I'm a little concerned that the Tigers will settle on Victor Martinez as their marquee position player pickup and, as it becomes apparent they're going to lose Crawford, Werth and Dunn, settle for overpaying for second tier pickups like Brad Hawpe, Derrek Lee, Hideki Matsui or Adam Laroche.

I think at a minimum they bring Magglio back. They still have up to 48 million in salary freed up compared to 2010,

so stay tuned and stay hopeful I guess.

Ask Yoda. He knows all. Again, I'd love to see Crawford in Detroit, but I think we're all in dream land with that happening. I love Maggs, but at age 37 the guy isn't getting any younger and it would be a bad move to keep him around for another two years. Heck, we all wanted Maggs gone in 2009 when he had a terrible year. They need another "big name" bat with some power, speed and someone who can play one of the corner spots in the OF.

When Magglio was healthy the team was in first place the first half. If they can bring back Magglio along with Victor Martinez and hopefully a bounce back from Porcello, this is a team that can contend. Adding another bat would just make it that much better.

Well, that's just it. I like Maggs' bat still and think he has another 115 or better OPS+ season left in him, but should he be the worst full time RF in baseball on our dime? Will they then overpay Adam Laroche to stumble through his AL learning curve at 1B while they move Mikey to DH full time? I guess I'm preparing for the worst here.

If Maggs were to come back, I think it would be likely that he is the DH when Martinez is catching. Saying that he would be the worst RFer in baseball is a bit harsh. He has always been rather average defensively.

He was actually pretty good last year. 2.8 UZR last year.

I'd rather have Magglio than Werth. We can get a shorter contract, and I'd say there's even odds that Magglio has a better year than Werth next year. Werth is a bust waiting to happen. A late bloomer with a bad injury history whose only power came in that bandbox of a park in Philadelphia? I think I'll pass.

I'd take Crawford and Magglio. I hope Magglio gets brought back even if we sign another corner OF. Raburn plays in RF when Martinez catches and Magglio is the DH. If Magglio's age does catch up with him, Raburn is still a viable option. To me I'd rather have too much depth than place Raburn in a starting position and have a weak bench.

I agree with Couga 100%.

We've got at least $52 million on the books through 2014 for 3 players. Our 2013 figures have $70 million for only 6 guys.

The difference between Werth and Magglio over the next 2 years isn't worth teh payroll burden for the years after that. Getting another big contract for Crawford or Werth will box the team in for the forseeable future.

I would also give us a solid offensive nucleus for the forseeable future.

It must be a holiday miracle!

It does make sense. That said, I won't not go after Werth .. because of this, cause good players are nice to have.

That said, getting a NEW LF, re-signing Maggs .. that gets us a pretty good offense as well.

As long as we get that -- at least, I'll be happy.

Although I do think Crawford would be one of those guys who actually is worth it. He's been good his whole career, and he's been very healthy as well. With him, it really depends on how ridiculous the price tag gets. If it's around $15 million per year, that's fine. If it's closer to $20 million...no way. Crawford's a good, solid player, but he's not close to Cabrera territory...which is what some of the rumors about his price have been saying.

Yeah, I'd be for this...and when Victor is catching, rotating either Guillen or Maggs into the DH spot and having Raburn spell them in the field.

Looking at Werth and Crawford, I'd rather have Werth, but I'd much rather we just trade for a NEW LF, re-sign Maggs.

I agree with Lynn Henning; I think we'll make a trade ... but there, it's very hard to try and guess on who.

Who would have guessed that we'd get those four guys for Granderson/Jackson?

I doubt Guillen has a future with this team. I think it'll look like this...

Against RHP:

C - Alex Avila

DH - Victor Martinez

RF - Magglio Ordonez

Against LHP:

C - Victor Martinez

DH - Magglio Ordonez

RF - Raburn/Wells

Cabrera could also DH against LHP, with Maggs in RF, and Raburn at 1B.

Problem is-- other than the 15mill/yr + guys out there, Maggs is probably the next best bat in the outfield. Instead of locking up guys for 4yrs plus, if you can re-sign Maggs, he will provide much better than average offense, and he'll be gone in 2 years, at which point they can go persue another outfield option.

Magglio's defense is average out there in right. You trade for a full-time LF who can play good defense (plus hit 2nd) and you wont ever notice Maggs.

I don't get all the pessimism for Ordonez. A few points:

1. He looked much better in RF last year - and better conditioned. He did have financial incentive to, of course.

2. Broken ankles heal, even at age 37.

3. The first half of 2009 is a clear outlier in the Ordonez hitting trend, and I do think his wife's health problems affected him.

4. He's not my first choice, but he's still fairly high on my list.

I think Guillen will play 2B until he gets injured again. He's much better offensively than any other options we have there. The only question is whether he will last until the end of April or the end of July.

How quickly will a guy Guillen's age even intially heal from knee microfracture surgery? We might not see him at all until June or July perhaps?
