2011 Detroit Fantasy Camp

Recommended Posts

Here's some first pics of 2011 baseball. I only focused on our own Larry Herndon, John Warden and Willie Horton. Sorry for the quality but I'm still learning to use the camera and had the net to deal with.

I was a little more mobile today trying to find a warm spot. By game time it was a beautiful late morning. But get out of your vehicle and it was a cold 52 with a North wind that would chill your marrow. The auto hounds were in force free of the snow and ice in their shorts and tanks (idiots who did not last long). Only direct interaction from the field was a nice reunion with Larry Herndon as he enjoyed a fine cigar and we talked of the last season. Was good to see him more mobile than in recent times.

And into some photos...

Larry Herndon. Got on base a few times....after all he is a hitting coach.

John Grubb trying to cup the ball in the end of his bat. Difficulty factor 8.7.

Tony Phillips (who I had forgotten played 5 years or so as a Tiger) gets one into the shallow outfield...

Jon Warden was still working on his grip....

5379167208_4612f8cb04_z.jpg

Jon would go on to later actually achieve a base hit. His speed to 1B will be chronicled..........

5378567591_1cbf1bf025_z.jpg

Dan Petry covered the #4 position today

5379168192_8c40ded758_z.jpg

Tony Phillips need a little help a couple times allowing the campers to fill in behind the plate for him......

5379169800_422255e4b9_z.jpg

I include this shot of Tony because of the batter. Her last name is Sequesta or close to it and has been at every Camp I have been to......

Mr. Willie Horton

As he watches Sequesta get to 1B......

And we close this game with another speed freak in Dave Bergman headed to the first bag........

Thanks for the photos Roger. I am sure it felt good to be back at the field with the camera. I'll be out next weekend to get the rust off of mine.

I am kinda suprised the autographers were out in full force, but i guess they didnt get the email that the game was originally cancelled and then back on.

There were only about three that I recognized....the heavy set man older than I am who normally wears the bucket hat, the curly haired guy (quiet) in his early 50's and one youngster. Had a van full of Northeners in their beach attire coming in as we arrived. Huge backpacks and then another gear bag. No problems with them that I could tell.

Here is who was listed as participating:

Dave Bergman
Ike Blessitt
Darrell Evans
Johnny Grubb
Larry Herndon
Willie Horton
Todd Jones
Al Kaline
Dan Petry
Tony Phillips
Jim Price
Dave Rozema
Frank Tanana
Dick Tracewski
Jon Warden

The players in red were there today. I'm sure Jones was not. Kaline most likely made the introductions before I arrived and retired to the press box or a warm suite. I believe Tracewskii was there in a jacket covering his name placard. I did not see Rod allen but think he was upstaire relieving Price.

It hasn't been above freezing around here for about a month and a half. These pictures are just what the doctor ordered. Seeing Lakeland activities is a better sign of spring than whatever the February 2nd rat's shadow will tell us. Thanks for sharing!

Will never forget Peggy, her clipboard and the Rosey spot she wore.

Peggy surprised me last week. She was not on the field and has let her hair grow out a little. Looked nice in the cold wind. She was in the stands.

The place was so crowded as we left that LEO had the entrances blocked to vehicle access. A few hundred BBQ vendors on site and I had a great pulled pork sandwich at Smokeybones. No way was I going to venture into that maelstorm of hunger and humanity.

This is pregame with Steve Kemp and Willie Hernandez. It was not that cool in the sun and moving around. Probably high 50's at this time with no wind.

Jake Wood was back this year and is warming up with one of our top groundskeepers, Charlie. (Tiger 1961-67)

Willie Hernandez tossed the 1st inning for the Tigers

Hernandez on a bunt (like any of these guys could run it out?)

Milt Wilcox looking very professional (a rare moment today)

5399413116_5e59fd1f1e_z.jpg

Jon Warden...I would comment but I would be subject to one of his unilateral fines at worst or a lens full of silly string next year.

Jake Wood......

it was a great day out there. We had beautiful weather. John Warden was his usual funny self but Willie Hernandez stole the show. John was walking back to the dug out and Willie followed him doing the same waddle walk. John didn't have a clue what was going on.

Somehow Walt Terrell hit this one (Tiger: 1985-88 and 1990-92)

5398830749_3814cd9cbf_z.jpg

Doug Bair (Tiger: 1983-85)

5398839397_d3770344a4_z.jpg

With a 27 mph pitch, Milt's swing may prove premature........

5398847697_97c58f787d_z.jpg

Willie Hernandez is now deciding "is it worth the energy to actually run"?

5399465342_6c07705397_z.jpg

Doug Bair demonstrates body English to keep a single fair....??????????? (Doug, where is that ball again?)

5398869917_9d15ae92f7_z.jpg

No Team Mom, Doug Bair is not blond......

5398874745_a43491b27e_z.jpg

Warden took the time to check on the umpires mother's health.......Mike heath caught for the Tigers.

5398881969_c653eb76d0_z.jpg

Ike Blessitt hitting like he did in 4 games of 1972

5399487102_6516924da6_z.jpg

I kid about Ike, but it seemed we bantered all day out there. He wanted my hat and then for me to buy him lunch. He is definitely a favorite personality of mine.

Walt Terrell in late relief...

5399504206_e499e6ae7c_z.jpg

Just a few more coming in a moment....I promise!

Steve Kemp is getting hungry and ready for the game to get over....

5398906631_40c1fc10cb_z.jpg

Fantasy camp rules insure all campers get to bat, so outs per inning do not count. Seems Mike Heath would get out of his catcher's gear, grab a bat today and the teams would switch sides.

5399513282_681f7ef44c_z.jpg

Steve Kemp late in the game

5398915999_8fbfa6bc15_z.jpg

We all are smelling BBQ and ready to go....Walt Terrell is still playing, but I bet his bag is packed....

5399521970_f9398a0479_z.jpg

Jake Wood paused for a lady to my rear for a picture and I jumped at the opp. Well my camera setting, the sun angle and his dark complexion to not do him justice....

5398922991_efd691daa2_z.jpg

Ike thought the game was over and asking where the Food Court was?

5399525730_d08b8fbac8_z.jpg

John Hiller at the end of the game. A real nice way to spend a day in january!

5398936445_d5e3a43b38_z.jpg

Many thanks to the Campers, the Ex-Tigers, The Detroit Tigers and the Jerry Lewis Foundation for allowing us to enjoy a bit of the past....now if only the draft beer tap was open!

Quick story out of Joker Marchant today. Last year when Verlander began working out, his old ride had been extensively modified for performance. We are talking investing the purchase price of a new Z06 into a 3 year old performance sports car. I was visibly impressed and I think I shocked Justin when I knew what he had done. Before ST was over he had added an Italian exotic to his garage. Well the black car is back in the shop with new amenities being added (can't wait to ask). No, he is not driving the Bull and has added another exotic ride to his collection. I have only heard the exhaust and seen the picture. Beautiful music!

Photo set on the Tigers fantasy camp in, of all places, the Wall St. Journal. Featuring 71-old retired autoworker Bill "Pappy" Holcomb, attending his 22nd and final fantasy camp. 13 pics.

Aging Out of a Fantasy - WSJ.com

Mr. Holcomb was applauded at his introduction last Saturday. The clubhouse pictures were taken in the Tiger's MLB clubhouse and the on field pictures were taken at the Tiger's original surface, Henly Field which is a few blocks from Tigertown. There were many returning campers and the camp drew at least 5 Australians.
