07/09/2014: Detroit Tigers (Scherzer) vs Los Angeles Dodgers (Greinke) 1:08

For my own sanity, I'm just going to assume that Ausmus is lying to reporters to cover up a small Cabrera injury following his triple last night.

I can't imagine a manager is that incompetent. They just had an off day and the All Star break is a few days away.

He definitely didn't look comfortable after the slide.

I think its fairly obvious Cabrera came up a bit lame after the slide.

Simple facts are you don't choose to give Cabrera a 'well-deserved' day off when your lights-out DH is also day-to-day...after a day off on Monday...when your playing a 1st place team...and just before the ASB.

But this ain't hockey, Ausmus could have just said he needs a break after a tough day...but chose not to, whatever. We all know the deal, he just looks a little foolish trying to pull over that excuse is all. Maybe he fooled Susie Homemaker, who is attending the game today for the first time and just wanted to know why one of the three players she knows the name of isn't playing. /we move on

That is below league average and near the bottom of the league. Who are these great hitters that are bunting? I'll give you Suarez but Romine has two, Scherzer has two, Jackson, Avila, Davis have one. Kinsler also has one so I guess that seals it. Detroit has 10 sac bunts by non pitchers and Oakland has six. I'm sure four more sac bunts prevented the Tigers from scoring 50 more runs.

No, it's the lineup and the base running, mostly.

Oakland has scored 42 more runs than the Tigers and have played 4 more games. Oakland has averaged 5 runs a game, so taking those games away, Oakland has scored 22 more runs than the Tigers in the same number of games despite having worse overall batting numbers and OPS+.

Looking into it deeper, it looks to me that it is largely due to Oakland having 25%+ more high leverage (as defined by baseball-reference.com) plate appearances than the Tigers and hitting much better in those situations. (PA = plate appearances in the table)

Detroit

Leverage...PA.....OPS.....Runs

High.........583...0.700....133

Medium....1144..0.810....137

Low.........1533..0.782....133

Oakland

Leverage...PA.....OPS.....Runs

High.........744...0.832....181

Medium....1208..0.701....129

Low.........1602..0.718....137

I have not been happy with Ausmus in general, but unless I have evidence his decisions led to relatively poor hitting in high leverage situations, I can't blame him for that.

Okay, I can understand that maybe Cabrera needs a day off after getting dinged up sliding into 3rd last night. Fair enough. But why do you bat Don Kelly 5th? How about 9th. Move everyone else up one spot and bat Don Kelly 9th. How about that?

Having better hitters hitting in high leverage situations will result in better performance in high leverage situations.

Men on base increases leverage, but so does the score of the game.

From a run scoring standpoint, looking at leverage only tells part of the story.

I think Oakland doesn't put its worst hitters at leadoff or in the fifth spot of the order. I think this results in more run scoring opportunities, and it's better hitters are the ones at the plate when those opportunities arise.

The fact of the matter is that batting your worst hitters leadoff and fifth is idiotic.

That is throwing away runs and wins in the long run if repeated.

This will still be true if Jackson and Kelly both go 4-4 today.

I've exhausted all my options. I'm blacked out. Anyone have a link for this one?

This may very well be part of it, but until I see evidence of it I assume it is largely random variation because MLB baseball is very much a game with random variation elements and assuming the null hypothesis seems the most fair thing to assume for me.

one thing for certain, a "day off" is not the same thing as an "off day."

they are going to score a lot of runs today because Miggy and Victor won't be clogging up the bases
