Memorable plays at the plate in Tiger history

Recommended Posts

Last night's play has me trying to think of some other games that were decided like this in the past. Right off hand, I can't think of any (minus one), although I know there must be some - good and bad.

Obviously, Game #5 of the 1968 World Series comes to mind.

What other ones do people remember? It would be cool to see some people jar my memory a bit.

Absolutely none come to mind besides the 1968 series play. Freehan and Parrish were pretty big boys and I would guess many base runners avoided any contact with these two.

I remember listening to this game while cleaning my room on an overcast and crummy June 14, 1983. The play at the plate occurred in the 6th inning. Very memorable because of how it happened. Per the description from Ernie and Paul, Gibby was right on Whitaker's tail by the time they rounded 3rd. Whitaker was tagged out, spun Gedman around a bit, and Gibson knocked the ball loose from Gedman's glove when he reached the plate a second later.

Don't forget that time when Bill Freehan was beating his meat at the plate.

Weird things happen on those west coast trips.

Didn't Rodney throw a wild pitch with a runner on 3rd once and then get the guy at the plate? I was thinking it was the Tampa game where he chucked the ball into the stands, but that wasn't it.

I remember watching on TV i think Higginson running over a New York Yankees catcher in a extra ining game for the win in the early 2000's. He hit him hard enough to jar the ball lose. Higginson didn't touch the plate after the collision and i think Fick was pointing frantically at the plate telling higgy to touch the plate before the catcher found the ball. He was called safe right before the catcher tagged him resulting in a tigers win. My brother and i were so excited that we woke everybody up in the house because we are jumping up and down so hard every thing was shaking. The tigers sucked than and I'm sure the game didn't mean much but we were excited about it.

I was at this one. It took forever to score the play. The scorer ended up giving an error to Gedman. It was the only thing he could do. Gibson also ran into Larry Barnett who apparently didn't hear him coming down from third. Larry got injured on the play and had to leave the game.
