2013-2014 Red Wings Roster Moves, Injuries, Whatever Thread

Recommended Posts

At this point, I'm no longer comfortable parting with a Nyquist, Tatar, Jarnkrok, etc. for a Marian Gaborik or Latislav Smid caliber of player. I'd rather the Wings stand pat, keep all of their prospects and make moves in the off-season. I just don't see this team as one guy away from being a Cup contender and I don't want to make the amount of trades necessary, 2-3, to make this aging team a contender.

If moving Nyquist was part of a package that could land someone like Tomas Vanek, I would not have a problem with it. I think Nyquist is talented but the Wings won't commit to him and it just seems like they will be yo-yo'ing him. Why not use him as part of a package to get a proven player that can help the scoring right now.

The Wings traded Kent Huskins to the Flyers today for a conditional 7th round pick. Thanks to Huskins - I thought he was a nice fill-in early in the season when the Wings really needed him.

Because just adding Vanek won't get this team past some of the other top teams in the West and to get Vanek you're not just giving up Nyquist as far as prospects go. To bring Vanek in you're probably looking at Nyquist, plus one of Jurco/Jarnrok/Pulkkinen/Frk/Sproull/Olluett and a couple of draft picks. Giving up all that to bring in one superstar on a team with aging superstars and one, our top guy, whose bolting for Russia in a year doesn't make sense to me. It worked before the salary cap and would work better if our two superstars weren't 34 and 32 respectively. I'd rather keep a large core of youth and build around that going forward via free agency.

Last season, I would have been all in for the idea of making some additions, Vanek included. Last season there were a plethora of guys I wanted at the deadline. However, looking at how pathetic this team was versus Nashville in the playoffs, a team that can't score to save their lives, has changed my evaluation of this team. Add that in with no major, meaningful free agent signings during the off-season.

Ansar Khan ‏@AnsarKhanMLive 3m

Zetterberg said tests on his injured groin (happened in Thursday's game) showed "something" and he remains day to day.

Babcock sort of hinted at possibility of DeKeyser playing Thursday but also said with Quincey and Lashoff due back that he'll have options.

I see a lot of posts get made at the end of game threads for in between game news, but not everybody looks back at those threads so I figured I'd make this thread. I know the Wings section isn't very popular, but I figure some people will get use out of seeing this so even if it is just me posting over and over I'll update this thread whenever I can.

As I posted in the last game thread, Patrick Eaves is injured, but does not have a fractured jaw. It's just sore and he's day to day, Ken Holland said.

Probably leads to:

Red Wings also signed some goalie depth the other day, probably doesn't mean much in the scheme of things:

I never saw an official announcement of this signing...did it go through ?

Ryan Sproul (@Sproully93) tweeted at 7:43 PM on Tue, Apr 02, 2013:

Headed to Abbotsford tomorrow to join the Grand Rapids Griffins for the rest of the year

Hey, the Griffins are in town? Maybe I should drive out and check them out. Easy 1 hour from d/t Vancouver.

No trades for the Red Wings - The Macomb Daily

I'm not participating in the trade deadline thread for various reasons, but there is some injury stuff in there as well:

Forwards Henrik Zetterberg (groin) and Mikael Samuelsson (upper body) are still listed as day-to-day according to Holland.

“We’re being conservative with Z,” Holland said. “But at the same time we’re in a playoff hunt. Sammy is very sore,” Holland added. “He skated on his own (Tuesday) but he doesn’t have full range of motion. He felt good so that’s a positive step.”

Holland said there’s a chance Zetterberg could play Thursday. Samuelsson, who just returned from a broken left index finger, is “on the horizon” according to Holland.

Forward Todd Bertuzzi (back) continues to progress and there’s a chance he could return in a couple weeks.

“Bert is feeling very good,” Holland said.

Darren Helm (back) saw another back specialist two days ago and it still looks like he’s heading in the right direction.

“We’ll start pushing it and see how it responds,” Holland said.

According to Twitter everybody except Helm is practicing today. I wish Helm would come back, a line of him, Nyquist, and Brunner would be awesome.

edit: apparently Brunner wasn't out there after all, and is day to day with some mysterious injury. Bertuzzi is at least two days away from returning. Helm is trying to push his skating to test his back.

Sproul's offensive game really grew this season. Still needs a bunch of work in his own end, but very interesting prospect.

So the BJ's get Gaborik, the Wild get Pomminville, and the Wings get nothing. Yeah, yeah, I know Kenny, we like our team, getting Helm and Bert back will be like getting a deadline acquisition. Other than Dallas, everyone in our conference seemed to get better and the Wings didn't do a dang thing.

I'm fine with the Wings standing pat, to be honest, and I would rather they had been sellers than buyers. They aren't contending for a Cup this year, and they need new blood. The last thing they need to be doing is trading picks for old guys who might get you to the 2nd round at best.

I'd be fine with the Wings standing pat if we were playing all the young guys on a regular basis. But having most of these guys rot in Grand Rapids while Cleary is on the PP and Samuelsson is raking in millions with a NTC, that's what I have the problem with. Would we be favorites to win the Cup if we got Gaborik? Not likely, but draft picks and prospects are a crap shoot.

The only player moved today that would've interested me as a wings fan is Pominville. And seeing what Minnesota gave up...no thanks.

Scottish Caveman:

Winging It In Motown ‏@wingingitmotown 4m

Wings did end up signing Coreau today. Just not covered because it's been a technicality for more than a week now.

With what the teams gave up for the players at the deadline today I'm more than glad that the Wings did not make those moves. I know a lot of people here won't like that and I'm probably in the minority, but I think it is smart for the team's future. I also don't think the roster they currently have is out of the Stanley Cup question so maybe I'm crazy. My only reservation sort of is not trading Filpulla if he really wants the contract demands that have been floating around. I don't know if someone will give it to him, but there's a chance he leaves for nothing. But at the same time I don't think they're out of it, so trading Filpulla wouldn't be great for the playoffs this year. Although saying that I'm sure the Wings will probably get eliminated in the first round and everyone will want Holland fired as the worst GM of all time.

If he really wants over $5 million a year then I don't think the Wings will give it to him, just my thinking.

Well, I'm also of the belief that Franzen gets bought out and Datsyuk is going home once his contract is done (and the Wings know this). They are going to need an established scorer and will pay for it, IMO.

The problem is is that Filppula isn't an established scorer, he's only scored 20 goals/40+ points once in his career. Franzen is a much more established of a scorer with a team friendly contract. I think Franzen gets more gruff than he should with Detroit fans, especially this year where I've noticed him definitely working hard in the defensive side of things as well as playmaking (has the same amount of assists that Filpulla does points and they've played the same number of games, also scored more goals than Flip).

I don't feel that Franzen's contract is team friendly at all. 7 more years at a shade under 4M for a 33 year old who tops out in the mid 50 point range is a terrible contract, IMO. (it's the length that is the issue, not the money) The Red Wings would be best served to use one of their amnesty buyouts before they are on the hook for the rest of it.
