Am I a fair weather fan ?

Recommended Posts

i have been a moron on this board since 1999. I don't post as much as i used to, but, i have a dilema.

i lost alot of faith in the Tigers when they got swept by the Royals back in july. i have had a hard time really getting

excited about this team since. i have been a FAN since the '72 season.

i feel guilty getting excited about them now that they have a chance for the post season. i am not the greatest fan, but,

i live and die by these guys. i guess i need to hear someone tell me i'm a fair weather fan, or i have the ok to root again for my team.

Who cares what anyone else says. Who cares if you sometimes root for them and sometimes get pissed off and give up. The whole point is to have fun, so when you are having fun with the team root your *** off and when they are ruining your day check out until they are fun again. In the end, that's all that matters - be a fan who roots for a team that is fun to watch. :)

You are fine. We all go through higher and lower intensity levels for our teams. I struggled watching games during the summer as well. Just because you are a fan of a team doesn't mean what they are doing, how they are performing or whatever else you may want to throw in there is always going to wow you. It doesn't take being a "blind" fan to be a true fan. But as long as they remain your team, they are your team.

I certainly don't take the games as intense as I did 20 years ago, or 10 years ago or even four years ago. But I don't look at myself being any less of a fan. For example, 10 years ago I recorded every game to make sure I saw every game. I lived and died with just about every pitch. Now, I'll go out and play volleyball and whatever is left of the game when I get back home, that's fine - I'll watch that portion. If it was that great, I can watch the abbreviated replay to see what I missed. Now that I'm older I find it more important that I compete when I want to and the Tigers are now secondary to that need to compete myself. After all, I'm 43. I don't know how long I'll be able to, so their level on my priority list has gone down a slight bit.

But all that said, I don't think I'm less of a fan. When I die, no one is going to mistaken me for not being a Detroit sports fan. Just as you grow and age, things change. Who knows, in five years I might be as intense into the Tigers as I was when I was 12 years old. Being a fan is a journey, just like anything else in life. And like someone said, be glad that life is good enough that this can be a reasonable concern.

It is tough, because I feel the Tigers will once again back into the playoffs. I'm not that excited because I think this team has underachieved and have lucked out because of the terrible division they play in.

If the tigers win the world series, I am going to be pissed that there isn't dynasty talk because the Tigers were merely decent in the regular season!

When you get as close to a team as we do here, the ups and downs are magnified and you live on a sort of bi-polar rollercoaster. Sure, you're a real fan. A fair weather fan wouldn't care enough to feel genuinely disgusted.

Anyone who was a member of this community from when it was the official Tigers site cannot ever ever ever be accused of being a fair weather fan.

By the way, I gave up on the team for a while, and I am still gun shy in a way, but I never stopped posting game threads. I am a real fan but I am surely culpable to deep dismay.

Lord knows that is very true.

You may not be a fair weather fan, but it's pretty funny that you lost a lot of faith in a team that got swept in July. All teams get swept, man, and all teams lose to bad teams.

This attitude puzzles me to the core. In 2006 people were convinced they'd get swept by the Yankees, and they ended up going all the way to the World Series, which I'm convinced they would have won if they didn't have nearly two weeks off.

Last year people thought the same thing, that the Yankees are just too good, and they make it to the ALCS.

Guys, the playoffs are different. Anything can happen. All pretense is dropped once the first pitch is thrown.

I can't think of any time the Tigers have ever backed into the playoffs. 1945, won it on last day of regular season with a victory. 1968, won AL pennant by a healthy margin without a playoff format. 1984, wire to wire. 1987, swept the Jays the final weekend to win the AL East with the best record in baseball, 2006, had the best record in baseball the day they clinched a playoff spot, 2011 won the Central by 15 games with 95 wins. Even this year, I don't think say a 88-win season is stellar, but there have been many division winners in that range over the years and the Tigers are currently on a 7-3 run.

I'm sorry, but "back in"? I just realized I didn't see that. They're 7-3 in their last 10, in the most important part of the season. "back in"??

I've had a lot of trouble with this team as well. I still don't think they've been particularly good this season, but good enough to get in the playoffs I suppose. The fact they almost got passed by a really bad Sox team sort of bums me out still. I am just posted here because I had nearly the same thought yesterday when thinking about the team. I found myself watching the Chicago/TB game with real interest, and I sort of felt bad about it.

I missed two comebacks this year, the one against Boston and the one against Cleveland, where I shut the game off in disgust.

It's the highs and lows that make it all worth it.

I think finishing with the 7th best record in the AL is backing in. That's why I'm hoping they finish strong and catch a couple of teams.

It "feels" like the team is backing into a playoff spot and running over the family pooch in the process. Maybe the very high expectations of this season set the bar too high to appreciate still how great it is to get into the playoffs no matter how it happens.

They still have to play the games, though. This is not a done deal.

I think one big problem is that too many of the 'smart' people out in the media were saying the Tigers were going to run away with the Central. Which was kind of stupid in retrospect when you consider that Avila, Papa Grande, V and Peralta had career years and Fister was pretty much as good as V after we acquired him. Out of that group, only V is posting similar numbers and Fister has been what we expected him to be when we got him. But, to be fair, Ajax has been outstanding. In any case, the bar was set too high based on an outliers. This has caused alot of teeth knashing, especially considering we shoot ourselves in the foot every other day on defense. The Tiger brass needs to account for all this moving forward.

I'm not as excited as I was in '06 or '11 because I don't think they've played as well as those teams or had as special a "feel" as those teams did, but I'm still pretty excited they could get to the playoffs again. Also, it isn't easy to make back to back playoff appearances, so if they did just that, that would be pretty exciting too. I don't care if they "back in" (which I disagree that they're doing).
