Is there anything that can be done about dem bums outside of copa!?

Recommended Posts

Well, then I guess those poor, scared little girls will just have to stay home, won't they?

I've been to dozens upon dozens of games through the years, and very few of these "creeps" are over the top when asking for handouts. Most of them just stand there holding a cup. A few are more aggressive, and will ask "help out the homeless?" or something like that. Some try to pass out little flags; others attempt to make jokes, as in the "Eat 'em up Tigers" guy.

But in my experience, it's rare for a homeless person to really be annoying. Mostly, the more aggressive guys will simply ask for a donation. If you politely tell them no and keep walking, they usually won't bother you any more.

As far as the "murder capital of the country" part goes, you're right. Detroit does hav a high murder rate, although 99 percent of the homicides take place in the neighborhoods, with people who know each other, mostly dope-related. As it pertains to this discussion, the more operative thing to ask is, what's the murder rate in downtown Detroit during sporting events? There are literally cops on every corner, and people everywhere.

It sounds to me like you don't want your young relatives to be exposed to those unsightly "creeps." It's also clear you hold Detroit in disdain, choosing to ignore reality (cops everywhere downtown before and after games) and focus on the negative.

So as a person who lives in Detroit, let me be the first to tell you: If you don't like it here, don't come. If walking the streets of the murder capital of the nation is going to get the bottoms of your shoes dirty, or defile your innocent young relatives' delicate female eyes, then go to Metro Beach and do the breast stroke in a swamp of e-coli.

Make no mistake: I'm no Detroit booster. The city's elected officials are a complete joke. Most neighborhoods are shitholes. But when it comes to downtown during events which draw suburbanites, every effort is made to ensure visitors have a safe experience. And for the vast majority, that's exactly what happens. This heightened security downtown is maintained at the expense of the neighborhoods. A cop outside Comerica making sure your *** is able to cross the street without getting mugged is a cop who isn't patrolling my block. That's my tax dollars going to protect the likes of you.

But that's ok. I fully understand the need to try to draw visitors to our city, and, as I said, every effort has been made to do so. I fully welcome those who want to be here, thank them for their patronage, and hope they enjoy themselves.

But if you feel like you're above coming to Detroit, then stay the **** out, whydontcha? We don't want you here.

#1) bums don't bother me personally, they actually bother me less than your common frat boys/loud-mouth morons inside the park.

#2) bums bother my little sisters, my girlfriend, and eventually, will bother my wife and children. you're all saying, if it bothers them so much, then don't bring them. well, 1, it's not their fault they're scared. it's a city where a lot of people are murdered, raped, robbed, beat up, etc. it's dark. there are corners you can't see around. of course they're going to be scared. only the toughest women raised outside of the city won't be. all i'm saying is that it's sad. sad that i'll probably not be able to enjoy a ball game with the women and children in my life bc the atmosphere is so damn scary to them.

#3) is it completely unreasonable to think that the police should have the right to escort beggars away from tourist areas? - stadiums, casinos, theatres, museums, restaurants, etc. - and back into the areas where they're not so out of place?? i'm guessing that repeat tourism business in your beloved city would be much, much greater.

I don't know what to tell you, blue. If the women in your life don't like city life -- which comes with panhandlers, no matter which big city you're talking about -- then why force them to come? My wife doesn't like roller coasters and other rides, so I don't invite her to Cedar Pointe. My son and I just go, and she enjoys a quiet day at home alone, doing her scrapbooking or whatever.

Or else be chivalrous and drop your ladies off right at the gate with your car; then, after the games, walk to the parking lot alone, get your car, and pick them up right outside the park. That way they won't have to weave their way through the ugly streets and the "creeps" who upset them so.

ps: If the ladies in your life don't like sand, I suggest you refrain from taking them to the beach.

i mean, really, whether you want to face it or not...all you detroit city lovers...the question is eventually going to be:

why in the he!! should we build a stadium in that sess pool? its not a family atmosphere. its disgusting. attendance will be higher if we build in...idk...auburn hills...royal oak...etc.

i'm not really a huge huge basketball fan, but it sure is a lot nicer going to games in auburn hills than it is in detroit. and it used to be great going to games in pontiac.

sess pool?

