Playoff Watch Thread: Extend The 22-Year Streak

Recommended Posts

"Our team is way better because we've got kids and they've won jobs and they're going to keep jobs," Babcock said. "We're way quicker and way harder, we're a more physical team. I like us."

I like those Babcock quotes. Because of the kids, the Red Wings are poised to extend this playoff streak for the foreseeable future. To be honest, I'm satisfied with making the playoffs this year. If they can pull the opening round upset, even better, but next year they ought to be legit contenders. It's all a matter of how well Holland can rebuild the defense corps.

Speaking of kids, just got back from an Avalanche-Canucks game. Nice to see Nathan McKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog, Ryan O'Reilly and others in action. Upside of the Canucks' demise is that ticket availability was the best in years. Bought a pair of club seats (17th row lower bowl, blueline) for $73 each via Stubhub, while the face value for them is a ridiculous $230 each.

In action tonight, the Rangers beat Buffalo and cannot be caught by the Wings. The Flyers however lost in regulation to Tampa and now each of Philly, Tampa and Detroit have 91 points with 2 games to go. Philly has a 1 ROW lead over Columbus and both teams have an insurmountable ROW lead over Detroit as a tiebreaker. The Jackets and Wings can put pressure on the Flyers with wins Friday while Phiilly is off until they play Pittsburgh on Saturday.

It doesn't matter what Philly does. The Wings can not go ahead of Philly. If the Wings finish with 95 points and Philly and Columbus both finish with 91, the Wings are still a Wild Card. The Wings can't not jump over a 3rd place team in the Metro Division. The Wings are locked into a Wild Card, the only team they could jump ahead would be one in their own division or the other Wild Card team.

It's not 1 vs. 8/2 vs. 7 anymore.

Now it's

Best Conference Record (Boston) vs. lowest Wild Card (Columbus)

Other Division Winner (Pittsburgh) vs. highest Wild Card (Detroit)

Then it's the 2nd vs. 3rd seed in each division....so

Montreal (2) vs. Tampa Bay (3)

NY Rangers (2) vs. Philly (3)

Then the second round matches Best record vs. Worst Record of who is left in the conference......

It's not about the wings being a wild card or not.

It's about whether they are the first or second, and philly matters in that regard.

The Wings can go ahead of Philly or Columbus. All 3 teams have 91 points with 2 games to go. If they finish ahead of either one, the Wings get the 1st wildcard. If both Philly and Columbus finish ahead of or tied with the Wings, the Wings get the 2nd wildcard. There could easily be a scenario where the Jackets get 3rd in the Metro, the Wings get the 1st wildcard and the Flyers get the 2nd wildcard.

No it doesn't. Goes by brackets now. If the Wings play the Pens in the 1st round, the Wings will be in the Metro bracket and the Pens-Wings winner would play the Metro #2-Metro #3 winner in the 2nd round. If the Wings play the Bruins in the 1st round, the Wings will be in the Atlantic bracket and the Bruins-Wings winner would play the Habs-Lightning winner in the 2nd round. You won't play a division winner in both the 1st round and the 2nd round.

If the Wings get the 1st wildcard, they'll start the playoffs in Pittsburgh next Wednesday a.m., with the early start intended to allow fans of Datsyuk and Malkin to watch them in Russian prime time. If the Wings get the 2nd wildcard, they'll open the playoffs next Thursday versus Boston in a Fenway matinee, the NHL's first ever outdoor post-season game. Under the new format, the lower seed isn't entitled to a playoff home game until they've won a road game, so let's hope the Wings at least get a split in the opening 2 games otherwise tonight's game could be the last at The Joe until the autumn.

Philly beat Pittsburgh today to clinch 3rd place in the Metro.

So for the Wings it's very simple. To get the 1st wildcard and play Pittsburgh, the Wings need a better result in its game in St. Louis tomorrow than Columbus gets in its game in Florida tonight. Otherwise, the Wings get the 2nd wildcard and will play Boston.

Some things we know so far:

- Boston has won the President's Trophy

- Boston has clinched the most points in the East

- Boston has won the Atlantic division

- Montreal and Tampa will play each other in the 1st round

- Pittsburgh has won the Metro divisoin

- NYR and Philly will play each other in the 1st round

- Columbus and Detroit will be the 2 wildcard teams in the East

- Anaheim has won the Pacific division

- San Jose and LA will play each other in the 1st round

- Minnesota and Dallas are the two wildcards in the West

- Either Colorado or St. Louis will win the Central and whichever teams comes 2nd will play Chicago in the 1st round

Jackets win. Wings will play Boston. Tomorrow's game is meaningless. And the Wings will enter their series against Boston with nothing expected of them by fans and media so no pressure. Should be fun, I am looking forward to it.

Wings will apparently start on Friday in Boston. You can count on that afternoon matchup for Easter Sunday. Every game in the series is scheduled for every other day.
