Just How Long.......

This loss left a bad taste in my mouth, I see a July trade comin along.

I have to agree with you. The way the pen is right now there needs to be some sort of a deal.

He makes a bad bullpen even worse. Tigers relievers are 4-11 with 7 blown saves. Their ERA isn't to bad at 3.94 but it's not good either. The bullpen needs to be improved for the Tigers to remain a WS contender. We all know you usually don't win the WS with a bad pen.

The bad part is watching the Tigers battle their butts off for 3 1/2 hours just to see ONE player blow the entire game for them.

Max? Good job, but for nothing. Cabby? Nice 2 run shot but it's meaningless. These guys should be pissed that Leyland even has the option of using an old, washed up closer. Smyly could have gotten the save. Maybe even a couple of others too.

Do we have to keep watching Jose Valverde pitch for the Tigers?

This guy is like a bad rash, that you can't get rid of.

Pretty sad for a team that is put together as well as the Tigers are, for them to have this guy wearing a Tiger uniform.

I'll be surprised if they don't pick someone up between now and the deadline...too good of a shot at a title to leave it up to Valverde.

I mean line up & starting rotation, ya can't ask for much more for realz.

Statistical analysis doesn't always show what is really the problem. The bullpen is a much larger problem at this point. V-Mart's BABIP reflects how unlucky he has been. They need his bat to wake up, so benching him is a terrible idea.

The Tebow-Valverde comparison is perfect. Even in Tebow's stretch of wins for Denver, the results did not reflect his actual performance. His performance was very average or below, but he got pretty lucky. Same thing has been happy for Valverde. He is all smoke-and-mirrors so far.

If the Tigers want to win the World Series, they need to release Valverde & Don Kelly. Neither belong on a major league roster.

Far too much is being made of Victor's BABIP and unluckiness. If you put his career BABIP in place for GB, FB and LD, he'd look like Delmon Young from 2012 at this point. Not good. Not as bad as he is, but still not what VMart has been or should be if he's near 100%.

Welcome to the forum. Richmond is one of my favorite places. Many fond memories.

Thanks...Took me too long to get over here. Used to post for years on the WorldCrossing boards, and I see some familiar names here. I love it in Richmond too; lots of redevelopment happening here, which is nice to see.

Rondon's stuff is just electric. It just a matter of time before he takes on the role. The Tigers are obviously waiting for him to better command the zone, but when his curve ball is on and he uses it he's not likely to get hit regardless ...

I hope we see Rondon fairly soon. Would be nice to have him to at least pitch low leverage innings like in yesterday's game, saving Smyly for tighter spots. I feel like his last stage of development needs to happen at the big league level.

I can understand why Leyland uses Valverde as his closer because that is what the front office has given him, but I cannot understand why Valverde has not been instructed (ordered) to throw something other than fastballs 95% of the time???

And I cannot understand why there is not someone always throwing in the bullpen when Valverde is called on to close a game???

But what I really cannot understand is why Mr. Ilitich isn't in more control of his management team - making them accountable for decisions during the game and players used in the game. I am sick of seeing Don Kelly play practically every game when there are a number of potentially very talented options for the outfield. And why is Ramon Santiago still on the team? Surely one of the current outfielders must have had some infield experience and could be converted to play there on occasions. And why is Nick Castellanos being auditioned as an outfielder when I am pretty sure that he could be an infield option? Has Miguel Cabrera even played any outfield? Seems to me that despite his size (which is pretty trim now for him) he is an overall athlete an could be successfully utilized in the outfield on occasion.

My guess: in recent years Jose has had a lot of shoulder issues, and throwing a split can be very stressful on an aging arm.

Valverde was throwing his splitter on Friday night. Markakis crushed what I believe was a lame splitter and he immediately quit throwing it, per Dan and Jim...lost every nerve. At this level, you can't order a guy to throw one or two pitches all the time. For better or for worse, Valverde is in the big leagues and you have to take the whole package...the good and bad. This isn't little league or instructional league. They never should have brought the guy back.

If you've got someone throwing in the pen the entire time this guy is on the mound he shouldn't be on the team to begin with. Valverde is probably an emotional eggshell right now. I'm sure he has zero confidence after last years implosian and then the 3D flashback Friday night. Your last paragraph is not computing....Cabrera in the outfield???

Welcome!

No way you can have someone warming up every time Valverde pitches. What's the point of someone being the closer if the manager has no faith in them? Doesn't do them any damned good.

Sorry wolverinefan, are these players who make over a million dollars a year supposed to be molly-coddled and treated like management should have faith in them when they are sent out to do a job like closing a ball game and a good percentage of the time they scr~w things up?

Perhaps they could even 'relax' a bit more if they knew that if they are not up to the job, someone else is ready to step in and the manager could make a change before it gets outta hand. There are many times during the course of a ballgame when there are two relievers throwing in the pen at the same time.

Im not a fan of booing...go to tons of Tigers games every year and the only boos I give are to a bad umpire call. But i WILL be booing Valverde.

I don't think a player should ever be booed for trying his best and still not succeeding. I think a player should be booed only for lack of effort. Obviously, not many people agree with me on this.

Players still have emotions...

Regardless, he's either closer or he's not. Leyland isn't going to do a closer by committee with him on the team.

Yeah, I don't agree. If a player stinks and a fan is shelling out huge bucks to see him, they should be booed off the field. Valverde should be booed everytime he comes into a game.

So, the worthiness of a player to be booed is predicated on how much a fan is paying to go to the game? So, if I were to buy a million dollar ticket, I should be able to boo any batter that does not hit a 6 run home run, and any pitcher that doesn't get a 2 pitch strikeout, but if I get tickets for free, I should just shut up and and watch somebody else get shelled?

It's also important to note that you should make sure to boo when a player enters the game and before he even throws a pitch. That way he will know how you feel and will try extra hard to pitch well for you.

After a successful performance, you still need to boo because you still paid money, and you aren't going to let one good outing change the fact that you disapprove of him.

You can boo either way. Paying huge bucks just gives you more incentive is all. I am sure we could come up with a price to booing allotment ratio. If you pay $100 you can boo at any time. If you pay $20 you can only boo after the 7th inning.

I like going to little league games and booing the players. Much more satisfying to see them cry. The MLB players hardly show any emotion.

I only boo people who get the part in a play that I auditioned for. Especially if they are plumbers by trade.