I personally would hate to see the Wings and/or Tigers leave Detroit but maybe that's just me. I like driving from the safe, gated, pristine suburbs to downtown Detroit, which I wouldn't do otherwise, to take in Tigers and Wings games.

no, they're not.

and i for one am really hoping that illitch relocates the red wings to the suburbs once he purchases the pistons.

why the he!! should they stay in detroit?

the city is absolutely disgusting.

Why shouldn't they stay in Detroit? Good grief, yeah lets make Sterling Heights the home of the Red Wings....Lord knows some morons would want that :cheeky:

Get the pacifier out of your mouth bud. I mean you really think thats the bad part of Detroit?? I'll drop you off at Grand River n Outer Drive or Dexter and the Blvd. Those are areas where I would say ok the man has a point. But we're talking about downtown....man you kids in the burbs are way too sheltered. If you fear your life walking a block or two after a Tigers game maybe you shouldn't leave you house period.....

Things happen to people who are this paranoid I've noticed more often than not. They prey on your type. Gotta be smart wherever you go. Carry protection if you feel that threatened by a bum, otherwise I'm not sure what to tell you. Maybe educate your siblings on the history of Detroit and the region...idk.

We know the city is not in great shape, but lets not get all crazy here. It's real life out there you have to think smart wherever.

Haha, good point Bondo. Comerica Park after a night game is nothing.

i'm making some really simple points here...and no one seems to be getting it...

#1) the bums don't bother me personally, i'm talking about the females in my life, so let's skip out the 'questioning of MY manhood jokes.

#2) my little sisters love watching baseball. but they hate going to games, especially night games, because the atmosphere around the outskirts of the park is so frightening to them (ages 8 and 10). the cedar point comparision was retarded. they love 'roller coasters.' there are just scary bums hanging out around all the rides so they don't want to go.

#3) i dont care about how much you love the city, the simple fact is...its not a family atmosphere. the bums surrounding the stadium are bad for business. the stadium even being in that horrid city is bad for business. palace of auburn hills, pontiac silverdome, etc. - family atmospheres. tiger stadium, ford field - not family atmospheres.

#4) if the driving distance was the same, why in the he!! would you rather go to downtown shitroit for a sporting event as opposed to a nice suburb like royal oak?? a place where you can take your entire family...as opposed to only the older males. what is there to do that's so great before/after a ball game in detroit that there isn't to do in a place like royal oak? its not like the bars or restauraunts there are better than the ones in the suburbs these days. i mean...i guess you could...go to the crappy art museum, or some gang-filled night club in detroit and not royal oak?

maybe you guys just don't like spending time with women so its not that big of a deal?? idk. no one seems to be getting what i'm saying here.

What about a lineup for the bums? As soon as Mo gets out of prison we can have:

Chiniqua CF

Moe 2B

Leroy RF

Harry 1B

Rolanda DH

Cecil LF

T-Bone 3B

Peanut C

Leroy SS

Actually there is s good reason to keep it in Detroit. Several major freeways meet near there. That allows 15,000 cars to leave in a somewhat reasonable time frame.

Sadly, you get used to vagrancy after time. When I lived in Berkeley, CA the pleasant weather and social services attracted a lot of homeless. The regulars by Comerica aren't too aggressive to me, but I've read of others, Oblong?, who have had people follow them for a while.

wow. Two things here, blue:

1. Panhandling is, in its barest form, an occupation. Sure it's not a job in the traditional sense of the word, but these "bums" as you call them (I like to refer to them as "HOMELESS PEOPLE" to drive the point home that these men and women don't have a roof over their heads) rely on spare change from others to supplement whatever (if any) income they get from being on the dole or through the VA (that's right - a lot of these guys are veterans, so HEY BUDDY YOU ARE ALREADY INDEBTED TO THEM!) These people pick spots outside large venues because it increases the amount of money they can make by panhandling. And no, it's not all to buy drugs and booze either. What if every time you tried to pick up your paycheck at your job, your boss didn't give it to you because he said you'd just spend it on Internet access to make more banal lineup threads? I'm sure you'd feel pretty bad about that.

