Local Sports radio

Recommended Posts

Some grumbles about WXYT and WDFN. I love the fact that I can listen to the swirling maelstrom of Detroit fans on two different stations via the iphone apps iHeartradio and radio.com...its great.

But if I could I would:

1. Valenti has got to go... find us a local guy to do drive time on wxyt...the entire schtick about how Detroit's fans are gullible fools is just insulting.

2. Mike Stone's morning show is not something you can listen to with a kid in the car. Not very good when I have listened at other times. What happened to him? He used to be pretty decent in the afternoons.

3. Dan Patrick? WTF? WDFN just wrote off the Ryan Ermanni time frame. I understand they were having schedule problems with him. Damn shame.

4. Jim Rome? again...no national shows... people can get satellite radio for that garbage.

5. Sean, Turp and Killer on WDFN drive time is pretty good. Turp from Grand Rapids is pretty good and I like the statewide call-ins. Just an interesting perspective. That concept should be attempted more.

6. Karsh and Anderson are enjoyable. Good reason to sneak out of the office to drive to lunch to hear some Detroit talk.

7. Shep in the morning is ok...he really should allow his partner (???) to talk once in a while.

8. Pat Caputo is doing a fine job given his putatively limited mental capacities. (By which I mean...dude, your not Curly from the Three Stooges...don't always go there)

So to summarize...more local content. I don't want to hear about the Lakers...and if I do I'll go to satellite.

I think Dan Patrick is the most boring show in all of radio. That includes Saturday afternoon NPR. Extremely disappointing that Ermanni isn't on there anymore. I

I used to be a big Valenti fan, but he's horrible now. All he does is taunt fans of everything except MSU. He used to be well reasoned, but now he's oblivious to his own blatant contradictions.

I'm a huge Rome fan. But I stream it so I'd just find a different station to stream it from if WDFN moved it.

STK is good, I dig it... But the show would be equally good (perhaps better) without turp.

Caputo is fine w/ me. Give or take.

One thought I had about the east side/west side aspect of STK is the idea of going around the NFC North during football season to have one of the time slots do a joint show with that week's Lions opponent's local show. The idea being you'd get the other perspective. If the Lions are more competitive it would be interesting. Otherwise, it might be kinda sickening.

I love that idea. When the Pistons were in the playoffs (eons ago) D-Train would always post a bunch of articles from the opponent's local media, it was great to read.

I suspect there might be too much show planning and whatnot to be able to pull off what you're talking about, but I'm no expert by any means.

But you hate the NFL right? Did you mean the CFL? :D

The major issue w/ local sports radio is no Toronto Argonauts coverage. Cecil is missing out on his boys

In a way, STK did that last season, albeit a much smaller version. For UM/MSU games they'd have a weekly segment called "Know Your Enemy" where they'd talk with a media personality that covered that week's opponent. They'd also quite frequently do similar things with the teams the Lions were playing.

STK is a great show, it's a staple in my car for my evening drive home from work. Terp is obviously the least experienced and polished of the group, but he's gotten better over time. Sean and Killer carry the show, but on the days Terp is forced to speak more, there is much less drop-off than there was previously.

I agree Terp is better than he was. The college FB application of the idea is also a good one.

I'll take less intelligent conversation if I'm not yelled at hearing how "poor me, everyone doesn't listen to what I say" crap all the time.

I hardly listen to sports radio any more because my usual car doesn't have a radio. But when I do have the car with the radio, I'll give the morning show and Karsch and Anderson a shot. I get tired of Karsch trying to break down every word in a comment like he's the closer or something, but generally they are quiet and easy to listen to - even if I don't think they are the ultimate when it comes to sports intelligence. Again, that's not always the most important thing. I just want it to be "easy" to listen to. If I'm having a bad day or at work, I don't want to hear stressful complaining and yelling and how people never listen to what I actually say comments from the people at the station. For that reason, if it's 2 p.m. and I know a Tiger game isn't on, I don't even turn on 97.1. I don't need to hear one-sided conversations or be preached down to. I don't need to hear "I want this guy, so if you don't get him and it doesn't work, I'm right and you're wrong" comments, forgetting that possibly, maybe, that guy didn't want to come here or maybe the price tag was ridiculously high - stuff like that. To Valenti, he wants it means he gets it without any consequence, so this way 2 years later he's always right and we'll hear "Don't blame me, I wanted to get (fill in the blank) and you didn't get him" garbage. And if you are getting him, he'll shut you up because he has the controls. Or come up with some ridiculous comment that you simply can't battle because his logic is terrible. For example, his Pistons complaints. they've never done anything, and when they did win it didn't matter because the Lakers imploded. Never mind the fact, they went to the finals the next season, darn near won two of those titles and the Lakers didn't "implode" against anyone else. But, yeah, the Pistons title was a fluke. Or conversations about Barry. Barry wasn't that great. Say he's second to Emmitt Smith so he must've been good and he'll say "Well, he's overrated too." If the top two rushers of all time are over-rated and you can't use evidence because it's contrary to the "OPINION" of the guy running the show, then you have an idiot running the show. Sorry, I'd use more current examples, but, like I said, I've really limited my listening of that show. But those were reoccuring themes for years. And I'm sure they still come up upon occasion.

