My .02 on the App. State rematch...

I like it if Hoke and the team treat it as a statement game... A way to SHOW (and hopefully by that point PROVE) that the Lloyd Carr/Rich Rodriguez era of constantly losing important games (Ohio State/USC/Texas/etc.).

If it is treated as just another "preseason" type game and just re-hashes old wounds, I'll hate it.

Rivals.com College Football - Buchanan: Ten most explosive players

1. QB Denard Robinson, Michigan, Jr.

Buzz: Robinson is like a time bomb: Sooner or later, he's going to explode. Each time Robinson tucks the football, opposing fans hold their breath because he always seems one step away from making a big play. Last season, his first as a full-time starter in former coach Rich Rodriguez's spread offense, Robinson had 16 runs that covered at least 20 yards and seven that exceeded 30 yards. He had at least one 20-yard gain in nine of the Wolverines' 13 games last season. He scored touchdowns on runs of 87, 72, 47, 32 and 32 yards. He also had 12 pass completions of more than 40 yards. That's more than Stanford's Andrew Luck. A big question with Robinson is how the new Michigan staff will make use of his talents.

Why is that a good idea? Honestly.

You blow them out - great...everyone expects it. It's a close game and UM wins...everyone finds it humorous. UM somehow loses...Ann Arbor will implode. No matter what, it's just going to rehash one of the biggest upsets in CFB history and an extreme embarrassment for UM.

Seriously, what's the logic here?

IMO it makes plenty of sense. If you are looking for a cupcake game that will gain national attention....this is the game. If you are looking for a game that will help Michigan say, "we are back!" this game will help in that (I think beating OSU is the only game that officially says that Michigan is back, and I hope that happens before 2014 or we probably have a new head coach). Bottom line is that Michigan wants national attention, and this game gets them the attention. That kind of attention doesn't happen with any other Division 2 opponent for Michigan. I would think that if Hoke continues building some great recruiting classes, that this game should be a HUGE blowout for Michigan.

The nation is still talking about the Appy St. game, so why not give them another reason to talk about it and cash in at the same time?

National attention being based on your teams most humiliating moment, and a 'statement game' against an FBS cupcake is even more humiliating. While I may not be Brady Hoke's biggest fan this is the first thing to happen since he was named coach that really seems completely tone deaf to the Michigan fanbase. Ohio, Michigan Men, etc, people are going to eat that up. I don't see how this is a positive in any way.

If UM needs to make a statement by beating an FCS team (even a good FCS team) then UM has a long way to go to get back to where they were during the Lloyd Carr era. You can't make a statement about how you play in important games against a team you should beat 99% of the time.

It's a good choice for a game from a marketing perspective because it will get a ton more press coverage than the typical FCS game.

That's all this is. It's a cute game, with a nice story leading up to it .... that's all.

No one at Michigan or in that coaching staff is calling this a "statement game" ... lets keep that straight.

Yeah, I think it's kind of cool. App state came in and beat Michigan fair and square. It was a great college football story. I don't have any problem re-living it. It's going to have been seven years since that game. I think most will have gotten over it.

You have way underestimated me. Get over it? The only way I'm going to get over that loss is a strong dose of senility. And I'm hoping that's a few years out for me.

I don't mind playing them again, but let's not underestimate the damage of the worst loss ever.

So I'm now looking forward to seeing how Denard handles things this year, I heard through a friend of Mike Martin's that Mike and the team were all blown away by Denards preparation with the playbook and the new offense. Same friend told me Mike said everyone hated Tate except RichRod last preseason, so he's 1 for 1 on being accurate so far

I was up in the suites last week and the new scoreboards are up and running (apparently they have to leave them on 24/7 for a few weeks to get the bulbs right). They look quite nice.

I think most eyes will be on the Defense. Not like UM had problems scoring... stopping others seemed to be way more challenging. I have no doubt Denard will make plays, but I think he will definitely have some early INTs through his growing pains... such is life with a new Offense.

What kind of damage are you talking about? The app state game didn't cause this current mess. It didn't cause us to lose to osu for four straight years at that point.

I'm with you when it comes to the last few years, nothing is as painful as the RR era. At least in the "worst loss ever" year there was a measure of redemption to end the season.

I don't really care about App State, I just think the idea is pretty silly, are we really pretending Michigan needs more media attention? That they couldn't get plenty of it just by playing a semi-competent team? But hey, I'm sure those ESPN montages of "michigan's most humiliating moments" will be great for recruiting. You can't pass up that kind of publicity.

I guess I just assumed the point of a tomato can game was to get a nice, easy, quiet win.

Ding, ding, ding....winner! There is a better choice for Michigan if you are going to schedule a game against an FCS opponent. Everyone (our rivals included) will be watching for the outcome of this game, and hopefully by 2014, no one will care about Michigan's past as they will be a top 10 program again. You can't get that type of media coverage with half the Division I teams, let alone another FCS team.

It's better to just bury it in the sand and ignore it ever happened, than to squash the past with a 40+ point beat down. :ninja: I mean, we are only 0-1 against Appy State, so it's not THAT bad. :embar:

Bottom line, it's a cupcake game that will get a lot of attention....especially if it showcases a Michigan squad that is back to its pre 2007 days!
