Ah there's the excuse I was looking for! "He's so young!!!!!"

This is his 5th NFL season. No more excuses.

Believe me, I am disgusted at how terrible he can look at times too, but right now in the middle of the season, not much can be done to change things at the QB position. Hopefully, the good to great Stafford plays the rest of the season instead of the below average to terrible Stafford. Burleson will help Stafford out when he comes back as he gives him a bigger threat compared to what the Lions currently have besides CJ.

On the bright side, the Lions are still in first in their division and can still win the division.

You have no excuses either for your pig disgusting posting. There were several key drops in the game, specifically one by Ross that would have gave the Lions a 1st down and maybe some momentum in a 30-27 game. Not to mention the Calvin drop on 4th down on the first drive, the drop on the absolutely perfect long pass with 4 minutes left by Ogletree, and a few others that happened over the course of the game.

Sure, it was rainy, and that made it tough, but Stafford made plays -- enough of them to win -- but they lost. Sure, his INT was bad, but at that point his WR weren't catching anything and he just tried to make a play. It happens. It's certainly more excusable than the ********* effort by the WR in this game.

At the start of this season if you suggested a split from the road games in Chicago and Pittsburgh, most of us would be happy. We own the tiebreaker with the Bears and if we beat the Packers Thanksgiving it goes a long way to getting a home playoff game.

But Tampa scares me. I worry our team does not take them seriously, and looks ahead to Green Bay.

But, if they lose to Tampa they don't deserve the playoffs.

What are you going to do when you have a secondary like this? The Lions must have the worst CBs in the league. Chris Houston has been awful. Mathis has been awful. The only good thing about Mathis and Houston? They're not Bentley and Slay.

Seriously, can Mayhew do us all a favor and not draft any more RBs or CBs? They do better with waiver wire guys than draft picks at those positions.

If anyone thought the Lions were actually going to win this game...it's because you don't know your Lions. The next two games make or break the season.

Our secondary certainly is heinous.

It still feels weird watching the Lions play meaningful games though

Yah, the CBs have been awful.

Stafford had a bad day, but he's been great this year. Look at his numbers, he was legitimately in the MVP race.

We lost a close game out of conference on the road. Its not the end of the world. We have 2 home games against relatively weak teams coming up. We just need to take care of business.

The bothced fake certainly is relevant, but it did not lose the game. After that both of these happen...

with score 27-30:

Ross drop. Stafford rolled right and hit him in the chest with a 1st down throw.

Ogletree drop: Stafford launches a long pass, ball goes through Ogletree.

Either of those 2 keeps a drives alive and we still tie with a FG or lead with a TD.

Also...Don Carey has no business on the field unless its special teams.

They had the first down on the fake field goal if Sam Martin had held on to the ball. Nobody's fault but his own. It was well-designed and took advantage of an exploit in the FG defense that was called. Don't fumble, and it's a first down.

Fake Field Goal

Martin was stopped for a 3-yard gain on fourth-and-5, the Steelers recovered a fumble at the end of the play, and on the ensuing possession they drove 97 yards in 16 plays for the go-ahead, momentum-shifting touchdown to beat the Lions, 37-27.

I disagree with this. Carey has been one of the better players in the secondary this season. He had a great game against the Bears.

Carey was awful against the Steelers. Like the worst player on the field. Which is hard to do when you're on the same field with Chris "15 yard cushion" Houston.

This is why it is moronic to use punters as holders for placekicks -- use a backup QB who can actually DO something if you want to try a fake.

Didn't Griese hold for PKs when he played at UM? A QB at holder makes too much sense for modern coaches I guess.

It's a matter of NFL practice restraints. They place a punter at the position because they have more opportunity for field goal reps.

I'm curious as to why a team with a player used almost exclusively for kick returns hasn't been tried at the position.

This.

I also thought your back up or third string QB would be an option. A guy like Mike McMahon would've been a great option as a holder. Good feet, decent arm... he would have been a double threat in a fake situation.

Of course, now that I think about it, teams don't typically dress the 3rd QB, do they? Do they still have that rule were you can consider your 3rd string QB not active but still use him if your first and second string QBs are knocked out of the game?

Typically the 3rd QB is long shot they are looking to develop. That's the kind of player that needs to spend every second around the other QBs. I actually like the idea of using the return specialist.

The NFL got rid of the 3rd QB being inactive and instead just gave each team an additional active player.

Yea, they are typically inactive.

Special team personnel is one of the more fascinating aspects of NFL rosters, IMO. I've always been frustrated by the use of a roster spot on a LS specialist, and I am not particularly fond of the Lion's use of a player like Michael Spurlock who brings nothing to the table outside of a decent return performance (at least Stephan Logan had a few offensive packages - for better or worse.)

I wish the Lions would cross-train a fullback for the LS position. We wouldn't have to change our base offense at all - which means we would have games where he would never need to line up in the backfield. But for games in the rain or snow, or some 4 minute-drill situations, we would have a player who can play that lead blocker role.
