two comments from the regents meeting that make me think Brandon's tenure may be short;

From Schlissel

"What I want to be sure of is that athletics exist in an appropriate balance with everything else the university does. Athletics isn't part of the mission statement of the university. We're an academic institution, so I want to work on the appropriate balance between athletics and academics," he said

From Regent Bernstein

Enough is enough. It should be an experience – a place that resists the excesses of our culture. The fact that it's not (a pro sports spectacle) is what I love about our culture.

I think he is going to find himself a misfit with the attitudes of the incoming cadre of University leadership.

Yeah. Brandon isn't long for Ann Arbor.

Good riddance.

I can't help think the comment from Schlissel on his very first day on the job is especially telling. I can't imagine a more aggressive warning statement for the new University President to make to the athletic department than that 'you are not part of my core concern or our core mission'. That is like a 16 incher from the Iowa across the bow of Brandon's good ship football.

The last two Big 10 presidents that ended up out on their ear were brought down by their football programs. If I had just taken over a multi-billion dollar operation like a big 10 University I guess Iwould probably also be making it damn clear that my tenure was not going to be put at risk over a few million in football dollars.

I am not impressed. That was a Rich Rod level stupid comment about a program with Michigan's football history. I know he'll hear from those whose dollars he'll soon be begging for.

The alums are as unhappy about the state of the NCAA system as anyone.

As an alum I'm not sure what unhappy with the NCAA system means. Too much money? Pay the athletes? Loose enforcement of rules? There is much about it that I don't like but that doesn't mean I don't want the school to compete nationally or disregard the role of athletics in the culture and tradition of the school. Sports at Michigan are responsible for than the few million you note.

I think this is one of the great myths promulgated by athletic depts. Look at the list schools with with the top endowments. Most of them don't play div I football and Stanford had done fine with long periods of mediocre teams.

In a somewhat surprise pick: Brian Cole picks UM over MSU, OSU and TN.

He was thought to be a MSU lean. Believe he is a 4* on one site and 5* on another. Was recruited as a WR by UM.

It would be a myth if I said ALL schools.

I think Michigan has done a pretty good job of balancing athletics and academics. Of course if the new President is serious he can confront the most significant imbalance...relaxed academic requirements for scholarship athletes. Otherwise, he would be better served to embrace the program for the fundraising platform the culture, active alumni base, national profile, etc. it adds.

Interestingly, I heard one grad student opine that Schlissel's ("not core mission") comment was probably directed mostly at the academic faculty, as animosity to the athletic dept runs high in many regions of the faculty. The theory being Schlissel was seeking to position himself more in regard to them rather than the comment having any direct implication for Brandon. I also saw in the News that when he was asked about the comment by the News, Brandon basically said that he took it for no more or less than the statement of a true fact.

That is interesting. There is that view in academia that sports are anti- intellectual though so I suppose it's not surprising. I am sure it looks a lot different from the inside than the outside.

If the State of Michigan were to put an Apollo Program investment into its two football programs we might defeat the State of Alabama's football programs.

As weird as it is, alternate unis help with recruiting. Ask Oregon. They are only wearing them for one game, how is that ruining the greatest uniform in sports?

HaHa - When you have a base uni as ugly as Oregon, any kind of uni change has to help recruiting!
