This is the Lions, a Ford production. Nobody is going ANYWHERE until 3-5 seasons after fans want them gone.

Nobody is going anywhere right now.

I think that is probably true.

I am not against keeping the ship, I really like Linehan as a playcaller and I like the loyalty Gunther has with players.

I just think that Ault is a tremendous offensive talent though. Perhaps if Sarkisian ends up in the NFL, Linehan goes to Washington and Ault becomes an option.

Win-win-win.

yes the Lions played like crap , but they also lost most of the offense to injure thats why i think Schwartz gets atleast another year with the knowledge that the owner wants more discipline from this team on and off field.

The best thing for this team would be to not overreact to a terrible season. Patience and continuity in this league is rare and their value is too often overlooked.

Between Schwartz and Mayhew' date=' I would much rather keep Schwartz. The team overperformed its talent in 2009 and 2010 and were a dangerous playoff team last year. This year has gone poorly, but that happens sometimes.

Mayhew has made some bad decisions (Pettigrew, Williams, Young), but the strategy of this team is absolutely correct. No one bats 1.000 in talent evaluation - I can give you a list of draft mistakes made by Ozzy Newsome that compares favorably to Mayhew. The biggest thing you need in a GM is one with good vision, direction and a willingness to utilize all of the tools in his disposal to make this roster better. Mayhew has demonstrated this.

Since day the goal of this team was two fold: load the field with weapons around Calvin Johnson and to create a defensive line that can get pressure with four guys. The talent has been their on the defensive line, but the execution has often let much to be desired. For this reason the biggest target should be reuniting Schwartz with Jim Washburn. I think that will do more for the defense than adding any other individual player. Let Avril leave, let KVB go if cap possible and resign Lo-Jack and Sammie Hill and then add another talent in the draft. We will be fine here.

Much more concerning is the huge misses we have had on the offensive side. Getting Broyles back will help, but we need to pick up another playmaker or two for next year. My top target would be Travon Austin from WVU, but I think that would probably require some serious draft maneuvering and unfortunately the QB talent probably prevents the best opportunities for large moves.[/quote']

Norman, for the last three seasons you've predicted that the Lions would win 13 games each year (give or take).

I believe you are overrating the talent level on the Lions as well as the "plan" Mayhew has for this team.

I'm not versed enough in the in's and out's of the NFL to know, but I have been watching football long enough to know when a coach doesn't have it. And Schwartz doesn't have it.

They were lucky to be in the playoffs last year (+14 turnover ratio?). Do you remember that Minnesota game? If Cutler doesn't get hurt, the Lions miss the playoffs for the same reason that they imploded this season: no discipline.

I think someone else can do better, I don't know who it is. But just because I don't know who that is doesn't mean that person isn't out there.

The Lions were in a ton of games until the last drive or so almost every game this year. Last year those went their way, this year not. Even bet it flips back their way next year, might as well stay the course.

Wonder how many Lions fans have said this since 1957?

Yep...and I would add to this that the Lions could win 10 games again next season and it would not change a thing about Schwartz. He just does not have it. I guess there is a chance he could humble himself and completely change who he is at a coach but that is very unlikely. I think the thing that gets me the most is every time I hear Schwartz interviewed, he makes it sound like the Lions are close but the bounces just are not going their way. What he doesn't understand is that every NFL team is close. It is about doing the little things and having discipline like you say.

Chicago 26, Detroit 24: Lions end season with eighth straight loss, 4-12 record | Detroit Lions | Detroit Free Press | freep.com

ESPN reported early Sunday that the Ford family will review head coach Jim Schwartz’s job status, which has long been thought to be safe, after the season, and CBS Sports reported that the Lions could possibly change general managers.

The Lions declined comment about the ESPN report before the game, and general manager Martin Mayhew said he’d talk to reporters on Wednesday.

If Schwartz is fired, but Mayhew is not - it would be pointless.

It really should be both. I don't think either is going anywhere, but if one goes, both should go.

Jim Schwartz's status under review by Detroit Lions, sources say - ESPN

League sources say that the issues that have troubled owner William Clay Ford and his son, vice chairman Bill Ford Jr., pertain to the team's image and the coach's management style.
Nevertheless, league sources say that even during the playoff season, the Fords were disturbed by a number of incidents that fell under Schwartz's domain. Schwartz's occasional gruff management personality also has come under scrutiny and will be addressed by ownership if Schwartz is back in 2013.

Schwartz is the biggest ****ing idiot in the NFL. Ive hated him since the day He was hired. He is a terrible coach. He's hot headed, cocky for no reason, arrogant and completely lacks what it takes to be a head coach. God I hate him.

This team quit this season the second they got off the place from Jacksonville.

Next year:

Stafford is fine - he will be a fantastic QB with the right coaching.

OLine sucks but not terruble sucks.

RB - Meh who cares they are all the same - there's AP and 32 other RBs

WRS - Calvin and some garbage is good enough

TE - sign someone with scheffler - Pettacrap has to go

DL - Suh was actually awesome the 2nd 1/2 of the season - Farley played well.

DE - Avril - see ya, KVB See ya, Jackson and the other guy are good enough

LBers - Tullock is ok the other guys are crap

2ndary - they are all terrible. Delmas especially - he makes 1 good play for 5 bad ones

Houston is pretty good need to keep him

Ill still watch every second of every game next year like I have for the past 30 years and I'll probably still get upset but whatever

I agree. Since his rookie season Suh's production has dropped drastically. Could also be other teams watch tape and know how to contain him. I would really like to see Mayhew and Schwartz gone and have us hire someone with past success. However I have 0 faith that the Ford's will get a clue now.

Suh just had his best year, lets stop judging DTs on sacks. He'd have been a DPOY candidate if we were decent team. He ranked as the 4th best DT in football this year on PFF, after finishing 24th and 33rd the 2 previous years. Fairley was 5th at DT fwiw.

The only reason our DL isn't looked at higher is because of our back 7. Its very similar to the Giants last year early on, or this year all year. Its easy to stop a DL from killing you if your LBs and DBs can't make plays.

Also, this team has its holes, but I don't get how our OL takes so much heat. I think you'd be hard pressed to find 10 better OLs.

Suh was good this year, but very inconsistent. He's developed a reputation as someone who tries when he wants to try. When he DOES try, he's excellent, but he doesn't try every time out.

He's still very good. I thought he was much better this year than he was last year.

As others have said, the problem is at DE. I wonder why they don't move Suh to DE for some plays?

I'm all for giving Schwartz one more year, but if they fired him I would totally understand. The Lions are about to lose their eighth straight game. How many coaches lose eight straight games and get brought back? Only Lions coaches...

Seriously? I know people are frustrated with this team, but Suh's effort, really? I'm blown away by this comment. I have never heard anyone suggest this, let alone enough people to say he has developed a reputation. WTF?

Were Jeff Fischer's teams in Tennessee this undisciplined and/or under-prepared for the start of a football game?

IIRC, they had similar issues with penalties and they also drafted a lot of bad character guys like Haynesworth and Pacman.

It really should be both. I don't think either is going anywhere, but if one goes, both should go.

Mayhew has not underperformed at near the level of Schwartz. I'd love to see Schwartz go at this point, but I don't think it will happen due to the money. I'll ask again, has any team ever eaten an entire contract before it started?

Great post. People need to quit listening to the media and get off Suh's jock. It's ridiculous the heat the guy has taken the past two seasons. The back 7 was awful this year, hell it's always been awful. The DL is the least of the Lions problems right now. They can let Avril Walk, cut Vandenbosch, and still be okay at DE.
