So because we criticize Josh Smith for being an idiot we're not older than 19.

You're laughable.

He has also been here for 11 years. This board has been generally clean and decent compared to most basketball boards and we want to keep it that way. You've been here for a month, settle down, keep the childish stuff on mlive.

Perhaps you should go back and read Scrub's posts and realize that he was constantly insulting me and Bryan in every single post. I did not throw one single insult his way. Do your research please.

More KCP.

More Singler.

More Datome.

Less Bynum.

No Bynum+Stuckey.

Less Smith+Drummond.

The GOOD:

Singer was +26 tonight

Datome was +18

The HORRID:

Smith was -28

Monroe -22

Drummond -18

Hibbert with a flagrant foul. Weird play. They take it away, I think that's a good call.

Just saw this play on the replay. It should've never been called a flagrant foul. I agree.

Wow,

Just went through and read this entire thread. Argue your points. I have no problem with that. If you think Smith is the worst player since whoever, go for it and mention why.

But when we start seeing words like idiot and personal insults to people on the board, it's taken it too far. And, particularly if you are a relatively new poster, I'd think it would be smart to mind your Ps and Qs. This isn't some hack sports site where we are going to tolerate that garbage. If you want to insult anyone, PM me and insult me to your heart's content. I can deal with it.

It's too bad I haven't been able to be around during the games. I'm watching this one on the replay. Well, trying to watch it, but I got preoccupied reading posts in this thread and pretty much missed the entire third quarter.

Test it one more game, and see what happens.

I didn't get to really sit back and watch the second half like I wanted to, but it's hard to be upset with the Pistons' effort overall. Indiana is a tough team, and for the most part they were competitive throughout the contest.

The Pistons are 2-2 and there are facets of this squad that makes them look more legitimate than they've been in awhile. I'll take the start to this point.

Jennings and Smith combined for 36 FGA's and shot a combined 30% (Jennings was 6-20 and Smith was 5-16).

The other 3 starters took a combined 20 shots. 22 shots if you want to swap Singler for Billups since he played more minutes than Billups did.

5-25 from three. That's the ballgame folks.

The Pistons found that it's not so easy to score inside against a team that can match their frontline so they resorted to chucking threes which is their obvious weakness. I would like to have seen Datome and KCP get more run in a game like this, try to speed up the tempo and get the Pacers out of their comfort zone.

I hate the fact that Cheeks hardly plays those two because they're rookies, i despise that method of coaching.

Also, we have a problem with Smith. Million dollar talent, ten cent brain. I hate to keep harping on this but he's at his best when he's not handling the ball and when he's crashing the glass (like he did in the 2nd). I hate when he meanders on the perimeter and chucks up shot after shot or when he tries to act like a point forward with too much handling of the ball. UGH!!! His statline always looks good but stats only show a small fraction of his true play. Anybody who watches him play regularly sees that he makes more bad plays than good. They really need to sit him down and tell him that he needs to play within the team system.

I do like his defensive intensity though and he has been great with those weak side blocks. He's just killing us offensively which is my biggest beef with him.

Overall, i'm actually pretty content with the team play in general. It looks like a bottom level playoff team with room for improvement.

Agreed. The effort level is there, no one is taking plays off. I especially love how active Jennings is on defense, he is well positioned and makes good reads on passes and drives.

A few things need to be cleaned up for the Pistons, namely the rotation:

-KCP, Datome and Singler need to play.

-The starting big 3 should only be on the court to start, for the first few minutes. The middle becomes too clogged.

-Can Cheeks teach Stuckey to avoid a defender, twice last night Stuckey was called for a charge on a scored bucket. It happens every game and hasn't changed since he was drafted.

-Josh Smith is a really good defender, he has been fun to watch. Chase down blocks and active hands. We all know about his horrid 3 point shooting. Everyone is getting to know each other and their role, it will settle down.

-Bynum and Stuckey together is a horrible idea.

The Pacers are just as good as anyone, it was a hard fought game. The difference came down to 3 point shooting though. If you watched the entire game no one really had an advantage. Indiana made some perimeter shots, the Pistons didn't, simple as that.

Very encouraged with this team going forward. Once the rotation gets figured out and players learn their roles things should come together. But that is all on Cheeks now. He needs to put the pieces together.

I'm 29 and I spend a lot of money on this team.

I mean... my fellow Detroit sports fans' tendency to talk about rainbows and sunshine instead of analyzing what is really going on and talking about the problems kind of embarrasses me. I expect a lot from this team, the rest of you should as well. At what game am I allowed to start being critical of what is going on on the court?

