I don't understand. How does Parise signing a 1 year contract preclude a midseason deal?

I don't believe it does. I think the reason (I have nothing to back this up) that he didn't sign long-term is because he wants to go to a contender. I don't believe New Jersey will be one next season; maybe, neither does he.

Could be that the Devils have no idea how to manage the salary cap too, and thus don't have the money to sign him long term. I know they got rid of Rolston (the Islanders are such morons for helping out the Devils by taking him) but I doubt their cap situation got that much better since it was so bad before.

Just looked it up: they only have $ 2.5 million in cap space this next season.

DETROIT -- The 2011 edition of Red Wings HockeyFest, co-presented by 97.1 The Ticket and Fox Sports Detroit, is set to take place at Joe Louis Arena on Saturday, September 10 (11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.), providing citizens of Hockeytown with an unforgettable day of fun, family-friendly activities as well as the chance to meet some of their favorite players. A preliminary list of Red Wings set to attend this much-anticipated event can be found below alongside their designated appearance times. Additional current players as well as members of the Red Wings Alumni Association will be added to this list at a later time.

Tickets to Red Wings HockeyFest are now on sale at the JLA Box Office (313-396-7575), all Ticketmaster (800-745-3000) outlets and online at DetroitRedWings.com. General admission adult tickets are priced at $25 apiece while kids (12 & under) tickets are available for $15 each.

In addition to an autograph session, this year’s HockeyFest will feature several interactive fun zones, a tour of the Red Wings’ locker room, photo opportunities with Detroit’s 2008 Stanley Cup banner and the official JLA zamboni, Q&A sessions with players, staff, and alumni, a live DJ, a History of Hockeytown retrospective and contests/prizes galore.
