Is Suh a dirty player?

Recommended Posts

I'd like to look at Suh and his career as a whole outside of the just the latest incident and ask the question: Do you believe that Suh is a dirty player? Not trying to say whether this means he should or shouldn't be on the team, just asking in general: Is he dirty?

There's no question he's has some real instances of being too aggressive and going way beyond the limit. The stomp last year and a perfect example. There are also instances where he's been too rough with QBs. I think both of those were preseason games where he clearly went too far.

But I think there are also instances were Suh is getting a called out for something that WASN'T illegal or even really bad. The perfect example would be the non-forearm shiver to Cutler. Wasn't a forearm, wasn't to the head, shouldn't have been a penalty (though I excuse the refs cause it was REALLY hard to tell that in real time), definitely shouldn't have been a fine. Yet Suh was fined and it's often brought up as an example of Suh being dirty despite CLEAR video evidence that it wasn't a dirty play.

So what do you think? Are the (at least three) example of legit "dirty play" enough evidence that Suh is dirty and that we're probably seeing only the worst stuff? Or have those three legit "dirty plays" painted Suh in a negative light such that he won't get a fair hearing on anything that looks even possibly questionable anymore?

Jack Lambert and the 70's Oakland Raiders defense sneers at the suggestion. Suh is an aggressive player.

Idiots like Bill Huge Simonson think Suh is a dirty player. And that's just another reason why he is an idiot.

To a point, yes he is. I think he's kind of a bully. He expects to physically overwhelm you, but if that doesn't happen, there seem to be triggers within him that can't cope, and he's likely to do something beyond the norm to get some sort of point across.

The players that play against him think it. I'm sure some of that is media-induced. However, a good chunk of those people that voted probably have played against him as well, so I think there's merit to their claims.

Yep, one of the dirtiest players in the league. He seems to want to play by his own rules regardless of how it affects the team. Anybody who says that he's not dirty is a flaming homer.

The results speak for themselves as well as his peers labelling him as the dirtiest player in the league for 2 straight years. Call it "Playing Hard or "Playing Aggressive" or that he's "Old School" but the fact remains that you can't play now the way they played in the '70s, those times have long passed so guys like Suh and James Harrison need to learn to tone it down because committing personal foul penalties and getting suspended does nothing but hurt the team plus it forces the NFL to keep an even closer eye on him as he gains a reputation as a guy who crosses the line.

He has made a lot of dirty plays but I have not seen anything this year that suggests he is dirty. There is no way to know for sure if the kick to Schuab was intentional, but I understand people having questions due to what he has done.

I think Suh is plays dirtier than your average player but I think a lot of his so called "dirtiness" is just aggressiveness used in ways that other players don't have the ability too. His takedown of Cutler is a good example. Suh was trying to get him down the quickest and easiest way possible. The result was a nasty takedown, but legal. Most players would not even have the ability to do what he did on that play so when Suh does it, it gets labeled dirty because people are not used to it.

I think Suh is almost more of a head case than dirty. His off the field issues point to this. And stomping on that lineman was after the whistle and just a dumb thing mentally to do. To some extent, it does go hand in hand with playing dirty but I think the "dirty" adjective is over used with Suh.

I don't think he's dirty at all. The stomp wasn't near as bad as he looked and that's the only thing he's done that I have a problem with. The Cutler hits were all legit, the kick in the nuts is so laughable even Goodell couldn't suspend him for it, and we know he'd love to. He's ridiculously strong and ridiculously aggressive and sometimes when he manhandles people, it looks pretty bad because he throws them around like ragdolls.

To be honest though, I don't care that much(to a point). I have kind of embraced rooting for him as the bad guy. I like that our team and our best defensive player are so hated. F it

He's more mean than dirty. I never get the sense that he is trying to injure someone, but he clearly plays angry.

Suh is extremely dirty and he's a neon sign for refs. But this is football, we market these guys to knock each other around, we play up the tough angle and then penalize people for being aggressive, but Suh is dirty and he's not as smart as I thought he was. Tired of his schtick. I think the Lions need to consider trading him if they can (hopefully to the AFC). Having Stafford, Johnson and Suh and those contracts is going to cripple the team. One of them has to go, I would say it's Suh because you still have Fairley.

Tired of what? He has a whopping 3 offsides penalties over the last 16 games and 0 personal fouls or suspensions. Tired of him being a good defensive lineman? I guess? He is a bad driver apparently, so there's that.

For those who've called him dirty, what do you point to that as the proof or foundation of this idea that he's dirty?

Can we merge all the Suh threads? There is no need for 3 to be going right now.

As for Suh, of course he is dirty. Every lineman who plays football is dirty in there own way. Suh is just makes it too obvious and does it on national TV.

But I still want him on the team, he is a good DT.

I'd rather not right now... they discuss three different topics and so far have stayed nicely on topic. If things stray and the conversation get muddled I'm merge or close various threads.

Everyone keeps saying this, but I highly doubt it actually happens. I think our cap will keep all 3 just fine. It has this far and we are only going to add cheaper talent at this point, not more expensive talent.

Completely agree with this. And now it's gotten to where people are just looking for dirty plays. You put just about any lineman under the microscope Suh is under and you're going to find issues.

I think he lets frustration get the better of him. Being double teamed all the time and being held without penalties being called makes him lose his cool. A sign of immaturity.
