Pistons to retire Rodman's #10

Recommended Posts

WXYT is saying there's reports that they'll retire his #10 on April 1.

I don't agree.

PR move for one game's ticket sales.

FWIW, I had to look it up, but here are the current retired numbers:

2 - Chuck Daly; 4 - Joe Dumars; 11 - Isiah Thomas; 15 - Vinnie Johnson; 16 - Bob Lanier; 21 - Dave Bing; 40 - Bill Laimbeer

NBA.com: Hanging From the Rafters

From that list, I still say Vinnie Johnson's number being retired is pretty ridiculous.

A travesty.

This whole 19 years of Bad Boy Rehashing for the purpose of ticket sales and P.R. since 1992, is a Travesty.

I hope Gores bans any mention of the Bad Boy Era (or for that fact, the utterance of "IT'S THOUGH, FOR THREE", or "COUNT THAT BABY, AND A FOUL!!!"), for life.

It's cool with me. If a team wants to retire a number, that's their decision, it's not like we're talking hall of fame where we must think about him in terms of every other player in the NBA. There are really only two eras in Piston ball that people want to celebrate, and he was an important part of one of them. He's also a Piston that received NBA praise by being a 2 time defensive player of the year. If they want to celebrate that, I have no problem with it.

As far as someone mentioning Ben Wallace - I hope it happens. That's one of the reasons I wanted him to come back, so that one day his jersey could be raised. He is the embodiment of an era in my eyes. The face of the franchise when they truly did "go to work", setting that example with his play every time he stepped on the court. He represented everything that I rooted for during the latest Piston run, and I hope he gets his number - the one that Stuckey should have given back to him - retired for it.

Hrm, not sure I agree with this at all. He's such a messed up human being as well, I wish they would wait until he gets his act straightened out.

They opened up the flood gates when they retired Vinnie Johnson's number. Nothing against him because he was a good player but not deserving of having his number retired. Rodman really is in the same boat. Very good player for this team but too many years with other teams. Everyone else belongs up there and I don't think anyone will argue that.

As for Ben Wallace, coming back for 2 years and playing well for the most part pretty much makes it a guarantee the number 3 will go up there and rightfully so. As mentioned earlier, he was the face of the team for 5-6 years, played at a very high level, and accomplished a lot of goals. I also have no problem with Tayshaun going up there or Chauncey for that matter.

I don't like this. Rodman was a really good player for Detroit, but he was basically a bench player for the two championship years (I know, Vinnie...) and didn't really blossom until his last few years here. He left during his prime, demanding to be traded from the Pistons. I think number retirements should be reserved for players who played 10 years in the uniform, minimum, and and were among the best in the league at their position for at least seven of those years. I don't think any of the Billups teams deserves have their numbers retired.

Grant Hill is probably more deserving of this than Rodman, quite honestly.

Here's my view on this.

Rodman's number can be retired. For Pete's sake, Vinnie Johnson had his number retired. But there's one issue I have with this. It's not has Rodman done enough to get his number retired. The question is does he respect the honor? He hasn't shown up to other things, and might not show up just because he decides to drink to oblivion at one of the casinos that day. If he does show up, he could be in a dress or looking pretty disrespectful. He may even be plastered if he does show up.

You can't look up with much certainty that he's going to respect the honor you are about to give to him, so why give it to him? It all might go without a hitch, but the fact that everyone that's going to sit in the stands that game will wonder if it may not, tells you why he's not ready for this honor.

Ben Wallace

If Ben doesn't get his number retired, then why retire anyone's number? The guy was the key focal point of what you wanted your team to be during two trips to the NBA Finals. They didn't base those teams around an offensive player and what he could do - they based it on Ben's ability to defend the paint and be an all around pain in the (you know what) help defender that made people just say "Screw it, we're not attacking the paint." Ben's a lock to be retired.

That said, it's hard not to allow any of those five starters to be retired. Again, Vinnie Johnson is up there. How can the five starters not be put up there if Vinnie is?

Ben's # should never, ever be retired. He left us to go to Chicago when he could have easily remained a Piston. It was a very good business decision on his part, but it's still unforgivable and disloyal to the team.

Still, there's no denying how amazing he was defensively for us for many years. His numbers were astounding as was his presence alone on the Piston floor for his teammates (I assume) and the fans.

Great player, great guy, but disloyal Piston. Keep #3 free. Hell, isn't he #6 now anyway? It shows how nobody really bothers nor concerns themselves with his legacy anyway... I'm looking at you Joe and Rodney.
