04/17/12. WCQF Game 4. Predators @Wings 7:30pm ET, NBCSP, FSND, CBC, 97.1

Recommended Posts

I thought I was watching a peewee game on the game winning goal. Three players chasing the puck, leaving the middle wide open. And WTF was Howard thinking? All he had to do was stay on the post. Instead hes 5 feet away from the net with the puck in the corner. This team needs to make changes.

Well, good or bad, the Wings organization has never been big on major shake ups. Unless players leave voluntarily or are offered a front office position to retire, they're not going anywhere. I can see Holmstrom retiring and Stuart bolting for SJ, but otherwise I expect most of the team back.

They have shaken things up quite a bit actually. Trading for Chelios. Trading for Hasek when they already had Osgood. Signing Brett and Luc. They will shake things up when they need to. They need to (it's just harder to do that now).

They traded the Pillsbury dough boy for Chelios when he was at the end of his career(or so we thought). Hull and Robitaille were at the end of their careers also and in the pre-cap era. We could throw money at people that on other team would or could. The last really significant move I can think of them making was trading Primeau for Shanahan.

Adding Hasek, Hull and Robitaille isn't shaking things up? I strongly disagree with that. That totally shook up the team and it was the drive of those guys trying to get another cup before their careers were over that put the team over the top in 2002.

Adding Teemu Selanne (at the end of his career), or Zach Parise or Shea Weber would count, to me, as shaking things up right now. Even if it was just one of them. They have the money to do it for one - and if Nick retires they could easily get two big players. That is shaking things up.

The only reason we haven't seen it since Hossa in 2009 is that the salary cap has kind of handcuffed them. But they had room this year (and thought after that home winning streak they were set) and didn't gamble. Seeing how weak the power play has looked, maybe a Ryan Smyth could have helped and not cost them too much. Adding a Teemu Selanne to what they have now probably would have made them a lot better (I know, he didn't want to leave, but the Wings never pursued him either). They already have room. The salary cap is going up next year (and it could be up quite a bit more than we've seen in the past) and Holmstrom's 1.5 million and Stuart's 3.75 are both coming off the books. They could be in a great position to add a new #1 defensman and a sniper. If they do fail to make it out of the first round - they will definitely shake it up. If they don't, they are gonna start looking like the Pistons in the not-too-distant future.

All good things must come to an end, and the Wings have been giving us a good thing for over 20 years. I think the cap has finally caught up with them, and they will need to do a mini-rebuilding project to become serious Stanley Cup contenders again. I have every faith in Ken Holland that he can make these moves relatively quickly.

I thought you could've said the same thing about the last two goals. The last one was something I don't even see in high school games. You rarely take the puck up ice in front of your net like that. But when you do, the keeper should be shielding the goal. It didn't happen, a poke and a GOAL. Just a weird third goal.

I give Cleary a pass and to an extent Howard a pass on that. There were 35 seconds to go, the puck was behind your own net, you were shorthanded, you didn't even have a second to waste as had to get that puck up ice and pull Howard to even the sides. Cleary had to cheat a bit and it backfired. The GWG on the Erat play was just ridiculous however. How could 4 professionals (3 defenders plus the goalie) all for that. 1 or 2 guys at most could have handled Erat, it wasn't even an odd man rush. The Wings deserved to lose the game for the stupendous absurdity of that play alone

Not really...Hasek maybe...because we had Osgood...If I recall correctly, both of those guys sat out on the market for quite a while...it isn't like these guys took the place of other regular players...I guess we have different ideas of what a shake up is...To me, it's trading a star, a regular player or someone in their prime...and the Wings just don't do that...adding a couple of aging superstars when all it costs is a few pizzapizzas isn't really taking a big risk or isn't shaking things up, IMO...Signing Parise or Weber (RFA, not likely) or Suter wouldn't really be what I call a shakeup either because they wouldn't be replacing anyone on the current roster...It would be replacing someone who left voluntarily like Lidstrom or Stuart...If they traded Franzen or Zetterberg or Kronwall...that to me would be "shaking things up"...I fully expect all those guys to be back and Hudler, Cleary and Filppula, etc...

Anyways, it's a new day, the sun has come up (although pouring rain here in Vancouver) and I'm looking forward to Game 5. I didn't stop watching last year when they fell down 3-0 to SJ or when the Tigers dropped to 3-1 versus Texas. Neither the Wings nor Tigers won their series but the Wings did give us 3 unexpected wins and the Tigers 1. The Wings will probably be outplayed on Friday but doesn't mean they can't eke out a win, which would set up a fun Sunday.

Yep, its proof they need a defensive overhaul. I can't believe what they are paying Ericsson. Quincey was not worth a first rounder and White has never been very good (why so many teams let him go). Lidstrom is sadly still the best they have at his age. Kronwall has gotten better, but has not stepped it up in these playoffs like he did last year. I am not blaming being down in the series on Jimmy Howard (that's been done to death), but on that play - what was he thinking?

The play was so stupid that everyone who watched it is less intelligent for having seen it.

It was like when 4 guys walk in to a restaurant and blindly follow the hot hostess only to find out she wasn't leading them to their table but instead was just headed to the kitchen to talk to one of the cooks.

Let's remember that the Wings traded Slava Kozlov to get Hasek in 2001-02 so that was definitely a shakeup as Slava was still productive at that point (I know some on here hate him but he was). The only sacred cows on this team are Datsyuk, Hank, and Kronwall. Everyone else is fair game right now and if they go out Friday, they have to make a move to get back to where they need to be.

That is very little league there.......

I coach a travel team made up of 7th and 8th graders unable to make the full travel teams but too good for house. They would never do that.

The reason the Wings need to shake things up if they lose Friday is not because it's a 1st round exit. It's because it's a post-All Star Break collapse PLUS a 1st round exit. If the Wings had played well through 82 games and lost 1st place to St. Louis on the final day of the season I wouldn't put too much stock in an early knockout. Just like Pittsburgh and Vancouver shouldn't overreact if they lose tonight.

It's funny how we talk about baseball playoffs being a crapshoot then obsess over how many goals Filppula and Miller has in 4 games. I think Filppula could be trade bait this offseason but not because he hasn't scored in this post-season but rather his value is high after a strong regular season. Likewise, I don't think Cleary is likely to be traded not because he's done much of value recently but because coming off an injury-plagued down year he's unlikely to fetch much.

My son's Squirt A team had a game early in the year where both D-men chased a guy into the corner, leaving the storefront open, and it led to an easy goal. Since then every practice has had at least some portion of the time devoted to defensive zone positioning. I don't think I have seen them make a play like that again, and it is a non-descript Squirt A team.

Yeah, there were reasons for it. He had to get the puck up the ice. Like you said, there was something like 30 seconds left. Still, Howard should've had his stick on the ice, making that nice little wall while it happened.

I only saw it during the game and the replay the quick times they showed it after the actual goal. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh. It's likely Howard didn't have the time to react to make that little wall as it was being carried near the net. Like yous said, it was hurried. But that's what you'll usually see a keeper do.