2. These people are HUMAN BEINGS. They are fathers, mothers, sons, brothers and sisters. Most people don't end up homeless by choice, and just because you have been FORTUNATE ENOUGH in your life not to have had to live in those circumstances, it's a pretty big leap of logic to assume they're all bloodthirsty killers. They're not - they just work the downtown area because they're trying to maximize the amount of money they make vs. the amount of time they spend asking for change. Even if someone down there was panhandling and had the makings of a violent perp, the chances are almost nil he or she would act on it due to the fact that it could lead to incarceration and banishment from the best hope of securing basic necessities or a decent meal.

Not to mention, these are some of the most friendly, interesting people you'd ever meet if you took a minute to talk with them. Like I said, these people have been through wars -- both literal and figurative ones -- and every single one of them has a valuable story worth telling.

Detroit is hurting very much right now. Michigan's unemployment rate right now is second highest in the entire country (as of July per the USBLS) at over 13%. That means one in every 7.6 people in the whole state are without work. The more we show love to Detroit by going to events there, the more jobs that will create citywide and the more opportunities for those homeless people to have a chance to get back on their feet again.

In short, stop whining about this, it makes you come off as a stuffed shirt suburbanite. Your sisters/girlfriend/grandmother/whatever will be fine walking through the MEAN STREETS of downtown before and after a Tiger game. If the fact that you see a cop on every corner during events like ballgames and that no one has ever died from a violent attack by a homeless person outside a Tiger game leads me to believe that you guys will be pretty safe. Gimme a break, man.

Hand out some copies of your projected lineups. After a few encounters they should learn to avoid them like the rest of us.

Blue,

I think we all get that it is your sisters, gf, etc.'s safety that is your primary concern.

But as has been stated here, especially if you are parking in the Fox or like $20 lot, you are quite close to the venue - well lit, well patrolled. The cops there are aware that the "bums" are there. As long as they are not causing any commotion, they leave them to ply their trade. I took my daughter a couple a weeks ago to a game and we walked past these same folks and they did make her a little uncomfortable at first, but we walked together and talked about what to do as we approached them (avoid eye contact, say no thank you if directly asked, keep walking). Again, if your sisters, gf are uncomfortable, that is their "prerogative", so to say. But it is your job, since you are not uncomfortable, to advise and "protect" them so that it is less an issue to them. Hiding these "undesirables" or moving them to where "they should be" - what does that mean??? - Where do you advise that they go?

Maybe women need to feel safer with you. I see plenty of homeless people with my wife virtually everyday and it makes her sad, not scared.

I go to 30 games a year and encounter the same "bums" all the time. One guy been's using the same schtick for years. When walking along bagley towards the roundabout near Grand Circus Park he'll come up and ask "What's the greatest nation on earth". When you try to answer he'll say "Do-nation". I shared that story before and someone suggested I say "Uri-nation, now piss off!"

We see a guy on Rosa Parks near the 75 interchange before the game and after the game he's on the other side.

The only time they bother me is when they keep after you when you say no. That's when I feel threatened.

The guy that plays the guitar by the church? He's a retired Chrysler factory worker. He's not a bum. Just a guy having fun.

My friend Chuck that I go to games with gets very annoyed going into the games, to the point where we'll walk around the block to avoid them. After the game, when he's had 5 beers and is the friendly drunk, he gives them $5 and feels genuinely sorry for them. "I have more money than I need, these guys have nothing, they get ignored all day. I don't care if they use it for drugs, I'm trying to help them.". It's very sweet.
