around .300, 30 HR, 100 RBI

But, would he steal enough bases to be considered a good player if he did that?

But they also had no second baseman and an epic bad year from Inge. I don't think this team has anything like that.

Jackson also had the worst year of his career and Hunter is an upgrade over Boesch.

If we are on a tight budget what about trading for Norichika Aoki from the Brewers. He's a slap hitter with limited power but provides a nice walk rate and I believe he could hit a little better in Comerica Park. He has a poor arm but great range which would be fine in left. He's got one year left on his deal and is only making 1.5 million. You might have to work out a three team deal to get them a first baseman using Dirks and maybe Perez! I don't think he will cost a ton!

I like Aoki but I think Rajai Davis can provide the same and would not cost prospects.

Nobody here has ever said you have to steal bases to be considered a good player.

With all these projections, calculations, and cold fusion, I feel like I'm watching an episode of the Big Bang Theory.

Had an interesting conversation with a couple post-grad physics braniacs. They love that show's first season for all the knowing humor about their experiences. They say that after that it just becomes a bunch of nerd jokes.

Probably the same way military families felt about Major Dad.

This team as it stands right now, will not score as many runs as last year's team.............That being said, this team has a very good chance of winning more games because of better defense and more speed on the bases. Plus, I think that Smyly will make most Tiger fans forget about Doug Fister.

I think I know what you mean, but if better speed on the bases didn't translate exactly into the ability to score runs mores it doesn't help them win more games. Let's say they will be able to score more runs than last year's team would have given the projected drop off in hitting. Though it may still be less overall it will be less by less if they run better

Sorry wrong font color, Mister Serious. BTW, how is General Custer today? Is being the fun cop and having that as your avatar ironic or hypocritical?

It's a lot harder pitching a full season than a half season, so I wouldn't assume you can project his career performance into next year. I think you are underestimating how good Fister has been the last three seasons. He's been one of the top 30 pitchers in baseball and it won't be easy to replace that. They will also miss Smyly in the bullpen.

I agree with all of this. But, I feel I need to stick to my guns. Starting about this time last year, I have advocated for Smyly to be in the rotation, and feel he has the stuff to become a top 30 pitcher as well. I think Smyly will match the production of Fister, what I am not so sure about is who will match the production of Smyly out of the pen. I have never seen Krol pitch, I only see his stats, so I am not sure what his role will develop into.

Smyly has two things working for him, good stuff and good moxie. He never seemed to have two bad outings in a row, which is what allowed him to develop some mound presence. I am excited for a year of Smyly in the rotation. Durability is obviously a question mark, but until that durability wears down, I will operate under the premise that Smyly will pitch just as many innings as Porcello.

Who's being Mr. Serious?

You'll have to forgive me, but ever since Tigers fans got all pissy because people favored Trout over Cabrera, siting base stealing as a factor, the board is literally cluttered with snarky comments like "you have to steal bases to be considered good I guess" and it's silly. Nobody ever said that. If you were just being sarcastic or whatever, then cool. I really have no idea what point you were trying to make.

I chose Custer because he was called upon to help defeat the Indians, so I thought he could help us last summer. And it worked. All because my avatar! :)

Can't ever have too much moxie.

That has to be a joke. Only the people favoring the home town guy got 'pissy' right? NOWAY the pro Trout crowd EVER got 'pissy'.

You are the king of snark with one line comments in response to well thought out and written comments.

What is 'silly' is suggesting no one has ever used base stealing to promote a player they like. And making a concrete statement like 'Nobody ever said that.'

C - Avila, Holaday

IF - Cabrera, Kinsler, Castellanos, Iglesias

OF - Dirks, Jackson, Hunter

DH - Martinez

NonC bench - Lombardozzi (IF), Kelly (OF/CIF), .....?

Seems like a good spot for a platoon parter for Dirks and/or a guy that can cover CF. I suppose Kelly could be used for Jackson's days off, but it'd be nice to have a better option if/when he has a short DL stint. It seems like he's found himself shelved for a few weeks the past couple of seasons. I am not suggesting that he is injury prone, but it just seems like having a solution for consecutive games would be good.

Also, backup SS. I guess Lombardozzi plays once in a while if Iglesias needs a day off and Worth is 60 miles south if they need a longer term option?

Not sure what they do with that last spot, but they have time to wait it out and consider different options.

Edit: I knew Lombardozzi hadn't logged much time at SS in the majors (2 games), but I thought he played more SS in the minors than he actually did. Only 72 of his 2,033 defensive chances were at SS.

Of course that side did too, but that had nothing to do with my point.

Nobody ever said you have to steal bases to be good. People have said that it improves your value. It makes you more valuable, but it isn't a skill you have to have. I'm not sure why you still don't get this.

Typical DD speak. He gains nothing by saying "OMG we need to upgrade LF!!" I agree with him that a bounce back by Dirks would be ideal, but I don't think they're just going to assume that happens. He always says things like this when they're going after a replacement for said player.

Honestly, I really respect the Custer choice. I had my tag line Carthago Delendo Est for a while when the Twins were the team that had to be destroyed.

As a guy who can cover CF and platoon with Dirks, Franklin Gutierrez? Obviously he doesn't bring the power we'd like.

and/or, It doesn't bother me that Justin Verlander's BA in the ML is .000.
