 1 minute to trade for Chris Sale" is f'n hilarious!

I wonder if this deal gets done if Jackson hadn't been on a nice little streak. I heard someone on the radio complaining that we traded Ajax just when he was figuring it out.

He was on a little streak, we know what he is, and that's a declining CF who was maybe a touch above league average when he was in his prime. Remember the playoffs last year? He may have had a worse postseason than Fielder. He sucks.

If contracts were not an issue, I'd certainly trade Smyly for Cespedes (but not all three). People like him because he's an all around player. Tigers fans are not accustomed to guys like that, but they are pretty useful.

I have completely given up attempting to have Twins position players on my fantasy team b/c of Gardenfire's insane mis-handling of players. It's virtually impossible to tell what the eff is going on with Minnesota from minute to minute.

He's almost a sub 300 OBP guy. It's not like he has elite defense or base running. I have a feeling if he spent time in Detroit and we got to see him everyday, he wouldn't be as liked by Tiger fans.

“Today stinks,” Max Scherzer said. “Today we lose Smyly and Austin. I know we’re getting David Price, and he’s a great pitcher and everything, but in this moment, it stinks because you’ve got to remember, we’re family in here, and Austin and Smyly are part of this family, and we’re losing two of our guys. I get that the guy we’re getting is very talented as well, but right now it stinks.”

Translation - "This sucks because now the Tigers won't help me get my price tag up for free agency."

They have a world series because Pat Gillick (an excellent talent evaulator regardless of what he believes in when it comes to stats) built a great team.

Unfortunately, Ruben Amaro has been doing everything he can to completely ruin it since he was hired. I don't think it's a stretch to say that the Phillies were in the pole position to be the Tigers of the NL East (but with a world series win!) but instead they're a joke team with a horrible payroll situation.

Trade would've happened either way......Legendary Lloyd would've figured out what was wrong........

BTW, I will not miss Rod Allen......saying at least 5 times a year .........that Austin Jackson has figured things out and changed his hitting approach again....
