Tigers bring Ramon Santiago back for 2 years

Recommended Posts

I am legitimately very, very happy about this! Generally, he gets the job done whenever he is called upon. Not only that, but I've read countless articles on how he is one of the most influential leaders in the clubhouse. That's important. Good stuff!

This is a no-brainer. Santiago is their best IF defender, plays the middle positions, and can play a semi-regular role. I would have no problem with him starting regularly, but for whatever reason that has not been the case and probably won't be.

All that having been said, now they need to go out and get a clear upgrade at 3B or 2B.

At this point I'm completely supporting Kelly Johnson for full-time 2B. He's coming off a bad year and is a little older (so should be a decent bargain), but based on career numbers and normal BABIP luck he should be good for a .250/.330/.440/.770 line and plus defense at 2B.

Tigers got Santiago back for $4M total for two years and Maicer Izturis was going to cost $3.8M for one year.

Izturis is a much better hitter than Santiago. They're equally as versatile and have the same defensive ability. If they acquire Izturis, he could start every day at 3B assuming he stays healthy.

I like Izturis and would be fairly happy with him in the mix, but I'd prefer Kelly Johnson.

Honestly, I'd take any and all of: Headley, Johnson, Izturis, Callaspo, Prado. Wouldn't be mad with any of them. With the aggressive nature it seems like DD has been looking at players, and the amount of guys we've been linked to, this leads me to believe a move or two is coming here soon.

I guess the Tigers didn't want to hand the job to Worth. I'm a little surprised, even though I think we're better off with Santiago.

I think they're obviously concerned that worth can't even muster a .650 OPS. Or else they'd probably have given him the job.

Johnson has the potential to be the steal of the offseason. with a good BABIP, he's a top flight 2B.

I'd be very surprised if the Tigers went into the season with Santiago/Raburn and Kelly/Inge. I believe they will upgrade one of those spots. I'd rather it be third base, but there seems to be more players available at second.

Edit: Actually the last part is not true. Izturis and Prado can play 3B as well if not better than second. So, there are probably equal possibilities at both positions.

This, yep! :classic:

Ramon Santiago is easily the least polarizing player in the history of Detroit Tiger message boards.

Apparently, we can handle the truth.

Who would you rather have, Prado over Izturis?

That's legitimate, I don't think he can muster a .650 OPS. But as the utility IF, that wouldn't hurt us too much, if you have an everyday SS and 2B -- which limits his playing time. And therein lies the rub, since we don't have an everyday 2B. So I see this as an indication that the organization doesn't think it's likely they will land Johnson, Prado, et al. Therefore, they felt the need to re-sign Santiago since they seem to be okay using him in some sort of part-time starter role.

Or maybe he's just a known commodity, and for the 2MM, they'd rather just keep the clubhouse, fans, and Cabrera happy. Plus, they probably still think he's better than Worth. They've been linked to too many 2B/3B at this point to think they're not serious about acquiring one. Santiago usually only plays 90 games anyway.

Personally, I'd have gone with Worth, but I can completely understand why they decided on Santiago. Worst comes to worst, he's always tradable.

Matt Klaassen at Fangraphs a big fan of the Santiago signing. An interesting blog post where he suggests, even with no additional moves, we'd be better off in 2012, simply by non-tendering Young, starting Santiago at 2b and Raburn in LF.

Possible Ripples from Ramon Santiago’s Return | FanGraphs Baseball

One more reason to wonder what exactly they do over there at FanGraphs that makes them think they have a crystal ball. Sometimes, value is value and the known commodity is just the devil you know.

If you just read the statistical pieces and stay out of opinionated ones, the site is much better.

Well neither Santiago or Raburn have played a full season so who knows if he's wrong?

But I do suspect a platoon would be more productive, if the Tigers land a decent LF option like Cespedes.
