what do you mean? medical scholarships? not renewing 5th year seniors? non-commitable offers?

Medical scholarships and not renewing 5th years are going to happen to get to 26, so that's coming.

Michigan only needs to find 2 or 3 scholarships to make room for a class of 26 recruits. They will have no problem making room for a class that size without pulling any Saban or Miles-like shenanigans. There is always some attrition during fall camp, during the season and immediately after. MGoBlog readers need to stop being a bunch of oversigning narcs.

And if there isn't any attrition then the coaches have many ways to create attrition without anyone knowing the difference. I love that college coaches put themselves in the position of actively hoping some of their players simply go away.

There are four or five 5th year seniors I can easily see not being brought back .... it happens.

That said, I just hope UM gets the 26 best prospects possible!

Millions of dollars is on the line for these guys, so it's just the way it is. Sometimes there are guys who don't put in the work and deserve to be cut, but for the guys who just don't have the talent...I would hope most coaches keep those guys.

And there's nothing wrong with not bringing back a 5th year guy. Standard practice everywhere.

This really depends on exactly what they were told coming in and while they were enrolled. For instance, UC has a 5 year engineering program. We have many athletes in the program (even a few football players, but not many). Nearly every engineering athlete redshirts at some point during their career and it's all agreed upon ahead of time. Not renewing a 5th year on someone in that program prevents them from graduating.

Not bringing back a 5th year guy who has had every opportunity to get a degree in 4 years is fine. Not renewing a 5th year athlete that was advised to swift their academic schedule because "they'll have 5 years anyway" (fairly standard among non-revenue sports at least) is still wrong.

In those situations, the athlete might be offered a GA position or some other position on campus that covers their scholarship. I do not know if this typically happens, but I imagine it often does.

Can you be a Graduate Assistant without a bachelors degree? If so (or if other positions are available to mimic the scholarship) I would imagine at a school like UM it probably happens more often than not because there aren't many budget considerations to deal with. At smaller schools I expect the budget realities do become a factor.

I imagine you need to graduate to be a Grad Assistant :silly: That's a good point. Just redact that point from my last post.

Sorry, I don't live on this board.

It's okay. I know you were trying to be quick on the draw there, just a little slow this time. You'll get there.

You are sad.

Hey, just let it go .. he won't post here anymore, no reason to kick him out the door.

Back to recruiting .. it's funny, we have had so much news weekly with recruits, now there's going to a break. The Notre Dame game will be the next huge recruiting date to watch out for, much like the BBQ.

Danny O'Brien called the Michigan coaches today to see if he had an offer he could commit to...

TomVH, via twitter, said he'll talk to Danny after the meeting, see where everything stands.

Sam Webb, on the recruiting roundup this morning, said he talked to Danny while at the BBQ, right before they took the picture with all the committed kids -- the one Chris Wormley joined, and thus, committing to Michigan. Webb said Danny told him - "it's tough not to be in that picture" - and obviously not too tough, cause he didn't jump in, but he did make it known that he's thinking that way. I still think it's a two team race with Michigan and Tennessee, so we'll see here soon. I'd rather get Danny O'Brien than another WR.

With only four spots left, it's going to be tough to turn kids away.

Anyone know if Michigan is in on any Miami recruits? No way top recruits are going there now.

I doubt it. Hoke hasn't recruited much down there that I know of.

RichRod would have gotten every 3* that wanted to come north:)

Mgoblog's TomVH has left the site for a position with ESPN. He'll still cover Michigan recruiting.

On the recruiting roundup, Sam Webb said Tony Posada's departure could open up another spot.

I know Jarrod Wilson was talking about being an early enrollee, and he could take Posada's spot.

No problem. Hopefully the departures of Stokes/Posada means that UM can take another recruit or two.

I'd love to have 5 or 6 more spots to fill, especially with as many kids interested as there are.
