Josh Smith agrees to $56 million deal with Pistons

Josh Smith has agreed to a four-year, $56 million deal with the Detroit Pistons, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Pistons pursued Smith the hardest, with agents Brian Dyke and Wallace Prather reaching an agreement with Detroit general manager Joe Dumars on Saturday morning, sources said.

Smith, 27, is one of the NBA's most unique and versatile talents, a 6-foot-9 forward who averaged 17.5 points, 8.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists for the Atlanta Hawks last season.

If it starts a bevy of unconventional moves for this franchise, then good. If it means Stuckey/Bynum at the PG, Knight/KCP at the SG and Greg Monroe at the PF, then meh.

Well, I guess when Dumars talks about stretching the floor, he didn't necessarily mean you had to make the shots. Just take them.

Here are the last 3 tweets from Keith Langlois. All within the last 10 minutes and all after the Smith singing became public. Not one single mention of Smith.

Me thinks Keith scheduled those tweets to auto post and he is sitting at the pool.

Watching #Pistons practice today, struck by how level of athleticism had spiked in 12 months. It just went up a few more notches.
Might not see lineup often, but Smith, Mitchell, Drummond, KCP & Knight would be breathtakingly athletic. Swap Monroe for Mitchell (more)
which is a very realstic lineup, and you still have high-end athleticism to go with offensive punch. Lots of options for Mo Cheeks now.

If you're not excited to see Josh Smith throw up 200 three pointers next year, you hate the game of basketball

I don't know. I suppose it's possible they can get him to take better shots, but if you do that he's a PF. So you have to trade Monroe. Which could be OK, except I assume Joe Dumars would end up getting something terrible for him, because that's what happens

not good. dumars will dump him in two years to some team who takes a 1st round pick to do it. this is ben gordon all over again.

It is BG 2.0.

Not that Smith sucks like BG. But they just paid a guy $14M per year that they don't have a position for.

They'll move Monroe and make a position for him.

No word on how the deal is structured. Just that its 4/$56M. Assuming they want the smallest possible cap hit this year, this is how it would break down.

I assumed they would move Rip too.

Hey, if they do then this isn't so bad. I just don't trust them to do the right thing.

Now if only Dumars had waited til now we could have traded away 4 picks to make room to pay Smith too much

I'm praying they do the right thing this time.

If Smith is the small forward with Monroe and Drummond, it's not going to help them very much.

what about a rotation of Smith, Monroe and Drummond at the 4/5 slot? That would be preferable to all three on the floor at the same time.

Pay $14M for a backup or to move one of your two best players to the bench? No thanks.

No....but what it does allow is for us to never have less than 2 of these guys on the floor at one time. Also, what this can do in the short term is not have the team take a huge step back in close games late in the 4th. Teams start playing Hack-a-Drummond and he can be taken out and we still have a stud defender at the 4.

It's always about the same thing...can a player make the adjustments needed to become an integral cog of a TEAM. Can Smith stop taking long 2's, and fewer 3's and work himself more into a team scheme then he played in Atlanta. Hopefully Cheeks can make this happen with a little help from (can't believe I'm saying this) Sheed. Can't say that bode's real well but we're in it now so...

Wouldnt we want the largest possible cap hit?

That depends on if they are done in free agency or not I guess.

I would think Detroit's next FA target absolutely has to be someone who can consistently hit jump shots outside 10 feet. Otherwise teams will simply stuff their defenders around the basket and dare the Pistons to shoot.
