Joe Nathan Signed 2 year deal.

Recommended Posts

Kluber was in the rotation all year and Salazar was pitching down the stretch for them. They lost two in the bullpen. They were one of the luckiest teams in the last decade last year! I doubt Murphey makes is that much of an upgrade!

When the Tigers win the World Series in 2014 with Robbie Ray throwing smoke out of the pen, pitching effectively in that role as Smyly has done, then moving nicely to the rotation in 2015, working for $10 million less per year than Fister, you're gonna like this trade.

That's a bit of a ridiculous way to look at it, unless you are giong to throw all the roster changes into the equation.

I'm of the opinion that the deal last night and the Nathan signing today work very much in concert with each other. The timing in particular (how the signing was nailed down within 24 hours) makes it seem that way. Looking at it in those terms, it makes more sense to me. It's all up to interpretation, and by all means, you're entitled to disagree and think my logic sucks.

I'm still cautiously optimistic going forward. It'll be nice to have a decent end of the bullpen for a change.

Disagree...good/great starting pitching is the "holy grail". See Atlanta Braves, Bobby Cox era.

In general yes, but the Tigers are the exception that proves the rule. The number of SP shutout outings where they eventually lost the game has to be some kind of record, 3 or 4 for Verlander in September alone.

Nathan was a good signing. Back in 2012.

Hard to believe this is for less than 2/$20 given he opted out of $9 million in 2014.

Kluber is hardly "great" and certainly no better than the Ubaldo they had for the last 4 months of the season this year. But yes, Salazar is a stud. I still expect a bit of regression to the mean from that team, though. Who's their closer?

Kluber 8.31 K/9 2.02 BB/9 46% gb rate 3.10 xFIP. He's really good. He's great.

I assume their closer is Cody Allen and he's also a stud.

I expect regression from them too. Unfortunately, I also expect the Tigers to be much worse.

Still not seeing how this gives them a good back end of the bullpen. They replaced Benoit with Nathan. That's pretty much a wash at this point. After that, you have Rondon and Al. Not good.

And Don Kelly becomes the leftfielder with 35 homers, 90 rbis and .320?

The situation is they had to make some room for a closer, which was a more desperate need than the 4th starter because they had capable guys in Porcello and Smyly to take that role. The team is starting to be a little more financially responsible and some of you are getting silly. This isn't a video game, you can't just have everything you want at no real cost.

See "2013 Detroit Tigers".... how'd that work out for us? We had the best rotation of the past decade last year, and we still didn't make the World Series.

This is the price of doing business in this league... they are trying to retrofit the roster, and in order to do so, they have to free up money. He apparently felt that Fister was the best piece to do so. Do I wish the deal was better? Yes, of course.

But comments like "three expansion draft players"? That's a clown comment, bro.

Nathan is a lot better option at closer than Benoit is... I say this having watched my fair share of Rangers baseball this past couple of years.

But that's the problem. I don't think anyone actually cares that Fister was traded. One of the pitchers had to go, and honestly, Fister is the guy I wanted traded of the six possible candidates.

It's the return they got that's pissing everyone off. It's worse than I could've ever imagined getting.

Harold Reynolds "hatin on" the Tigers deals so far. Says they are clearly worse than the team that did not go to the WS in 2013.

They've given up the same number of runs the last 3 years. It's not that big of an upgrade. Benoit was great last year.

Lynn Henning says they might be still in on Benoit. Or at least he wouldn't be surprised if he re-signs.

Correct......IT'S ABOUT THE RETURN, or....lack of return.

I don't see a lot of people arguing that the Tigers shouldn't have traded Fister. It appears that people are unhappy with the return, and there is a substantial difference between the two. Redistributing payroll resources is fine. Giving away two years of control of a very good Starting Pitcher, is not.

Hey, I wish we could have gotten more as well. But for the love of God, comments like "we recieved three expansion type players"? That's some major hyperbole.

It's gonna be fun returning to these threads in a couple of years and laugh at some of these overreactions...

If Harold doesn't like it, then it means I will probably love it....never been a fan of his analysis.

Hard to disagree with that comment, though I don't trust Reynolds as the messenger.

Dude, get over it. That Fister trade blew ballz. He was WORTH more than we got for him. Everyone gets WHY they traded a pitcher away.

I have been telling anyone that would listen that Porcello/Scherzer/Fister...one of those guys would be gone before next year. I expected it....I am sure most people did. Do we all hate DD now because of the trade? No of course not. He had other things in mind and is obviously working with some kind of ceiling with payroll this year. We still got fleeced in that deal. It is alright to say that and still hope to hell he brings in talent to make us forget it. This is the first step....if it is the last step this trade blows...if he does bring more in (which I do expect) I will breathe easier....we are still worse than we were last year at this point.

If there is not a walmart black friday line outside of Hennings house, right now, to kick him in the groin, then I have lost all faith in humanity.
