2011 Michigan Season Prediction Thread

Recommended Posts

I require 10 wins, so it wouldn't make sense for me to predict less than that. I don't care where the two losses come from. Anything less than 10 wins and Brandon should lose his job. There's really no reason that this many years post-Carr that we should be looking at 6-7 win seasons. RR was held accountable for last season, and I expect Brandon to be held accountable for 2011 if we aren't back where we should be. I'm sure it's not popular, but this is how I see it.

I've seen the over under at 7.5, and that seems about right from a betting standpoint.

What Sportsbook had it at 7.5? I hadn't seen it over 7 as yet - might make for some tempting action.

I think I'll feel more comfortable guessing each game, four games in, entering Big Ten play.

I agree with 8 wins.

Last year I guessed 7-5 -- and was right, so I can see a one game improvement. I don't see a one game improvement, when you bring back so many starters - the most in the Big Ten, as that much of a stretch.

Ahhh...Who wouldn't??? Obviously more data should allow for a more accurate assessment! Kind of defeats the purpose, though.

As for returning all those starters; particularly on defense...There exists a second side to that coin. Michigan's biggest problem is still going to be talent for 2011. They have middle-pack talent - especially on the defensive side of the ball. In addition, the talent pool they are drawing from, is pretty shallow. Martin's a player, no question about it, also happens to be a young man that's been ridden pretty hard for the last 3 years. Woolfolk's return should hopefully net you a solid B10 corner. I like the potential of Kenny Demens - brings an element of toughness and accountability to a position that's lacked it for a few years now. But after that...Van Bergen is a solid B10 'SS end' - I'm not buyin' him on the inside much...Whoever else you end up playing next to Martin (Big Willy, the walk-on, Washington...And then moving out to end, Roh, Black, etc...Long way to go there to get to + B10 d-linemen. I still find much of the back 7 to be pretty uninspiring...The Gordons, Kovacs, whoever the heck you play opposite Woolfolk...Lot's of ?'s out there, imo.

I require 10 wins, so it wouldn't make sense for me to predict less than that. I don't care where the two losses come from. Anything less than 10 wins and Brandon should lose his job. There's really no reason that this many years post-Carr that we should be looking at 6-7 win seasons. LOVE IT!!! Let's see if we can't keep you guys in a perpetual state of rebuild...I'm thinking Joe Tiller next up???

Your obsession of Michigan football baffles me. We'll see what happens when the season starts.

Huh?

Look, I realize it's easier to shoot the messenger than the message, but that's pretty weak even from you Benke. Do you disagree with my assessment of the relative talent level (in comparison to the rest of the conferece)...Or of VanBergen playing on the inside occasionally; or the relative dearth of known quality back 7 personnel??? Do you see Cam Gordon becoming a decidedly better tackler; or T Gordon better positionally; or Avery being able to check some of the B10's better receiving corps? Is Kovacs suddenly going to become a demonstrably better athlete? Is anyone prepared to help Mike Martin out on the inside?

Are any of these issues made illegitimate because they were expressed (at least on this occasion) from a fan of a rival school? Oh well...I guess we'll see when the season starts...Until then maybe you can start posting player youtube videos in this thread too, you know, to bide our time.

So you're basically stating that no matter what, we can't discuss Michigan here without you slamming everything? We can't be optimistic about any player(s) getting better, cause you don't think they will.

Oh, don't get me wrong .. you're going to give me another "huh?" with this too, but it's clear.

I like MIke Martin...I like VanBergen (at strong-side DE - the fact there's even talk about moving him inside quite possibly an indictment on the other options there)...I like Kenny Demens...A team could do a hell of a lot worse than Troy Woolfolk at corner...Heck, I liked some of what I saw from Thomas Gordon at times last year.

But you don't want to discuss players, you want to post a youtube video and then opine that we'll know more in October should anyone offer up an even remotely critical observation. Let me bottom line it for you, where do you find my criticism (of SOME on the roster) unfounded or lacking? Can one even start to argue that some of that criticism or "skepticism" isn't statistically justified???

And heck,I think most will get better, they just have farther to go than some others to get to "quality". RichRod absolutely decimated the Michigan Lines (on both sides of the ball) and it's going to take a couple years to suss that mess out...And in the meantime some uncommonly good health and a very precocious youngster or two are probably going to be needed, to produce the types of seasons Michigan Football fans once just assumed.

Sept. 3, 2011 Western Michigan 3:30 pm ET Denard early, Denard often. Michigan rolls the Broncos by 4 scores minimum.

Sept. 10, 2011 Notre Dame 8:00 pm ET Great battle under the lights sees a ton of points put on the board...Dayne Crist and an improved ND defense hands Hoke his first rivalry loss.

Sept. 17, 2011 Eastern Michigan 12:00 pm ET Michigan's quest to own the State shifts into high gear, Ron English gets beaten so badly, Ypsilanti makes him change his name to Ron French.

Sept. 24, 2011 San Diego St. TBA Relatively tight affair sees the Aztec offense keep things somewhat close, but an inability to slow down the Wolverine offense in the second half spells doom and a 2-score loss.

Oct. 1, 2011 Minnesota TBA Welcome to the conference Jerry, how long will you be staying?

Oct. 8, 2011 at Northwestern 7:00 pm ET Dan Persa carves up a suspect Michigan defense to the tune of 400 total yards and 4+ scores. Denard has his first suspect outing tossing a couple picks.

