Detroit Tigers trade Adames, Smyly and Jackson for David Price

Hearing some rumblings that the #Tigers may ramp up interest in Rusney Castillo with CF now open next year.

I’ve been hoping for this even before the trade created a more obvious hole in CF. There is no real OF help on the FA front for 2015. He will only cost $, no prospects or draft picks and could fill the biggest current need, now and in 2015.

Sign him, put him in AA or AAA for most of August and hope he follows the Puig/Cespedes/Abreu fast track. Maybe it’s a stretch to think he can help this season, but he does not have to be great to be better than Zeke/Davis in CF.

BA has a good, free report on him here:

That's the hope, but I wonder how much he is going to cost. After Puig, Cespedes and Abreu all doing well in the majors, it should push his cost through the roof. But then you still have to find an OF for next seasons somewhere.

Now that I think about it, didn't Price call out the Rays fans once when no one showed up?

Tweet when pretty much nobody came to watch them possibly clinch the playoffs at home: "Had a chance to clinch a post season spot tonight with about 10,000 fans in the stands....embarrassing."

Trade would've happened either way......Legendary Lloyd would've figured out what was wrong........

BTW, I will not miss Rod Allen......saying at least 5 times a year .........that Austin Jackson has figured things out and changed his hitting approach again....

No, but you will still hear him update us every time Austin has a good game for the next 2 seasons.

Word is, he's not at the level of Cespedes-Puig-Abreu (or Soler, who is killing it in the minors). That said, all 3 of those guys exceeded the expectations of the prospect-writing community. I remember reading that Cespedes could need at least a year in the minors. That Puig was good, but not on the level of Cespedes, and that Abreu was not on the level of Cespedes or Puig and that there were questions if he would ever hit enough.

All 4 of these guys have greatly exceeded or at least performed on the high end of expectations. The price has gone up for each player. Castillo is 27. Abreu got 6/68. I feel like that is on the high end of what it will take to get him.

This is the FA market for CF this offseason:

Emilio Bonifacio (30)

Franklin Gutierrez (32)

Colby Rasmus (28)

Chris Young (31)

Denard Span has a 9 million option that I imagine will be exercised.

DD always does seem to find a way to fill a hole, but we just traded 3 of our top 6 prospects, our best cost-controlled SP and our starting CF. 3 of the best remaining prospects (Ray, Moya, McCann) probably mean too much to the near future of this team to deal away for a CF.

Unless the cost is prohibitive, Castillo seems like the ideal way to fill that hole.

One wonders if that was part of Dave's thinking. There are 29 other teams out there though.

A Rays fan is saying Price nixed a deal to Pittsburgh. Not sure how he can do that without a no trade clause, but maybe Pittsburgh backed out when they heard of Price's reaction.

Everyone is fine with losing Jackson and cobbling together a platoon of Davis and Carrera/Dirks to make a run at the World Series, but they aren't good enough to run out there next year? Now we're setting our sights on Castillo?

I'm telling ya', there is a lot of people wearing rose colored glasses with this trade.

I would be after Castillo whether Jackson was here or not.

Well, truth be told, me too.

Same. I wanted this before Jackson was dealt. Also, at least some hope that Castillo could help this year.

The problem with Jackson is he is too damn streaky. This is a player we were just talking about releasing a month ago and whether or not he should be tendered a contract in the offseason.

Pittsburgh didn't have the money to pay Price 20 million next season, from what I have gathered so they backed out.

I too vote that Ilitch should spend his $ on Castillo.

The Nats won't trade Span in 14 and his option will be picked up, but he might be available this winter if Zimmerman moves to LF.

The Phils need to make some August move and Revere's defense might help (horrible reverse splits though; Wally could tell DD why)

Would the Cardinals trade Bourjos? or beter yet John Jay (LH)?

Is being streaky worse than being consistently average in terms of wins and losses?

I don't think it is but in the context of this season and conversation, I don't believe Jackson going forward is the player we are seeing currently. I really don't know what to expect from him.

Castillo would make a lot of sense if it actually happened. Davis/Carrera is a weak CF and few teams have a wide open spot for him to possibly step right in and start in CF. Plus, you could make an argument that they are below average at the other 2 OF spots and at 3B and SS and just average at catcher. Some of that growth to improve will need to be internal (maybe JD Martinez is for real, Castellanos and Suarez/Iglesias should improve the next few years and maybe McCann will serve as a platoon partner for Avila), but they'll need to patch other holes through FA or trades. The Tigers were in on Cespedes until they signed Fielder so its not like they haven't pursued Cuban FA's in the past.

Speaking of Cubans, I always said at the time that while I wanted Cespedes, not signing Soler was the big mistake. That was a cheap way to get a very nice talent.

The Tigers seem to really like the Venezuela talent pool to the exclusion of all (ok, most) others. They have had their Australian Brad Thomas types and their Fu-Te-Ni experiments. I would think this is because expanding the approach to these other talent bases is expensive or that foreigners just don't like the idea of Detroit because of the international stigma associated with our city. Just speculation.

Al Avila is Cuban-American...you would think he would have an affinity for Cuban players. He signed Brayan Pena and they got Jose Iglesias. So, maybe a push for Castillo is within the realm of possibility.

The report of the text exchange between Beane and Dombrowski was backward. DD didn't text it, Beane did, per #Tigers

I think so in the sense that streaky players lead to streaky teams and that can lead to play-off catastrophe (as well as success I suppose, but hot steaks always seem to be fewer and further between than the cold).

I actually wonder if the problem with AJax isn't just that he is prone to nagging injuries that he doesn't play over well such as in 2012 (abdomen) and 2013 (hamstrings). I tend to think the sudden revitalization coming in both the field and at the plate simultaneously this month is therefore more likely health related again this season than some subtle issue of batting mechanics or mental acuity cycles. I suppose some players do go on to string together multiple fully healthy seasons after multiple below par ones, but that seems to be the exception.

David Price will wear No. 14 and Ezequiel Carrera will wear No. 61 for the #Tigers.