DNF - usually didn't come out for me when it was mostly local, so I don't even think about checking it out.

So summary - I'll occasionally listen between 10-2 because they are usually a bit gentler to listen to. I can't remember the last time my radio was on 97.1FM for more than five minutes between 2 and 6.

I should say this though, during the weekend I'll have my home radio on a lot during the afternoon. It's a bit more peaceful with the two guys that sound pretty similar and Caputo, and generally a Tiger game is coming on relatively soon. I certainly listen to a ton more weekend sports talk on 97.1 than weekday as it stands now.

I do get a little sick of the Matt Dery/Mike Valenti bashing everything Detroit. They even find a way to back-handed slam Verlander today. Dery annoys me with his Peter Brady voice. I am not asking for all homers all the time, but this schtick is just old. We are a bunch of rubes - we don't know anything about sports because we are not from New York. Dery is jealous because he is from Cleveland and they have never won anything ever - and never will. Valenti was saying Detroit fans accept mediocre players because as a sports town we don't understand what it's like to win. Tigers 84, Pistons 89, 90, Mich B-Ball 89, Wings 97,98,02,08, Mich Football 97, MSU B-Ball 99. No, we know nothing because we don't have the Yankees or Giants or Knicks or Rangers............LOL He is also a ****bag because if you even come close to calling him out on his b.s. - he hangs up.

Pat Caputo is a stupid man. He is just a stupid, stupid man. I can't believe that guy is a writer and it shows how low the standards are in journalism. He makes Rob Parker look like a rocket scientist.

Middays Doug and Gator are fine, but Doug doesn't get sarcasm very well. And the morning, I don't get what is going on with Stoney, but I hate the juvenile sex crap. Let Drew and Mike carry that torch. Stoney is smarter than that and Bill and Sara are awful - just awful.

Back in the day, I wondered if they ventured on our boards to find subject matter as well.

There'd be times we'd have a subject being discussed on this board that could be clearly considered beyond the mainstream, and then I'd turn on the radio and hear conversations with points people made here. It's very possible they had these opinions without looking on the board, but these were subjects beyond your typical ones with explanations that sounded a lot like what was said on this board. Once or twice, that can happen, but you'd catch it a few times a week - just on the times you listened to it.

If they did or still do, I guess I can't blame them. It's only smart to expand your knowledge. But sometimes, I think some people here helped them do their job for an hour or so. Of course, it could just me making up things that weren't really there as well.

Stoney and Bill is fine. It's fluff.

Rome I love. I don't need everything to be native to Detroit and he is funny.

Karsch and Anderson is fine as well. Not great. But kind of fun and moves well.

Valenti is manufactured, paint-by-numbers garbage. I met him once and he was a real sweet guy. But his show is awful.

Sean, terp and Killer is a quality show.

Pat Caputo is the biggest piece of garbage. Arrogance and ignorance come together.

Doug Karsch is about the only local sports talker that I genuinely like anymore.

Terry Foster and Mike Valenti used to be pretty good even as recently as a few years ago, but I think they say things just to piss people off now -- kind of how Gregg Henson was in his final couple of years in Detroit. Matt Dery is straight up unlistenable, and I wish station management would realize that his strengths lie in objective news reporting and calling the odd Pistons game. Opinion is not his forte. Just today he was subbing for Terry Foster, and decided to do his best Mike Valente "rant" impersonation. Just dreadful. Stoney and Bill (and Sara) are about as funny as the Casey Anthony decision, Pat Caputo has completely lost his mind recently, and Jeff Riger might be the absolute worst radio host in the history of radio. All of these guys probably know more about sports than I do, but they sure do suck at radio.

Stoney & Wojo were the best back on the old WDFN. There wasn't a sports show that could touch them in terms of sports knowledge, listener interaction, banter and humor. This new incarnation of The Fan is dreadful and can hardily be considered a local sports talk station anymore.

As far as the Ticket goes I do enjoy Karsch and Anderson a whole lot when together; Gator (Anderson) by himself is a train-wreck but paired with Doug he does well. Those two seem like genuine guys who are out to have a good laugh with each-other and their listeners. They chat about sports as friends who are above average sports fans would; generalized talk with the occasional statistical reference made to back things up. I also enjoy Mike Valenti when he's giving an opinion unrelated to the sports community of Detroit. His on air shtick does get old fast. However, I think the guy really knows his sports and has sensible, if sometimes populist, opinion about sports. Matt Dery also doesn't bother me (when he's not on the Cleveland Express).

