Hey, if we can start the 2011 draft thread in April of 2010 then I don't think 2 months is too early for the free agency thread.

I see on PFT today that there are a bunch of Vikings that might be looking to move on. One I wouldn't mind to see in Detroit would be Chad Greenway.

Bernard Berrian maybe worth looking at as a #3.

There are several middle linebackers on the market who had very good years (Greenway, Posluszny, Tulloch) but I think all will be tough to pry away from their current teams. A more realistic option might be David Harris. Not sure I like the idea of signing him though.

Isn't Greenway an OLB and E.J. Henderson the MLB there?

We're going to have to wait on the CBA to be agreed upon before free agency can begin.

True. Greenway is a weakside, and would fit the Lions perfectly.

Not only that, but there may be new rules. We really don't know what the rules will be.

How about we just talk about potential free agents, and as conditions changes so will the conversation. Every conversation about the future doesn't need to be poo poo'd by the "it's too early to talk about that" or the "we just don't know enough yet" crowd. The uncertainty is implicit in these types of conversations.

We've been talking about the draft for a year and nobody has been hurt. It's ok to talk about uncertain things.

If we don't get a new CBA, then we won't have a draft, either. At least we know the rules, the draft order will not be changed.

But we didn't know the draft order back in May of 2010. Even now we don't know all the players who are going to enter the draft.

Despite these uncertainties we can still discuss potential scenarios, just like we can discuss the potential draft scenarios for a whole year.

The first thing the Lions need to do is make sure they get their own Free Agents shored up, RFA or otherwise. If they loose Avril and Houston and end up cutting Petersen, that will be a lot of ground to make up. I'd like to make sure that Avril and Houston are brought back. Then I'll feel comfortable spending outside the organization. I would weigh my options at OLB before releasing Petersen, though I do think it's going to happen.

Adding a pair of OLB and a CB are at the top of my wishlist. OLB is where I'd spend most of my money to build-up through free agency. Tamba Hali from KC is someone I'd pursue aggressively for OLB; the guys become a good pass rushing linebacker and could really help elevate the defensive line. Another guy at the same position would be James Anderson from the Panthers whose had a breakout year with 98 tackles; we might be able to get him for a better price than a Greenway or Harris given his lower track record in the past.

For the corner I would really like to see them go after Brent Grimes (yeah he was un-drafted but still doesn't change my feelings towards this drafts top two corners). He's become a better cover corner over the past couple of seasons and keeps improving his game overall. Atlanta will probably work hard to bring him back but we should work equally as hard to bring him here.

Ill take Ray Edwards and Greenway!

My problem with that is I dislike Ray Edwards. Maybe that would change if he came to Detroit.

It's cool, I just wanted to get the conversion back on track instead of focusing on the uncertainties of the CBA or the uncertainties about the available players.

There is no reason to keep Peterson. His best days are gone and is owed 8 million. At this point in his career they can get better production out of anyone currently on the roster.

I haven't been able to use it in a while, twins take up a lot of time. Although I do carry a couple of 20 pounders around to help make up for it.

Leinart is looking to be a starter because he's paid his dues.

Matt Leinart says he’s ready to be a*starter

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 4, 2011, 6:51 PM EST

After a season where Matt Leinart was cut in favor of Derek Anderson and sat on the bench behind Dan Orlovsky (and Matt Schaub), Leinart believes he’s ready to take the next step in his career.

“I want to be a starter in the league, and I feel like I’ve paid my dues,” Leinart told the Houston Chronicle years now and played behind a Hall of Fame quarterback [Kurt Warner] which a lot of people don’t remember. Obviously, coming here is not the way I planned, but I think Matt Schaub is a great quarterback.

”Leinart said he learned a lot in Houston, but sounds ready to move on.* While there won’t be a lot of great free agent quarterbacks available, it’s hard to imagine Leinart getting anything but a backup job.

I think Drew Stanton is more worthy of being a starter than Leinart.

I can't argue with that.

Just clarifying something...

There WILL be a draft in 2011 no matter what. CBA doesn't apply to that. Free agency does though, no one will (should) be signed if there isn't an agreement. A team COULD sign a FA, but actually paying that signing bonus would be like crossing the picket line!

I really like Ray Edwards, always have, don't think he's needed here (like Vikings Greenway or Leber more in that regard).

Harris or Thornton are great LBs who would look great on our defense as well.
