Dexter: The Final Season

Recommended Posts

Actually, the spoilers I read were total BS.

The ending wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be but still bad.

Best episode of the season and probably turned out as well as I could have expected if asked a few hours ago, but doesn't even put any positive dent into the putridness of the season.

I absolutely hated it.

1) a 100 MPH hurricane was the size of a thunderstorm. WTF?

2) they didn't need to pull a House and show him still alive at the end.

3) someone physically murdering Dexter (Batista, etc.) would have been way cooler.

4) was there even a point to Deb being killed off?

A cop out ending that I'm sure was written that way to ease writing a potential spin-off in the future. I'll remember Dexter for the first four great seasons it had.

I was going to write a long post and nit-pick the finale, but in the end, it was so ridiculous, I felt I've already wasted enough time on this show.

The final season was terribly written, there is simply no denying that. The worst part being that their idea to escape the country forever, as wanted fugitives(well Hannah was making him an accessory) was to simply leave through the super busy Miami airport, where people like Elway would surely be looking for him. Seriously, you never had the thought to drive to another state or something to fly out, until the 2nd attempt? Anyways.

That said, I don't mind the way it ended. Again, the episode was not well written and there are a ton of complaints I had(most specifically nobody at Miami Metro ever figuring him out. Seriously?), but I thought the way they ended it made sense. I could have lived with either the suicide ending(would have been poetic and fitting IMO and few if any guessed that would happen), but I don't mind him still being alive. It kind of fits the show and here's why. Every season in itself and the show in totality was all about Dexter the serial killer trying to live a normal life and be a normal person, with normal relationships. Every season a different dream of his failed to some degree and by the end, with Deb dying, he finally realized that he could not have his cake and eat it too. He will always be a serial killer and that will always cause pain and death for the people around him., likely including his son eventually.

First, obviously him making it both in and out of that hurricane in his speed boat(and then swimming???) was ridiculous.

I know I mention it above, but I think Deb dying did have some importance. That was kind of the nail in the coffin, making him realize he couldn't have loved ones. I actually thought that part made sense.

Also, as a random aside, the faces Batista and Quinn made while watching Dexter stab Saxson might have made for the best moment of the finale. That whole situation was pretty ridiculous.

According to Dexter, Miami Metro has some of the worst detectives you can find. Dexter himself has been involved in so many deaths Miami Metro is aware of, yet the only two people who had any suspicions were Doakes and LaGuerta.

Hi I'm Dexter. I'm here to do a lab test on Saxson.

Oh, the serial killer guy who has killed about 6 people and just shot your sister?

Yeah, that's him. Where is he?

He's just sitting in the conference room, all by himself, without handcuffs, just passing time.

Ok, buzz me in.

Hey, this guy has killed about 8 people including his mother and your sister, would you like an armed officer with you while you do your tests?

No

Ok

Seriously. Just on Rita,Vogel and then him stabbing Saxson you would think maybe something is up. Not to mention his neighbor.

Finally finished the season last night. It was one of those shows that started really good, hit a peak and should've died about two seasons before it did.

Trinity's season was the height, and they should've worked on wrapping up the show the next season. Deb figured out who Dexter was a year too late, and found out in the most pathetic way possible. I really wanted her to intelligently figure out who Dexter was and have to deal with that issue while Dexter was none the wiser.

This last season was just very blah, and that's being nice. I felt like I was watching it just because I had to. Amazing, Dexter's son leaves with another "nanny." Not shocking considering he saw his kid a good 8 hours during the first six years of his life.

Before knowing anything about the season, I thought Dexter had to die, and probably die through Deb or a serial killer much like he was "passing the torch." Maybe Trinity's son. I can't remember if he died or not any more. I remember Dexter going back to find him, but can't remember if he killed him. This season seemed set up for that to happen with an almost "Who shot JR" feel to it. It seemed about five people could end up being the one to do it - Deb, Dr. Vogel, her son, the Dexter in training - but none of that happens and he stages his own death to be a logger. Just a really poor season, really poor last couple of seasons in my opinion.

And as the seasons go on, they take more and more and more and more liberties. And with everything pointing through the seasons that "Hey, maybe there's something wacko about Dexter" based on all the crap that happens surrounding him, he gets a total pass minus the cops that eventually were killed knowing his secret. This guy could do no wrong, knew how to find someone with a snap of a finger and could set up kill scenes in a second's notice - all the while holding a full time job and being a father. It got plain silly after time.

A case of a great show falling apart as the seasons continued.

I haven't read anything here, but will read it later.

Dexter is a prime example why it's better to end a series and leave people wanting more.

This last season spoiled the entire series. It's like watching a great movie and then the ending stinks. Imagine if at the end of "The Godfather" we find out that Michael Corleone is actually an alien from the planet Zoltar. That's kinda' how ridiculous Dexter ended up being.

That actually is the end of the godfather. Not many people know, but the original version included this reveal after the door shut.

Behind the door, Michael (Mikexau) peels off his skin suit to reveal his true identity. Turns out the zoltarians were responsible for World War II (hitler was one of the initial aliens to arrive). Mikexau killed the real Michael during the war and used the body to create his skin suit.

Kay was a human. But she does eventually find out and that's the reason they separated.

I did not mind it all that much. The show jumped the shark awhile ago. The first season was truly amazing. Kind of hard to follow up killing your brother who you didn't know you had who also happens to be a serial killer and figuring it all out in the first season. They should have saved that season.

The show was pretty much on a slow steady decline after that first season. The last season was no more or less 'bad' than season 2-7 IMO. Do not get me wrong there were some decent seasons in there, but I measured the show from the first season. Hard to follow that.

The biggest complaint the wife and I had about that last season was how Dexter was turning into a wuss. The REASON he was a great character is because he lacked empathy of any kind and he turned into this wuss who 'fell in love'. Gross.

I am actually glad they did not kill him off. The way they did it....well whatever. Someone said it above...I am glad it is over.

Very little thinking went into this show near the end.

I remember a couple seasons ago when Dexter was trying to sneak up on Almos at a church in the middle of the night.

He gets out of his car and closes the door-----like you normally would---unless you were trying to sneak up on somebody in the middle of the night. We see of shot of Almos being alerted by the car door slamming. Not even a "DOH!" look from Dexter, like he didn't mean to do it. Dexter just cruises right along as if he didn't just make a sound.

Clumsy writing.

Reading through this thread right now, I see I pretty much already agreed with everyone else. I guess there's nothing else to really add.

Too bad such a good show had to fall apart as bad as Dexter did the last three years.

I am glad they are bringing it back.  Maybe they can work in a way to explain some of the poor writing the past few seasons.  I will watch it.

Yes, maybe the first episode can be Dexter wrapping one of the writers in cellophone on a table in a garage. I'd watch that.
