Would your head explode at the thought of Todd Bertuzzi extending for 2 years and 9 million?

Yes.

Step 3 - Do not.

You have a team that can't score goals, and you have a prospect who is one of the best goal scorers in the world, who would almost certainly be your leading goal scorer as a rookie, and would have been your leading goal scorer this past year. If he's not up, I don't know what the Wings are trying to accomplish.

Unless they start awarding half-goals for no-look passes or between-the-legs passes or for passing too much on a power play until you throw the puck out of your own zone, then the Wings need every goal scorer possible to compete with the high-level teams they are playing against. There's no good defensemen in the organization who aren't already with the Wings (and even half of them are dumpster fires full of traffic cones), so they're gonna need to score goals at some point.

That's extremely presumptuous.

As much as I have not liked the rate at which the Red Wings have promoted prospects, I find it hard to believe Mantha would be that ready to play in the NHL and they not call him up.

He's probably going to play at Grand Rapids at least a full year before they even consider it. If he absolutely dazzles in training camp, he might be a mid-season call up. If he dominates at Grand Rapids, he might get called up for a cup of coffee as a reward, but I don't think we'll see him as a regular until we are watching the games at Motor City Casino Arena.

Unless Bertuzzi and Cleary both decide they want to retire Kenny will be sure to have them back next year and Mantha will have no where on the roster to go. I was supremely confident that Dan Cleary wouldn't be back this season and then I saw Ken Holland resign him. I'm beginning to think both men have a job here until they decide to retire or until Kenny can convince me otherwise.

Kenny has THE BEST paleontologist in the biz. He'll dig em up when the season starts and they'll be wearing the red and white winged wheel.

No, because this time of all the young guys they were forced to bring up - only Jurco can now go back down without going through waivers. It's a numbers thing. They might sign two forwards in the offseason. One could be Alfredsson and the other is going to be younger than Bertuzzi, Cleary or Samuelsson. Kenny and Mikey finally saw the light this year. They may sign a veteran, but it's going to be someone closer to 30 than 40.

Babcock was on Western Canadian radio gushing about Mantha yesterday. He is in Quebec watching him play. Saying things like we have never had a prospect like him who has size and can score, phenomenal hockey sense. Babcock did say that while Mantha is a good skate, his pace will need to pick up for the NHL but that he finds that great prospects typically are able to make that adjustment once they start playing against NHLers. Babcock said Mantha can come to camp to compete for a job but that he doesn't know whether he'll be ready to play for the Wings or will need half a season or so in GR instead.

They could use a few 29 year olds. They have some good players 33 years old or older who are still strong but who are leaving their prime. We also have some good players who are 25 or younger who are not quite there yet. We could trade from either or both of these groups to get players in the heart of their prime.

Agree but something else they need are a couple gritty offensive wingers who are capable and willing to carry the puck into the offensive zone without taking the safe route to the outside along the boards where they are either moved off the puck in the corners by opposing players or forced to take low grade fluff shots at the net . This team is not a puck possession team and its time someone realized that.

The Wings were still top half of the league (12th) in possession stats. Probably not as good as they once were, but still decent. I am of the opinion that a couple of defensemen able to move the puck out of their own end with confidence and purpose would actually go a long ways to getting them back to near the top of the league.

Mantha scores with 54 seconds to go in Game 7 to lift his Val D'Or team to a 4-3 victory. Val D'or had led 3-0 entering the 3rd and 3-1 with 6 minutes left. They start the Memorial Cup in London on Friday versus the host Kinights.

Was actually hoping to see Val D'Or lose so Mantha could be added to the Griffins for the rest of their playoff run.

Hawks win. Advance to the conference finals for the 4th time in 6 seasons. With 2 Cups already in that span, a 3rd this year would be comparable to the Wings' best stretch of 3 Cups and 6 conference finals in the 8 seasons between 1995-2002. The Wings had President's Trophy wins in that 8 year stretch versus the Hawks' 1, but the Hawks' 3 Cups would be in 5 years to the Wings' 6 years. Go Ducks/Kings/Bruins/Habs.

Yes, I was able to completely manipulate a season's worth of data because I like the Red Wings.

You are like a politician that makes more people getting jobs sound like a bad thing because you aren't in office. You data manipulator, you.

Wings need a big body or two to f with the goalie. Franzen doesn't do that anymore and Tomas Holmstrom is retired (probably in a wheelchair by now). That's made a big difference, they don't screen goalies and don't get them flustered anymore. They need that.

If Kenny can find someone who does that AND gets weekly treatments for dialysis then we're set. Don't go thinking he's going to pick up some inexperienced 29 or 30 old though.

You manipulated a season's worth of data? This past season? What data did you manipulate that supports your statement that all the Wings really need is a couple of decent D men and all will be good and they'll be back to their winning ways again, a perennial play off favorite?

I don't need to support an opinion, which I stated it was.

You brought up possession. I showed that they were in the top half of the league in possession stats ( I was wrong, by the way, they are 10th...not 12th) to refute your point.

I offered the (again) opinion that if the Wings could get a couple of defensemen who are capable of moving the puck out of their own zone, that the Wings would be even better, IN POSSESSION STATS, and could work their way back up near the top. OF POSSESSION STATS.

I said absolutely nothing about "winning" or "perennial playoff favorites".
