Connecticut Elementary School Shooting

Recommended Posts

Perhaps. However, gun control tends to keep only the law-abiding populace disarmed. I don't know where this ******* got his gun, or if it were obtained legally, or how motivated he actually was.

You might be right, you might be wrong. It seems too soon to politicize this tragedy. That perhaps should have been my response to Euphdude, but I tend to rely too strongly on clever subtlety, irony, and sarcasm.

I'm not trying to politicize this issue too quickly or be insensitive, however since the MI lame duck GOP congress is trying to pass legislature ASAP that will legalize concealed weapons in public schools, I figured what better time than now to bring it to the lime light.

I will face questions from my 1st and 2nd grade daughters about this tragedy, so I am fully aware of the sensitivity of the issue.

As for arming teachers and school personnel with guns, to me that's a "fight fire with fire" approach that will lead to more tragedy.

I don't know. Nineteen children in a daycare in Oklahoma City died in the spring of 1995. There was security, metal detectors at the doors, etc. of the federal building. But a soulless individual was able to put together a massive bomb with common materials.

The twin towers were brought down with a boxcutter.

Evil tends to be very resourceful.

If making the guns illegal would have prevented this, why don't they make gunning down schoolchildren illegal? Seems more direct.

They did make gunning down school children illegal

If someone is so concerned about not "politicizing" this, why are they posting on the Internet in a political discussions forum? If you don't want to politicize it, then go talk somewhere and not talk about it. The Internet is not a place to "not politicize" anything.

Be honest, it wouldn't matter to you where he bought the gun. You think he has the right to own a gun. Nothing wrong with that opinion even though I disagree with it. But WHERE he got it really doesn't matter to you in the big picture, does it?

dude I wish you posted in this forum more again

should his bomb have been legal? A bomb is an arm, and the Constitution says you have a right to bear arms.

It's a stretch to compare 9/11 and OKC to a mass shooting a school, frankly. Furthermore, arguing that the OKC bombers didn't use a gun when the weapon they used is 100 times more lethal doesn't exactly help your argument.

You're right. I guess if you wanted to really stretch the intent of the 2nd amendment, we should all be allowed to own nuclear and chemical weapons for when the government decides it's going to declare war on its citizens.

because it'll do no good... just to give us a false sense of safety.... kind of like airport security. i'd be all for new gun laws

It's getting to be a mess with the social media. First, the facebook account and picture of a Ryan Lanza shown on some news stations was apparently the wrong guy. He has posted recently saying it is not him. Now the twitter account that everyone is saying was the shooter just posted saying it is not him either.

Either there is something crazy going on with these accounts, or more likely the media jumped the gun once again and is putting innocent people on the news pictured as a murderer. The media really needs to be accountable for doing this crap.

I don't think airport security just gives a false sense of safety, nor do I think gun control laws will do no good.

I think everyone being armed would give a false sense of safety and do little good

when I'm in the presence of a gun, I don't feel safer at all

Thank you... it's like the *******es who thought that the Aurora shootings would have been better had everyone been packing that day. More people carrying guns isn't the answer... before you know it, you've got the OK Corral going on.

That bomb WAS illegal. And that fact didn't save a single child. The raw materials were not, and the murderer didn't care about the law.

But I'm pretty sure you missed my point. I was responding to the suggestion about metal detectors at all entrances of elementary schools. The OKC Federal Building did have metal detectors. In September 2001, you had to pass through a metal detector to board an aircraft.

You misspelled "the NRA's opinion" as "s-t-r-e-t-c-h".

Regardless of the investigations, fact and suppositions, they will not matter to the families and friends affected in Ct. this morning. Their children are forever gone. The tearing will never heal. May they comfort each other and find strength to somehow cope with the future.

I think I'd mostly feel safer if I was the one holding the gun.

But I do agree. It will not make elementary school children safer if their teachers are armed. I don't think that children are less safe at school today than they were last week.

Right - I know it was. I was asking should it have been. If so, why? Isn't he allowed to bare that weapon under the 2nd Amendment?

I think parents in CT would be much happier right now if this man had box cutters instead of guns.

The media has to cover this, I know......but they are vultures.

Almost feels like some of them are rooting for the number to be higher.

Use the same security methods we use to get on a airplane. Put them in every doorway in every school in America. Make it mandatory. Along with that, put a police officer in every school as well.

The right-wing tends to want the federal government out of education, they'd oppose.

What do you guys that want more gun control want to do? I know you want to ban guns but what about the millions of guns out there already? Do you confiscate them? What do you do about the ensuing black market for firearms that will be sure to show it face? What about the ability now for anyone with a cnc mill and lathe that would be able to pump out illegal guns fairly easily? Every popular firearm in the country already has a cad file produced and dowloadable on the internet.

So we shouldn't have stricter gun laws because the perps will just find another way to inflict evil? Is that what I'm reading?

Let me ask this: If stricter gun laws prevented just one of these incidents this year, wouldn't that be a positive?
