And from the BA chat:

Dale (Detroit): What is Brenny Paulino's ceiling? Does he have top of the rotation potential?

Ben Badler: It's as high as his offspeed stuff will take him. There wasn't a starter in that league with a better fastball, and there might even be more in there given his age and body type. In the DSL last year and even this year, his fastball is so explosive that he can just blow it by hitters, so he just hasn't had the need to refine his secondary pitches, but they're making progress. But it's absolutely a huge arm with a high ceiling.

The BA writer was really positive about Paulino. I knew he had a really good arm with room to grow, but wasn't sure he would be rated so high in the league.

According to TigsTown, Mark is high on Paulino too. I am looking forward to seeing what he does in West Michigan next year.

Vasquez was one of the youngest players in the GCL last year and put in a solid appearence. I hope he gets the nod at West Michigan as well. I would love to see whathe can do in a ful season against tougher pitching.

It'll be interesting to see where he goes next year (though I'd guess GCL again or NYP)...It seems like it'd be really difficult to figure out where to start a 17 year old this far in advance.

I'm not sure how well regarded he is (especially defensively), but I'm curious to see what they do with Purroy next year. Pretty small sample, but good numbers for a 19 year old catcher in that league.

Aaron Westlake checks in at #12 on the NYP League top 20. He's the only Tiger representative, though former Tiger draftee Parker Markel (and current TB farmhand) was #3.

Good info...I thought we might see Tyler Collins on the bottom end of the NYP list, but no such luck.

Also, because it's the Tigers, I'm just going to go ahead and assume Paulino ends up as a reliever.

Thought the same as well, but given their history it doesn't necessarily surprise me that BA had Westlake ahead of him. For what its worth, the writer liked Collins, but actually liked Suarez a little more (in terms of Tigers that didn't make the list).

Castellanos checks in at #4 in the BA Midwest League rankings.

I was comparing Miguels Cabrera's stat line in the MWL to Castellanos and it is very similar with Castellanos bettering Miguel is several areas. Miguel was only 18 when he played in the MWL and was a SS, but Castellanos had less professional time then Miguel and showed good doubles power. Miguel struck out far less then Nick, which is really Nick's only negative this season.

I'm surprised to see Westlake at 12 while Collins isn't on the list. I was far more impressed with Collins' tools than Westlake's from the games I saw in Connecticut.

That was a pretty encouraging write-up on Castellanos....The assessment of him defensively struck me as much more positive than some of the other things I've read.

BA has a two or three year history of pimping Westlake....can't stop now.

This is why it didn't surprise me to see him there instead of Collins or Suarez. In general, they seem fairly hesitant to alter their pre-draft rankings for guys in short-season ball. At a certain level, I guess this makes sense, though I disagree with it here.

The RHP list seems much more stacked, but I was still happy to see Smyly ranked that high.
