Climate change

Recommended Posts

I'm surprised there isn't an active thread discussing what is the one uniting issue the peoples of Earth should be talking about -- climate change. The scientific evidence supporting climate change is overwhelming, and it is a consensus among scientists that it is caused by the carbon dioxide create by man by the burning of fossil fuels. If we don't do something soon collectively as a planet, we face temperatures increasing to the point where life as we know it will be severely impacted -- and much of life as we know it destroyed.

I'd like to hear from those who are still skeptic about climate change. Why are you skeptic? Does your religion have beliefs that state God will take care of any problems caused by climate change? Do you feel scientists are trying to advance some kind of agenda? I am not trying to sound critical -- I am truly curious.

This has always baffled me as well. It is right up there with evolution in my mind. I don't know the answers to your question; I am responded mostly to stay subscribed to the thread to see the responses. :)

I was actually thinking about this the other day. As much as I support the President's push for gun control legislation, I wonder if it would have been wiser for him to use up that much political capital on climate change instead (like how he used so much capital on health care during his first term). Climate change will in all likelihood kill many, many more humans than assault weapons will.

I was just talking with my dad about climate change yesterday. The earth has been here for millions of years. We have been here less than a million years and have been keeping data on actual temperatures even less.

I am wondering how these climate change people can know what is normal for the earth in terms of cycles. What if what we are going through is normal? What if every 10,000 years or so the earth has this kind of change and the cycle rinses and repeats?

The "scientists" all want us to organize ourselves in collective agriculture

The "scientists" all wanted us to go for the metric system too.

What's wrong with the metric system? We are the only backward country that doesn't use it, and even here, I use it each and everyday. Chances are, many items in your home were designed in millimeters, not inches.

Am I correct in ascertaining that you reject climate change on religious grounds?

Never before in the 4.5 billion history of the Earth has the climate been subject to the kind of impact that our species has had on it. The Earth has had periods of heating and cooling that was caused by natural events, but this is the first that is directly impacted by the amount of carbon human activity produces.

How in the sam hell do you know that and present it as fact? And for the record I am NOT religious.

You know what do not answer that. I reject your ideas as ludicrous and will just use whatever you type up in response to mock the idea. I have done plenty of research on the subject so nothing you will say will change my belief that 'climate change' is something Al Gore made a pretty good living about. Fear mongering.

I curse the metric system every time I am in my garage looking for a 3/4 inch ratchet!

19mm

.75 * 25.4 = 19.05

1mm = .03937 in

Simple math, something this country needs a good dose of.

Tell me that after 8 beers! (My math is not that bad!)

The idea that there is man-made climate change, aka global warming, and that it is dangerous to life on this planet is settled. No reputable scientist can successfully call this into serious dispute. What is not settled is the detail about just how harmful it is.

And do you think he has paid off the scientific community to agree with him? What are your qualifications to analyze said data?

There's no doubt Al Gore made some good coin off the global warming issue. That is not de facto evidence that global warming is bunk.

Why does anyone even care about what Gore has said on the subject. The science is fairly clear. The fact that a layperson doesn't understand it does not refute good science.

To many on the right, climate change is Al Gore, thus they automatically dismiss his message, which rings true and affects us all regardless of party affiliation. It is a very sad state of affairs that the future and fate of our planet has turned into a polarizing political issue.
