Castellanos and Garcia check-in

Recommended Posts

After a couple of torrid weeks that got us all exicted again about the short term for Castellanos, he has hit a bit of a rough patch, going 1 for his last 31.

On the other hand, Avisail Garcia has hit the ground running after his rehab, going 9 for his 1st 16 with the Hens - maybe the only knock being no XBH.

I have watched bits of a few games and the one thing that stood out for me w/ Castellanos was his arm. He definitely has a good one for LF.

5/9

Mudhens offense shows up with 12 runs tonight. Castellanos 3/4 with 2 doubles, Garcia 2/5. Still waiting for an XBH from Avisail.

5/11

Despite an 0/5 today, Castellanos now 7/23 after his mini-slump. Garcia breaks through the XBH barrier with a double and HR and is still hitting a blistering 429 since his return - which unfortunately is also his OBP. Take a pitch once in while kid.......

When you are hitting 429 I guess you cant. He's putting strikes in play and they're dropping in or going out.

Part of John Wagner's post-game write-up:

  • Another hitter who seems to be figuring some things out is OF Nick Castellanos. Castellanos has hit .375 in his last 10 games with a home run, 10 RBIs and 11 runs scored. In the first three games of this homestand he has gone 7-for-12 (.583) with his first Fifth Third Field home run of the season.

His recent at-bats have been very strong, full of solid contact -- his two hits today were a solid single up the middle and a line drive off the pitcher, followed by a groundout and flyball to medium depth right. Here's the best news, though: Castellanos has struck out just three times in his last 29 at-bats (a span of eight games), or one strikeout every 9.7 at-bats. Before that the 21-year-old had struck out 33 times in 34 games, or 179 at-bats (one strikeout every 5.4 at-bats).

Was at the Pawsox/Mudhens game in Pawtucket today. Castellanos, Lennerton, Guez, and Avila all homered. Pat Misch pitched allight, and Mike Cervanek played a great 3B Fwiw. Happy boy here.

Since both are at back at Toledo again and the Castellanos thread in the big club forum has meandered off into who knows where..... we'll bump this thread.

7/14 update: Nick in another little funk with O-fers in 4 of his last 5 games. Garcia still doing a nice job of making the International League look too small to hold him by maintaining a 1.061 OPS.

And those trends continued today.

I noticed that Valverde is not on the Hens roster anymore. Typo? Or is he gone?

I read he is on the restricted list while he attends to a personal matter.

At this point you'd think Avi would at least be picking up IBB's!

Both Avi and Nick hit game winning 3 run homers in yesterday's DH sweep. Sweet.

Coming into Thursday's game with Scranton, Garcia was riding a 9 game hitting streak. However, despite the baseball gods doing absolutely everything in their power to help him keep his streak alive by gving him 9 AB in a 20 inning game, our boy steadfastly refused to extend his streak.

Castellanos could only manage an 0 for 8!

And needless to say with their hot bats going 0/17, the Hens lost the game 2/1.

when/if these guys make the Tigers it will be a good them for them that there is no MLB team in Scranton.

Avi with homer and two BB's last night. His BB's have suddenly picked up. Avg is back to .390 on a not so small 170 PA's. OPS over 1000. Impressive!

Casti had 3 hits also. OPS still under 800.