The hosts that have no business on the Ticket are Bill and Sara; they're music station hosts, they'd have done fine on WKRK-FM, K-Rock 97.1 as morning/afternoon drive DJ's back in the day. The hosts that have no business in radio Fa...Pat Caputo, Terry Foster Jeff Riger and Dennis Fithian. Between their voices, lack of command over the English language (that's you Pat and Terry) and their sports "knowledge" they don't cut it for me. Give me Art Regner over any of those god awful personalities.

The thing about Bill and Sara is that it's not meant to be a sports show. It's entertainment stuff. My wife listens to them and she doesn't care about sports. That's the target for the timeslot. Otherwise they don't get the ratings they need and we end up with a station like WDFN.

There's a reason why WDFN back in the 90's was so good. The money was flowing. That's not the case anymore.

My only complaint right now with WXYT is the substititions when a regular is on vacation or gone. McCarty is unlistenable. Jeff Riger has an annoying voice and he talks too much. He's the guy at the party who says the inappropriate thing that that ticks off half the people there and causes a big fight.

I flip between WRIF and 1130AM in the morning on the way to work. Depends on what they are talking about. I skip 97.1 for the most part, but my radio has (Honda Civic stock) a button to toggle between AM/FM and I have 1130 on the AM, 97.1 and WRIF on the 2 FM's so I hit one button a couple times and it toggles between those 3 in the morning.

At work I stream 97.1 starting at 10:00AM and listen until 2:00PM when Valenti comes on and then I flip to Pandora the rest of the day at work. I used to listen to them all the time, but Valentis schtick is just annoying and it raises my blood pressure I am sure.

On the drive home it is all about STK. I do flip to 100.9 NPR and listen alot to that as well.

My problem with radio these days is that they are letting people on that troll the hell out of the audience. They give them extra time to spout their non sense and sometimes make topics about it. I email every day (IM) the show when they do this and ask them to stop giving the morons the extra time on the radio. It doesnt seem to work. Like the moron wwho calls all the time talking about how Cabrera only has 2 grand slams so he is not clutch. Or how Calvin Johnson is over rated etc etc.

They troll the hell out of the whole listening audience and if they run with it I turn it off. The MAIN reason I even listen anymore is to keep up with breaking news...ie trades, schedule releases, call ups, injuries etc.

Yeah I loved McCarty as a player, but he is a mush mouth. Not great for radio. Riger is fairly irritating.

Riger is what we call "Ron Radio" - he has that radiospeak voice and its terribly annoying. Just talk like yourself - you are not on Channel 955. Maybe that's how he really speaks, which would be frightening. Pat Caputo sounds like a cartoon character - the "d'uh, which way did he go". Sorry, but for a guy that was a baseball beat writer, he doesn't know what he is talking about half the time. Dennis is fine. Dennis is laid back and talks like he talks and he knows more than you think....he just needs to be paired with someone other than Pat. (I have a problem with Pat because when I called him and quoted him an actual statistic that proved him dead wrong he hung up on me - called me stupid and said I set him up......set him up.....by stating the truth.).

STK is the only show I have access to, unless someone knows of another Detroit sports radio podcast? Because I have looked around and can't find any.

I've started listening to STK more and I do like them a lot.

What, no love for Bill Simonson?

When I was working at WTKA we would do a radiothon for Mott Children's Hospital every year and since TKA airs The Huge Show (delayed at 6pm) He came in and did his show those days from Ann Arbor, from our studio. They acted like this guy was some kind of foreign head of state. He had this yes man with him dressed in a suit and when I went into MY STUDIO that I work in everyday - he stops me and asks what my business is and I told him my business was to get some of my work onto a flash drive to use elsewhere and he says "please don't disturb Mr. Simonson" Uh, no, I won't disturb him on the air, I know he's doing the show....thank you. Huge and his flunky pissed off everyone in the building that day. There is a radio message board where the word huge is not allowed to be printed, whether its talking about him or not...because he has threatened to sue.

He is a jackass.

(and no one wears a suit in radio - not on the programming side anyway).

I still think they do. It happens too regularly on some off-beat subjects. I, of course, don't have any examples because I'm just driving, numbing my brain. But, at least every other week someone on 97.1 will bring something specific up that was addressed here. There are the usual subjects that naturally lead to other subjects, but these are MTS specific things that make me think they scan for ideas.

I don't blame them though, it has to be hard to come up with new material for hours a day, 5 days a week. I would be pilfering everyone and everything!
