poetry is garbage

Expressed like a true connoisseur. Some poetry is garbage; some is gold.

Love poetry.....I've read all the great poets......

Watch dog bark on a hot summer night,

kill my landlord, kill my landlord,

watch dog bark, though he bite,

kill my landlord, kill my landlord,

slip in his window, break his neck,

then his house I start to wreck,

got no reason, what the heck!

kill my landlord, kill my landlord,

C-I-L-L my landlord.

A tisket a tasket, you're gonna get your *** kicked

You better know what's in my jacket, **** the basket

Oh, God damn CHILD, I mean it's drastic

You end up on a stretched cause I stretch you like Plastikman

**** with me ("you end up the in the cas-ket")

You flow *** ***** nigga, sucker duck bastard

(Yo Common calm down, you gots to calm down!)

This Grape tried to step to me, with his arms down

Lesson number one - when you're ready to throw

never step up talkin - that's like tryin to pitch, but you're balkin

And I'ma steal first, hide the base, but you base

You can call me Pencil Petey cause the marks I ERASE

In case of emergency, it's urgent see, that you see a doctor

You tried to Gamble, but I'm the Proctor

I knock that ***, bringin it down and then slash

Tried to play me with a skit, but now you got a gash

you character, for ya inherit a, neck brace

Makin ya thousand deaths times worser than a Screwface

But they call me Screwneck and I do wreck ****

So next time he push up in the jam, BOY YOU BETTER EXIT

-Common

if that isn't white house worthy talent I don't know what is

I can recite the Rum Tum Tugger by T.S. Elliott for you, or You Are Old Father William or Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll. Also have several Poe and Kipling poems memorized. A few other poets' works.

When I was a kid, we had to memorize poetry and/or famous speeches for school and do dramatic recitations of them. It was an early introduction to public speaking, among other skills learned.

I kind of have a suspicion that this guy's stuff wouldn't be beneficial for that, though.

Why not?

Is that a serious question? Read the poem posted above in the thread, or "Letter to the Law." Is that really material that you think is appropriate for school children to memorize and recite at a school assembly?

It might be okay for older high school students to read and discuss in a literature class, but that is NOT material for children.

Yes, it is a serious question. He was not performing those songs/poems for children. They were for adults.

But he has written children's books like: Amazon.com: I Like You but I Love Me (9780976867418): Common, Lorraine West: Books and has poems for children.

Might be good to read up on a person rather than assume they are something.

What has become of the White House, when negative junk like this is getting rapped inside of it?

He's written three children's books. None of them are poetry.

I don't hate rap like some do, but I wouldn't call it a lesson in elocution either. LOL

I'm pretty sure he's not going to be reading the poem posted above

only thing more hilarious is if he actually did. That would be great. They could air it on comedy central after South Park each week. Common on week 1, nwa reciting f the police in week 2, public enemy, ice cube, there is some great potential

Not relevant to my post. LOL I was on a side trail about poetry and education, not discussing the reading at the White House.

Amen, two of my favorites are Shel Silverstein and Ogden Nash.
