2011 Detroit Lions Offseason

Recommended Posts

It sure is slow around here. I thought these people were Lions fans.

I was on here last offseason, and there were tons of new posts to read everytime I logged on. Now, I can log on 5 days after my last comment, and it will still be the most recent one.

Very different offseason than most. You wont see much going on with Free Agency, the draft will still be a hot topic.

I think the NFL will have a shortened season this year.

Awesome...I got more responses to a comment about the message board posts in 8 hours, than replies about Lions football in over a week :dead: haha

Now that the draft is over, it's time to focus on FA...if and when it does happen. Obviously we have needs at LB and CB...two OLB interest me right now, LeRoy Hill and Justin Durant...both can be had for cheap, short contracts because of injury/character concerns. They can come in on a two year deal with something to prove and be a nice stop gap and perhaps longer term solution to one of our OLB problems. At CB, I have my eye on Chris Carr, he played for Schwartz in 2008 and had a pretty good year in 2011. Those are the few role players I would target, no big names, they fit our scheme and won't be too pricey...perfect Mayhew acquisitions.

I'd like to try and get Tamba Hali from KC and James Anderson from Carolina for Outside Linebackers this off-season.

At 275lbs, Hali is a 3-4 OLB or a DE in a 4-3...and I believe Anderson could be a RFA depending on rules they implement.

Exactly, round peg, square hole. Stephen Tulloch makes a lot more sense.

As it is being reported, the Lions tried to trade up to 5 with an offer of our 1st, 2nd, and 4th. I know it is now a purely academic topic, but what else is there to discuss? Would you have traded the players we received for Patrick Peterson? I had Peterson tied with Green as the best prospect in draft, but I think I prefer what we got.

Probably would have needed to give future picks too... I prefer the draft the Lions actually had. If they were willing to take Peterson and pay him top 5 money... are they willing to pay Asomugha in free agency?

This is what I wonder. I'm cool with Alphonso and Vasher competing for a job and letting Houston go if we can pay up Asomugha. Maybe Calvin would take a little less if we signed him, as he is due to be extended?

I'd probably give Hill a try. Durant is pretty awful. Would be a decent nickel Lb I guess. I'd rather use Palmer than Durant though. Hill could be interesting for cheap.

Ndamukong Suh loves Lions’ line, at least on paper

Posted by Michael David Smith on May 15, 2011, 8:15 PM EDT

APLions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh is excited about the possibilities of lining up next to first-round draft pick Nick Fairley for years to come, but he’s tempering his excitement with a dose of reality: They haven’t done anything yet.

Suh talked about Fairley in a promotional appearance today and said he’s expecting a big rookie season.

“It’s going to be exciting to be able to have a guy like that come out and be really a truly impact guy from the first couple days of him getting on the field,” Suh said.

But Suh then pointed out that all the Lions have right now is a defensive line depth chart that looks impressive.

“I think on paper we have one of the strongest defensive lines across the board,” Suh said. “It’s going to be exciting with that, but we’ve got to go out there and prove it. It may look good on paper, but you definitely want to get out there and make some noise.”

Oh, yes, beautiful... More unnamed team sources...

I believe NOTHING until someone gives their name to one of these reporters... There were other team sources saying the Lions were "likely" to sign him.

Why should I pick Dave Birkett's unnamed source over Chris Habbo's unnamed source?

And while we're talking about unnamed sources, I heard that an NFL labor deal is imminent and will probably be ratified by July 21st.

They would be fortunate to come out with their own FA's with only 8 million.

Plenty of places to find cash;

Bryant Williams - 3 mil

Nathan Vasher - 3 mil

Landon Johnson - 4 mil

Gosder Cherilus - 3 mil

That will bring the amount to spend to 20 mil right there.

If they can find a FA center to replace Raiola at 5 mil/season they'll probably do that too.

You can get a very inexpensive free agent for less than 3 mil. No need to re-sign a terrible player like Nate Vasher.

He was saying to dump those four salaries to free up cash, not to re-sign them... At least that's what I thought it was.

Remember that you can cut the salary but the signing bonus still counts against the cap in the NFL. I haven't looked up any of these deals but if any pieces of a prorated signing bonus remain that would become dead money against the cap.