You and Unlock The Shrine are critical about EVERYTHING that happens on the court.

When the Pistons went on the big run in the 2nd quarter, not a peep from either of you.

Now, i understand that the team has its warts and that Smith is frustrating to watch but it seems like you guys ***** and moan just for the sake of bitching and moaning.

Which is precisely why the Pistons oughtn't have signed Smith unless they plan to deal Monroe.

No, he cannot him that.

Stuckey is what he is at this point and is unlikely to change significantly independent of who his coach is. Especially since he doesn't appear to me like the type of guy who actively looks to evolve / grow his game. I suppose to be fair I should addd that I really don't care for Stuckey.

-Josh Smith is a really good defender, he has been fun to watch.

Yeah, he is.

Yes, it is.

This is the crux of forums IMO....when things are good it is crickets....when things are bad people come out of the woodwork to ***** and moan...

Generally speaking I think it is a mentality that manifests itself as a relief valve for people to rail on a bunch of super rich guys that get to play a game for a living while the rest of us slave away for peanuts.

Very rarely will you see people talk about the good during a game, but the bad gets wailed on....the good comes in the form of 'good game' when the game is OVER ...AND they won. That is usually the extent of it.

I am not railing on you guys specifically...just speaking generally...

People as a group are much more likely to complain when something upsets them than offer a complement when something pleases them.

I think this is a big part of the reason why it is hard to get a good balance / truly fair perspective in the message board format, especially since most posters are heavily emotionally invested in the team(s) they are posting about.

That written, I don't care for over the top negativity despite recognizing it is a likely fact of life.

My beef with Unlock The Shrine is that all his posts are criticizing Josh Smith, pretty much every single one. It reeks more of an agenda than discussing the game with his fellow Pistons fans.

I have been negative as well and been harsh on Smith but what he does is being negative for the sake of being negative IMO.

I won't harp on this anymore because i don't want to clutter up the thread any longer. It was just something that i've noticed lately and had to get off my chest.

This pretty much sums it up well. There has to be some sort of balance.

I know I can ***** and moan with the best of them, but it is important to give credit where it is due (unless it's Leyland of course). So when it comes to hammering on Smith it's a little off base. Regardless of his basketball IQ, he plays extremely hard and is an excellent defender.

Game threads are my outlet, I am a single guy who watches all of these games by myself. I enjoy being on here to discuss the game and point things out that I find interesting. The personal insults, 4 games into a season, is just taking things a little too far. It's a basketball opinion.

We have plenty of negative posters on the MB, Bryan and Unlock have been aggressively negative and over-reactive. That's fine for a game thread or two during the season...it's another thing for every game of the year. I think the reaction to them has been more due to some of us being concerned that this is what we are in store for all year long. It's bad enough when the team is 15 games under .500...but at 2-2 it's unbearable.

My thoughts so far, Smith seems to be playing pretty out of control right now. His career avg is 2.6 TO/g. If he's averaging more than 3 by the end of the year I'll be surprised. It's clear the team needs time to gel...I'll give them to mid-December to figure it out before I get too concerned.

I think this game was the worst case scenario of expectations for Jennings and Smith with them taking 20 shots a piece, hitting barely 30% of them, too many TO's and too many 3's. This is also the first game they're starting together. Monroe needs to step up as THE team leader...start demanding the ball more and holding players accountable.

Despite their poor performance, we really were in this game and we shot even worse from behind the 3 pt. line then our likely low % expected. We hit 3 more 3's and shoot a terrible 32% as opposed to an unconscionable 20%(at least for that many attempts) and it's a very different game.

My biggest concern with last night's thread (after seeing it later in the night) was the attacks on message board members. Beyond that, I have no concerns with the negative posts about particular players.

People have different ways of watching games and "enjoying" their hobby. I know 12 years ago my posts were filled with a ton more spite than I put into them today.

This. And it really goes for the entire team. There are too many new pieces on this team. They need to figure out how it's going to work. This is the process toward finding that.

We lost to one of the teams that is supposed to compete for a title out of the East...we did not get embarrassed like I thought we might. I am happy with the outcome. I think it is unrealistic to expect GREAT things out of this roster right now. MAYBE 20-30 games in after they have had a chance to gel. Some people expect more...I just do not find that thinking realistic.

Given Cheek's history of letting inmates run the asylum, pieces probably won't start falling into place until a player like Monroe or Billups start making accountability demands.