Oct. 15, 2011 at Michigan State TBA Hoke starts out his rivalry record eerily similar to his predecessor as Michigan gets handled fairly convincingly 2+ scores.

Oct. 29, 2011 Purdue 12:00 pm ET Boilers check to see if Edman has any eligibility left...Or a spare ACL.

Nov. 5, 2011 at Iowa TBA Iowa saves thoughts of bowl eligibility with a dramatic 4th quarter win.

Nov. 12, 2011 at Illinois TBA In a battle for most mockable 4 letter last name, Hoke comes out on top, getting the Wolverines back in the conference win column.

Nov. 19, 2011 Nebraska TBA A Nebraska team, that's getting a touch overrated this season, imo, does the best job of keeping the Fighting Denard's off the board - holding Michigan to a season-low 13 points. Taylor Martinez gets off the phone with daddy just in time to turn in a pair of second half running scores to salt away a 13 point win.

Nov. 26, 2011 Ohio State TBA Luke Fickell, having had the interim tag removed 3 weeks earlier, and his future employment terminated a week after that, gets the fighting Hokes on the rivalry scoreboard, and gives Michigan fans enough positive mojo to continue to see the renaissance...

Final Tally 7-5, (4-4 in the B10 - it took Richard 3 years to accomplish that feat!) Enjoy it, Michigan loses 7 in 2012, and the vultures start circling Ann Arbor all over again...

Your entire post is "flame bait" .. all the way to the condescending final sentence, wink at the end.

LOL. You seriously need to get over yourself...The last sentence was a total, joke. The rest was a legit prediction post - I can't help your own insecurities. Heck, I even color coded it for aesthetics, I thought you of all posters would appreciate that touch!

Well, you got one right.

Cool. Hey, let me thank you again for making a thread just so you can condescendingly make fun of UM.

That Michigan State beating of Michigan was a shocker ... but such a good read, thanks.

Yeah, I wasn't really trying to run out on the proverbial limb looking for upset candidates...Just picking the most sensical outcomes as I see them.

Not sure what this means.

Hey, I'm just glad you have this thread/forum to post your constant distaste for everything Michigan.

EDIT: oh, and I am now working on my prediction post ... very detailed, cause details are where it's at.

Team has talent on offense and some talent on the defense, however, they have very little depth on the Oline or the Dline and the lack of a feature back is worrisome.

6-7 wins is expectation, possibly 8.

Sept. 3, 2011 Western Michigan: UM 55 WMU 13 The offense blows up in the first quarter to jump out 21-0. They end halftime up 35-0. the second string play most of the second half.

Sept. 10, 2011 Notre Dame: UM 31 ND 27 Another late drive by Denard breaks the heart of the ND in the final minutes of the game.

Sept. 17, 2011 Eastern Michigan: UM 39 EU 10 Michigan comes out flat after a big victory against ND. They finish the 3rd quarter with a bang, and the second string end the game.

Sept. 24, 2011 San Diego St: UM 27 SDS 21 Tight game, but Michigan has it in hand till a late run by SDS in the 4th quarter makes it close.

Oct. 1, 2011 Minnesota: UM 42 Minn 17 Denard opens up early, and puts the game out of hand.

Oct. 8, 2011 at Northwestern: UM 38 NU 35 Michigan squeezes away with a narrow win. The defense struggles with the NU passing attack.

Oct. 15, 2011 at Michigan State: UM 27 MSU 31 Michigan plays poorly all game, till Denard turns it on the 4th quarter scoring 17 points. They have a shot in the final minute of the game, and Denard throws an INT in the endzone.

Oct. 29, 2011 Purdue: UM 35 PU 13 Michigan plays with a vengeance after last weeks disappointing loss.

Nov. 5, 2011 at Iowa: UM 31 IU 30 Michigan comes back after crapping the bed last time in Iowa, only this time they actually squeak it out.

Nov. 12, 2011 at Illinois: UM 31 Ill 17 The score is closer than the game.

Nov. 19, 2011 Nebraska: UM 21 UN 31 Nebraska seems to have an answer to everything Michigan throws at them. Another late comeback falls short as Michigan loses their second game of the season, but most importantly, they lose any chance of a Big Ten championship game.

Nov. 26, 2011 Ohio State: UM 34 OSU 31 Ohio State looks lost on the field after a disappointing season. Michigan takes care of business most the game, but Ohio State erupts for 17 unanswered points early in the 4th, but a late turnover kills the clock and gives the win to UM.

Michigan 10-2 (6-2 Big Ten) Hoke looks like a hero, and Michigan makes a New Year's Day bowl. They end the regular season ranked #10. Wisconsin ends the season ranked #4 with 1 loss (heart breaker in the last week to PSU), Nebraska ends the season ranked #7 with 1 loss (Wis), MSU end the season ranked #14 with 3 losses (ND, Wisc, Neb), and ND ends the season ranked #15 with 3 losses (UM, USC, Stan). OSU finishes the season with 4 losses (MSU, Neb, Wisconsin, UM) and a top 25 ranking. Hopefully all do well in bowl games! (except ND and OSU, I hope they do crappy)

I know I'm signing up for abuse with those predictions!! Oh well, lets see if I'm Nostradamus this year (I've never been before, so I hope to start this year).
