2014 Trade Deadline Chatter

Do throws saved or easy scoops missed by a 1b show up as good plays/missed plays in the DRS calc?

I just looked it up in the Fielding Bible and they do. Infielders who made the throws also get credit/discredit on such plays.

Admittedly, his ERA/WHIP numbers are worse than I thought, but I don't think wasting assets to acquire a John Lackey or Ian Kennedy type for a couple months is good distribution of resources. Maybe if Verlander gets shellacked his next couple starts and come July 31 we're tied with the Royals. Even then probably not as I don't think you can send him to the bullpen and the upgrade over Smyly is marginal.

As for next year, the market will be a lot bigger and more open come the off-season.

I wouldn't try to acquire a Kennedy-type either. If a top of the rotation guy like Price were available, it might be worth it.

Cabrera and JV still not recovered from core surgery:

The Detroit Tigers slugger said Monday he's not fully recovered from the injury, which required sports hernia surgery in late October, and it bothers him at times. He added that teammate Justin Verlander, the staff ace who's enduring a rocky season and had the same procedure in January, has been slowed down by the recovery as well.

I wish my muscles were not functioning the way Cabrera's muscles are not functioning.

Alright, who's the scum surgeon who performed these procedures?!? Get him on a train to Comerica ASAP so we can sacrifice him at second base in the name of a World Series title.

The thing with Cabrera is that he is such a good hitter he can adjust to his deficit by not taking the big swing as often and putting more balls in the holes and in the corners. But if things aren't right in a given AB, he Ks or whatever. So what? Unlike JV, who when he can't pull it together in a given 15 minute stretch he can't hide from giving up a few runs.

Hopefully both will get stronger. Miggy is still awesome but he's hit a lot of balls to the warning track/for doubles that seems like they would have been home runs at this time last year. And as you said JV hasn't had a place to hide this year. He's gotten some FB velocity back but I think he's using more effort to get that veloicty than he's used to.

And while I hope the core surgeries is indeed what is causing them issues, it still comes off as making excuses.

I highly doubt that the Tigers make any major moves before the trading deadline. However, I just read the article on DDs comments.........any playing down the possibility of a deal....... Probably means something big is about to happen.

Tigstown apparently suggested trading for zobrist.

Why would the tigers want to do that? I don't get it.

Max Scherzer and Robbie Ray to the Yankees for Ichiro Suzuki

did I mention that the reporters keep asking these All Star players what its like to be at Jeter's last ASG? I mean, I keep waiting for one of them to say..."Jeter has the privilege to be at MY all star game"

I think Cabrera is going to have various nagging injuries for the rest of his career like most big guys in their 30s. If it means, he'll hit like he has this year for the next five years, I'll be thrilled.

Now that Tulo and Cargo have said they would love to play for a winning team, maybe some sort of trade talk damn will burst. Not really sure what teams would have enough to make it happen though.

Well, Colorado has zero pitching. I dont think they have anything to lose. Hell, they are so bad at this point, Id say trade them both and get a bunch of pitching prospects.

In fairness, Zobrist is a switch hitter and can play all over the diamond, he'd be a good fit in the outfield and at short and could probably handle third as well but would cost a ton, not sure we have enough to get him!

A versatile LH bat? It depends at what cost to acquire. He has a team option next season for $7.5 million, so he could be helpful in making sure that Hunter is not resigned by filling that void. He hasn't played much CF in recent seasons, and that would definitely be appealing if he was able to cover CF, I would think.

It was a thing of beauty....

I know some don't like her but she's exactly my cup of tea at this point in her life....

There's more out there from that.

I don't get what she sees in Verlander.

Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers have reached agreement on a new contract that could exceed $202 million, sources told ESPN's Buster Olney.

Verlander's deal, which would make him the highest-paid pitcher in the game, is for seven years and worth $180 million, sources said. A vesting option for an eighth year could push the deal to $202 million.

Clayton Kershaw makes more, plays in LA, is younger, and is actually good.
