The "I just don't get it" thread

Recommended Posts

I am not ripping people that like Bon Iver. But I am kind of ripping critics for acting like the guy is some kind of revelation.

I am ripping Jack Johnson fans, however. I mean, how much of him can you take. It seems like every song is in the same key, same tempo, same subject matter and all, really, really boring. How can you stand it? I kind of liked Dave Matthews Band at first. First time I saw them live I got bored because every song became a bloated 10 minute jam, and it was like "okay, I get it, you can play the guitar....." and then I kind of soured on them. Then I saw them at Rothbury back in 2008 and they put on a great show, limited the "jam" sessions and ripped through a fun set of popular stuff with some covers and new tunes worked it. I have not even heard one song from their latest album though.

Too many parents try to get their failures back through their kids. I don't mean that toward anyone here, but as a general observation. I have seen too many be pushed so hard, and so much expected of them, it turns them off. Some end up quitting, others stick it out and are miserable.

Another observation that sticks with me. Some who you think will never be any good - only need a chance.

Love the coaching stories. Good for all you guys.

I try to have the long view with ROMAD Jr. I want someone who understands the game so I can talk about it with him. If he doesn't love baseball, I've failed in my mission. Getting him to the point where he gets a scholarship or goes any further is just not going to happen, the kid is just not going to be Dustin Pedroia.

The unctuousness of parents who push Soccer over Baseball as a youth sport. "There is so much action in Soccer" compared to baseball is the thing you hear claimed about it. I can understand the need for these suburban parents who have ritalined their kids to stupification, to push this ghastly game on them to get them a proper cardio workout with all the running.

But, I ask these people: Which game has more scoring, Soccer or Baseball?

Preach!

This problem really plagues us in Southern Ontario, but assuming many other places in Canada as well. Baseball is still holding strong, but by no means thriving. In my area specifically, the major AAA does very well and develops lots of players, but the rest of the competitive programs are really struggling with enrollment, and fielding strong teams at every age group. It's getting to the point where there are 15-20 "AAA" calibre players at every age group from 8-15 years old, and than it really drops off. This was not the case 10-15 years ago when I was playing minor baseball. It's a shame.

I just don't get ...

Reality TV. It's all stupid. All.of.it.

Supposed news organizations that feel the need to spread celebrity gossip - or have "celebs" on the air to tell us what they think of anything.

People who piss & moan about people who don't measure up to their standards.

People who don't measure up to my standards.

Its funny to hear about the spreadsheets for coaches because I have done the same thing for U6 soccer. I wanted to try to even playing time out as much as possible and get different combinations of kids on the field, and with 9 kids on the team and 4 allowed on the field, it just seemed like a good tool to use (although I did in the back of my mind think that maybe I was too worried about splitting hairs). Never had an issue with parents regarding their kids' playing time or anything like that, but I did have a season where I had two brothers that could have used a bit more discipline, and mom was generally too buys with her phone to help me get my point across to them when I would send them off of the field.

So, back to the thread, and something that hasn't been mentioned.... tattoos. I don't get 'em.

There are some good ones that are actually art, but too many look like they were vandalized. Also, in think the folks that look lime they are wearing a NASCAR fire suit have too many.

Yes, and just to clarify, there is talent and creativity involved with some of them, and I can appreciate that.

I couldn't agree more w/ you about celebrities & anything about them. Don't care at all, don't see how its important.

Moneyball.... the movie. I got the book, read it twice, know all about Beane, etc... I'm speaking strictly for the movie. I didn't get it. Sorkin, Pitt... seemed a bit too heavy for the subject matter, with the dramatic music, etc. Then I'd see writers on twitter going back and forth treating it like some all time classic, swapping lines, etc. When we saw it at the theater I thought, "Hey, that was a nice fun movie..." I had no idea it would become a thing among certain people.

Star Wars.

I saw it on my 8th birthday and was bored stiff. And as I grew older, I had friends who were obsessed and I tried watching bits of the sequels here and there, but again... boring.

So the original gets re-released in the 90s, and I figure, Hey, I'm older now, and I appreciate many types of films, maybe I never gave it a real shot. I'll go in with a fresh mind and I'm sure I'll like it.

Nope. BORING.

perhaps, but the original made at a time when heroism was dead, made war movies cool again.

Any form of fighting as sport.

I'm going to file this under the: "I just don't get why I like it" heading.

Intellectually I don't understand "blood sports." To see two human face off and try to hurt each other... try to physically dominate and physically punish their opponent to the point where he or she can't stand or fight anymore... it seems to barbaric and stupid. I mean these athletes can get serious injured. More than that, the GOAL of the "game" is to seriously injury the other person. Granted, you can get seriously injured in other sports. Yet even in a sport like Football where aggressive contact is the norm, the goal isn't to seriously injury or seriously hurt the other guy. Yeah, you want to clean his clock, hit him hard enough that he thinks twice about running into you again... but ultimate you're not trying to abuse and wound him.

So I should dislike boxing or MMA. And yet I don't. Anytime I come across an MMA fight I'm hooked. I want to see the violence... I want to see a guy get hammered. There is something visceral in it for me. I just don't get why I like it... but I do.

I'm with you there. Now, I can appreciate that some of them are very artistic. I can appreciate that some of the pictures created are very beautiful to behold. But that doesn't mean I want to see if on a body.

Some radio personality said it once and I agree with it totally. I have NEVER seen a person with a tattoo and said: That makes them look more attractive. Certainly there are some who aren't negatively effective by a tattoo, but me personal... never seen someone who I thought looked better for the tattoo.

That's how I am with star trek and anything comic book related... even the new Batman trilogy. I watched them once and enjoyed them as movies. But I have a hard time keeping interested to watch again. I know it's just something I don't get.

for Star Wars it's pure nostalgia. I've tried to get into the non movie elements and didn't care enough to bother learning the planets and systems and characters... the new ones only interested me as it related to characters from 4-6.

The only times those things are 'un fun' is when they are not voluntary. Throwing some guy, who stole a pot to piss in, back in the 1500's to the lions with a butter knife to the applause of thousands in the stands is not voluntary.

MMA has come a long way. When it first came around and they threw 400lb men in the ring with some 5 foot 'mixed martial artist' basically with no ref in the ring was brutal. I had a hard time watching some of those early fights. Now with the ref stopping it pretty quick and everyone going into it weighing roughly the same and voluntarily I am alright with it.

The real question with this part of the discussion IMO is would you still have MMA type fight in backyards or in basements or in the woods etc etc if the people watching were not supporting the sport by buying t-shirts or viewing it on TV?

I think you would still have these types of fights so I do not feel guilty supporting two grown men deciding to try and prove who is stronger/a better fighter.

I was about 18 when that came out. This was before VCR's, cable tv, etc. OMG, the young man I was dating wanted to go to the theater and see that movie several times. I fell asleep in the middle of the movie every single time we saw it.

(Next boyfriend took me on more fun dates, like like minor league hockey back in the pre-helmet days. He's the one I married!)

The glorification of violence and denigration of nudity. It's OK to watch other people kill each other on TV, but seeing a woman naked is almost taboo, which makes little sense to me.

I don't get Star Wars either. I watched the movies, I enjoyed watching them - it entertained me for a couple of hours -- but the obsession to me is strange. I enjoyed Animal House as well, but I didn't start dressing like Bluto.

I've never gotten the obsession either. I still enjoy watching the original trilogy once a year, but I never felt the need to essentially treat it like a religion.
