Tigers' Attendance, TV Ratings Down from 2013

Recommended Posts

http://www.crainsdetroit.com/article/20140703/NEWS/140709931/midseason-report-tigers-attendance-tv-ratings-down-from-2013

This is a couple days old, but didn't see it posted and find it fairly interesting.

Attendance is down about 2,200 a game - but I think things like poor weather in April may have hurt it. Additionally, that average will creep up in July and August with those being high attendance months with kids on summer break and such.

Games are also quite expensive and if I go I typically purchase on StubHub (cheaper & not fan of ownership). You'd think that with how expensive they are more people would be watching on TV, but...

...there has been a nearly 17% reduction in TV viewership. Any thoughts on that? As much as the late first half swoon hurt the team, the first month and a half they were fantastic and you'd think ratings would be high.

I think it's a bit of the Red Wings syndrome hitting the Tigers. A good number fans are not paying attention until the playoffs start since that's all that matters. Also, a ton of people are cutting the cord or at least cutting the cord on sports packages which is having a, currently asymmetric, impact across teams and various sports that broadcast exclusively on expensive cable packages..

I think that's the first time I've seen a $ amount published on what FSD pays the Tigers, $50 million.

I blame Joe Nathan.

Not surprised to see season ticket sales down "slightly". 5 in front of me and 3 behind me didn't renew this year and I know of a few others.

What Darko said. Also, I find that more often we are watching stuff on the dvr and I keep track of the game with the "at bat" app.

This team is too streaky to invest emotion in this year. They make you think they are going to win 110 games----and then make you wonder if they'll ever win again.

Once it gets into September and it gets close to clinching time, then the passion comes back.

On factor not mentioned in the article would be Verlander's and Scherzer's woes. People make a date/but tickets to watch a great pitcher. That has been absent in JV's case and some even in Max's case.

I have to admit, I don't seem to have the same passion as I did.

There has been a lot of discussion of the broadcast in other threads that doesn't need repeating, but I will note that this is first year of the Rod and Mario era that I have really consistently turned them off to listen to the radio even if the sync is off a little. Maybe I'm not the only one who is finding the broadcasts a little less enjoyable to listen to.

I've never hated them, but never been a fan. They are a little smug in my mind, but that wouldn't impact my desire to watch the game on TV. Josh and Gibby were excellent in my mind. I still remember Gibby going off on Randall Simon for lolly gagging...gained much respect for a home announcer actually being critical of a player.

I would like to know how many weeknight prime time games the tigers have had so far this season.

To me it seems like there have been very few relative to past seasons.

While I can't say it about any Tigers fans in Detroit, I know at least a handful of people that have simply canceled cable TV altogether because it has gotten too expensive. And of course, most MLB broadcasts now are on cable only.

My parents did it. They were paying something close to $200/month for cable and internet. My dad was like "the only thing I ever even like watching is Brewers games, but I'm not paying $200/month to do it. It's a waste of money given all the other crap that's on." I can't say I disagree. They now live off of public HDTV (lots of PBS nature shows that my mom loves) and occasionally Amazon Prime. But they also have some decent random movies on public HDTV from time to time.

One of my other friends basically did the same thing.

There's a lot of people out there who get cable mainly for the local sports team broadcasts, which is why the teams are negotiating such hefty payments for cable deals. But this in turn is raising cable prices to obscene levels, and I think it may be reaching a breaking point.

Well, yeah. I think there's quite a few ways to watch games...most of them probably illegal. I've been spoiled in the past by liking a team not in my home city, so MLB.tv always worked for me without cable. But I just don't have the money or time to watch games this year. My dad would love to get MLB.tv and be done with it, but of course the Brewers broadcast is blacked out where he lives.

But this wasnt illegal. That was my point. He said english espn required a cable login because he was in market but this channel didn't

I am about that point with cable as well.

We just don't watch much TV and the majority of our viewership is watching the Tigers and Red Wings.

Interesting. But I'm assuming the Tigers have to be on ESPN in the first place for this to work...

And sports is considered "DVR proof" by advertisers. People don't normally DVR games to watch later, thereby not being able to FF through commercials.

Hmm, maybe - a woman I work with DVRs the Tour de France and watches it when she gets home from work - 6+ hours a night :-)

Yep... but I was under the impression that there was no proper/legal way to watch a team in your market without subscribing to cable/satellite.... unless they were on an over the air channel. This could have just been a loophole they haven't closed.

I liked watching DVR'd Lions games last season. Got through the entire game in <90min without missing a moment of the actual broadcast.

The average amount of time that the ball is in play in an NFL game is 11 minutes.

I would happily watch a 15 minute version of a football game without any of the other garbage. Replays account for 15 minutes, and they have value, so maybe a 30 minute version would work, too.

I have definitely used my 30 second skip button between plays before when trying to catch up or watch a dvr copy of the game. Sometimes it causes a play to be missed, but whatever.

I don't have cable and for the most part don't miss it. I watch films and pay for mlb.tv. All I could get here if I had cable is the Mariners and our inferior cable company doesn't even carry them in HD.
